%DEFLOGDIR% is a Windows environment variable commonly used in legacy McAfee antivirus installations to build log-file paths. To redirect components that honor it, create the destination folder, change DEFLOGDIR under System Properties → Advanced → Environment Variables (usually in System variables), restart the affected service or application, and verify where new logs appear. This is an operating-system change, not a guaranteed supported setting for every McAfee release.

What %DEFLOGDIR% means

The variable name is DEFLOGDIR; the percent signs are Windows cmd.exe syntax for expanding an environment variable. It is not a built-in Windows directory and is not a file. McAfee-related policies and legacy VirusScan Enterprise installations have used it as the parent directory for log files such as update, scan, and access-protection logs.

One documented legacy value is C:ProgramDataMcAfeeDesktopProtection. Older Windows installations may instead resolve it to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMcAfeeDesktopProtection. The actual value depends on the product, version, installation, and policy. See the examples in the Broadcom Knowledge Base and the University of Cambridge managed-antivirus policy.

Check the value currently in use

Command Prompt

echo %DEFLOGDIR%
set DEFLOGDIR

echo shows the value inherited by that Command Prompt. If it prints %DEFLOGDIR% unchanged, the variable is not defined in that process.

PowerShell

$Env:DEFLOGDIR
[Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable('DEFLOGDIR', 'User')
[Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable('DEFLOGDIR', 'Machine')

The first command reports the current PowerShell process value. The other two inspect persistent User and Machine values, which can differ. Windows gives each process a copy of its parent environment block, so an already-running service may retain an older value. See Microsoft’s documentation on User Environment Variables.

Reassign it permanently with the Windows interface

  1. Create the destination folder, for example C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs. Ensure the account used by the antivirus service can write to it.
  2. Press Win + R, enter sysdm.cpl, and press Enter.
  3. Open Advanced → Environment Variables.
  4. Under System variables, select DEFLOGDIR and choose Edit. For a service or all-user installation, Machine/System scope is normally the appropriate choice.
  5. Enter the folder path, without a trailing log filename, then confirm every dialog.
  6. Restart the relevant McAfee service or application. Reboot Windows if you cannot identify every affected process.
  7. Open a new Command Prompt and run echo %DEFLOGDIR%. Then generate or wait for a log entry and confirm that the destination receives it.

Use User variables only when the software runs in that user’s logon session, when you lack elevation, or when the existing variable is explicitly user-scoped. A User value edited for one account does not generally control a Windows service running as Local System or another service identity. Microsoft documents the interface and scope behavior in PowerShell environment variables.

Command-line alternatives

Temporary test in Command Prompt

set DEFLOGDIR=C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs
echo %DEFLOGDIR%

set changes only the current Command Prompt and programs launched from it; it does not change persistent User or Machine settings. A service launched independently will not inherit this test value. Microsoft describes this behavior in the set command reference.

Persistent value with setx

setx DEFLOGDIR "C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs"
setx DEFLOGDIR "C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs" /M

The first command writes the current user’s value. The second writes the Machine value and must run in an elevated Command Prompt. Neither updates the existing shell; open a new Command Prompt before checking it. setx is suitable for this short path, but avoid using it casually for long or complex variables: Microsoft documents expansion behavior and a historical 1,024-character assignment limitation. See the current setx documentation and its legacy limitation notes.

Persistent value with PowerShell

[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable('DEFLOGDIR','C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs','User')

For all users and services, run elevated PowerShell and use:

[Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable('DEFLOGDIR','C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs','Machine')

These methods write an explicit scope but still require affected processes to restart. The API is documented at Environment.SetEnvironmentVariable.

Existing logs are not moved automatically

Changing the variable changes where future expansions point; it normally leaves existing files in the old directory. If you need to preserve them, stop or pause the relevant antivirus service first, create the destination, and copy the files:

mkdir "C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs"
robocopy "%DEFLOGDIR%" "C:ProgramDataMcAfeeLogs" /E /COPY:DAT
  • Keep the original directory until new logging has been verified.
  • Preserve appropriate ownership and permissions; the exact files and subdirectories vary by product and version.
  • Do not delete the source while the service may still be writing to it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Permissions and service identity

Your interactive account being able to create a file does not prove that the antivirus service can. Grant the service account the minimum required write or modify permission on the destination. Avoid broad Everyone: Full Control permissions. Also check disk monitoring, backup, SIEM collection, retention, and incident-response procedures before moving security logs.

If McAfee continues using the old directory

First restart the service and verify the value from a newly launched process. If logs still go to the old path, the component may not consume DEFLOGDIR at all. Other possibilities include a product registry or configuration setting, an ePolicy Orchestrator policy, a service wrapper that supplies its own environment, or a repair/upgrade task that restores the original path.

  • Check the product’s own supported logging setting or centrally managed policy.
  • Confirm that the installed component is the legacy McAfee/VirusScan module associated with this variable; modern Endpoint Security modules may use a different logging architecture.
  • Treat repeated reversion as evidence of management policy rather than repeatedly editing Windows.
  • Use the vendor-supported path setting or configure log collection/forwarding elsewhere when available.

The available McAfee-related references demonstrate use of the variable but do not establish a universal, currently supported manual reassignment procedure. Examples include the Broadcom entry and this legacy log-location reference.

Rollback

Record the original value, new value, scope, date, and reason for the change. To roll back, restore the previous DEFLOGDIR value in the same User or Machine scope, restart the affected service, and verify that new entries return to the original location. If the product is centrally managed, remove or change the corresponding policy as well.

Should you use a junction?

A directory junction can redirect an old path when no supported setting works:

mklink /J "C:ProgramDataMcAfeeDesktopProtection" "D:McAfeeLogs"

Use this only as a last-resort compatibility workaround after confirming that the product, security controls, backups, and log collectors tolerate it. It should be treated as unsupported unless the vendor explicitly documents it.
