After swimming in water that may be unsafe, watch for diarrhea or other stomach symptoms, a rash or an infected open wound, ear pain, red or itchy eyes, coughing, or wheezing. Harmful algal blooms can also cause a wider range of symptoms, including possible neurologic effects. These signs do not prove the water caused an illness; CDC advises contacting a healthcare provider if you get sick after swimming or going in water.
Can swimming in dirty water make you sick?
Yes. Illness can follow swallowing contaminated water, getting it on your skin or in an open wound, breathing mist, or exposure to chemicals in the water or air around it. Diarrhea is the most common illness linked to recreational water, and swallowing even a small amount of water containing germs can make someone sick. CDC explains how swimming-related illnesses and injuries occur.
Different exposures can affect different parts of the body. A symptom that starts after a swim may also have another cause, so symptoms alone cannot identify a germ, chemical, or toxin.

Diarrhea and other stomach symptoms
Diarrhea is the most common illness linked to recreational water. CDC names Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Shigella, norovirus, and E. coli O157 among germs that can cause diarrhea after contaminated water is swallowed. Nausea and vomiting can also occur with some harmful algal bloom toxin exposures.

Rashes, skin irritation, and wound infections
A rash or skin irritation can follow swimming, but it does not point to one cause. In natural water, contaminated water can infect an open cut or wound. Pool chemicals may also irritate skin: chloramines are associated with skin irritation and rashes. CDC lists common swimming-related illnesses, and its chloramine guidance describes irritation related to pool chemicals.
Ear pain
Swimmer’s ear is among the common illness groups associated with swimming. Ear pain after swimming is worth mentioning to a healthcare provider, but it does not establish that the water caused it.

Red or itchy eyes, coughing, and wheezing
Eye or lung irritation can occur after swimming. In pools, chloramines may cause red or itchy eyes, nasal irritation, coughing, or wheezing; people with asthma may experience asthma attacks. If swimmers or others nearby develop eye, skin, or breathing irritation that may be connected to the pool or surrounding air, CDC recommends telling a lifeguard or pool operator.

Freshwater cyanobacteria or their toxins can affect people through skin or eye contact, inhalation, or ingestion. Depending on the toxin and exposure route, possible effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, itching, blisters, conjunctivitis, respiratory irritation, or neurologic symptoms such as tingling, numbness, burning sensations, drowsiness, salivation, or speech disturbance. This range is not a way to diagnose a bloom exposure; the water conditions and how contact occurred matter. See CDC’s information on harmful algal blooms.

How soon after swimming in contaminated water do symptoms start?
There is no single onset interval that applies to every possible cause. Germs, chemicals, and algal toxins differ, and the sources cited here do not establish one general timeline. Do not use the time between swimming and symptoms to rule an exposure in or out.
What exposure details should you share?
When speaking with a healthcare provider, describe when and where the swim happened, what symptoms developed, and whether you know of a water warning. Useful context includes:

- Whether it was a pool, hot tub, lake, river, ocean, or another recreational-water setting.
- Whether water may have been swallowed or contacted an open cut or wound.
- Whether there was an advisory or closure, unusual cloudiness or discoloration, a bad odor, or drainage pipes entering or near the water.
These details can help a clinician assess possible exposure, but they cannot identify a pathogen or toxin by themselves. For natural water, check local monitoring, advisories, and closures, particularly after heavy rain. CDC advises staying out of water that is unusually cloudy, discolored, or bad-smelling, or where pipes drain into or around it. CDC’s healthy-swimming guidance covers these precautions.

If pool-air or chemical irritation is possible, tell the lifeguard or pool operator, especially if several people are affected or there is a strong chemical odor. If a natural-water hazard is suspected, avoid further exposure and check local advisories.
Quick Recap
How to reduce exposure on future swims
- Do not swallow recreational water, and stay out of pools or other recreational water when sick with diarrhea.
- For natural water, check local advisories and closures, and avoid water that is unusually cloudy, discolored, or bad-smelling, as well as areas with drainage pipes entering or near the water.
