Reconnect to the internet, return to the stopped YouTube video or YouTube Music station, and tap or select Retry or Play. If it still will not play, test another network, reopen YouTube, then restart the device. The exact steps depend on whether you are listening on a phone, computer, TV, or cast setup.
First, identify what stopped
“YouTube radio” can mean a station in YouTube Music or a YouTube video or playlist left playing continuously. The recovery steps below apply to both, but a station or queue may need to be started again if retry does not restore playback.
If YouTube shows “Connection to server lost” or “Playback error. Tap to retry,” start with the connection. The official YouTube guidance reviewed does not promise that a stream or radio queue will automatically resume after an internet outage. Autoplay is for starting a related video after the current one ends; it is not a network reconnection feature.
Reconnect playback in this order
- Restore internet access. Check whether other apps or websites work on the same device. If they do not, reconnect Wi-Fi or mobile data and troubleshoot the connection before changing YouTube settings. Restarting the connection and checking its speed can help; other people or devices using the network may reduce the bandwidth available to playback.
- Retry the stopped item. Return to the video or station and tap or select Retry or Play. If it remains stuck, switch networks—for example, from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around. Mobile data charges may apply.
- Reload YouTube. Close and reopen the app. On a computer, reload YouTube or close and reopen the browser. If the browser is out of date, update it.
- Restart the device if needed. A restart is a next step when restoring the connection and reopening YouTube have not fixed playback.
Use the steps for your device
Phone or tablet
- Confirm the phone has internet access by loading another app or website.
- Return to YouTube or YouTube Music and retry the stopped video or station.
- If it fails again, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then retry. Mobile data rates may apply.
- Close and reopen the app. If playback is still stuck, restart the phone or tablet.
Computer
- Check that other websites load. If not, restore the computer’s network connection first.
- Reload the YouTube page and retry playback.
- If the player remains stuck, close and reopen the browser, update it if an update is available, and restart the computer if necessary.
TV or streaming device
- Reopen the YouTube app on the TV and retry the video or station.
- If that fails, restart the TV or streaming device. YouTube’s guidance is to disconnect its power briefly, then reconnect it.
- Check for system software updates on the TV or streaming device.
- If playback still fails, try YouTube on another supported device to help determine whether the problem is specific to the TV setup.
Phone controlling a TV
If the TV plays YouTube but the phone no longer controls it, relink the devices using a TV code:

- Start YouTube on the TV.
- On the phone, open YouTube settings.
- Select General, then Watch on TV.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to link the listed TV again.
This restores the phone-to-TV link; it does not repair an internet connection that is still down.
If a YouTube Music station does not return
YouTube Music describes radio as continuous stations based on favorite songs, albums, and artists. If retry does not resume your station, start it again from the song, artist, album, or radio entry point available in your current app version. Do not assume that the exact previous queue will be restored after an outage.

YouTube Music Premium supports downloads and offline listening. A song or playlist downloaded in advance may be available without an internet connection, but that does not establish that a live or newly generated radio station will keep streaming offline.
Check signal and network conditions if interruptions continue
- For TV playback, YouTube recommends at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming. This is a recommendation for that context, not a guarantee against interruptions.
- Test the TV or streaming device near the router. If the connection improves, keep it within router range and reduce obstructions or interference.
- Reduce other devices’ use of the connection while listening, especially when the network is congested.
- Try another network or another supported playback device to narrow down whether the issue follows the connection or the device.
Fallback if the TV app is the problem
If another device can play YouTube, you can connect a laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable and play from the laptop. This is an alternate way to display playback; it does not restore internet access or reconnect the original TV stream. YouTube also lists Chromecast as an alternate way to play on a TV.
