To read a website in dark mode, first use the site’s own theme switch. If the page stays white, turn on your browser’s dark appearance; for a long article, try a reading view with a dark color theme. If neither changes the page, a dark-mode extension can restyle it, though it may affect page colors or interactive controls. A dark browser toolbar alone does not mean the website itself is dark.
Choose the kind of dark mode you need
There are three different things people mean by “dark mode,” and they do not always change the same part of the screen:
- A dark browser interface changes parts of the browser, such as its toolbar and settings. It may leave the website’s page background white.
- A site’s own dark theme changes the webpage itself when the site offers a theme switch. This is usually the best first choice because it is designed for that site’s content and controls.
- A reading view or forced dark styling changes how the page is presented. A reading view is designed to simplify text; an extension can attempt to recolor a wider range of sites.
Choose based on what you want to read. For an article, a reading view can offer more control over typography as well as color. For a full website that has no dark theme, an extension may reach more pages, but it can also change elements in ways the site did not intend.
Start with the website’s own dark theme
Look on the page for a theme control, often represented by a sun or moon icon or labeled with a theme choice. If the site provides a dark theme, use it before changing browser settings or adding an extension. Its controls and page content are more likely to be designed to work together than a forced color treatment.

If you cannot find a site control, move on to the browser. Keep in mind that the browser’s dark appearance setting is not a command that every third-party site must follow. A site may stay light because it does not respond to the browser or operating system’s color preference.
Turn on dark appearance in Chrome
Darken Chrome’s interface
- Open a New Tab.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark to use a dark Chrome appearance, or choose Device to follow your computer’s theme. Choose Light to return to the light appearance.
This setting darkens Chrome’s homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other Chrome pages; it does not ensure that an unrelated website’s content will change. If the toolbar is dark but the page is still white, look for the site’s own theme, use Reading mode for supported article text, or consider an extension.
Use Chrome Reading mode for an article
For supported pages, Chrome Reading mode opens text in a focused view. Its controls include a color theme and settings for font, font size, line height, letter spacing, link visibility, and image visibility. It can also read text aloud, with playback speed and highlighting controls.
Reading mode is not available on every website. Google notes that it may fail on pages such as image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens. Use it when your goal is to read text rather than operate the whole site. If a page becomes incomplete or a control you need is missing, return to the regular page view.

Turn on dark appearance in Microsoft Edge
Darken Edge’s interface
- Open Settings and more.
- Select Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Under Overall appearance, choose Dark.
This changes Edge’s default bright interface background to a darker color. It can make the browser interface less bright, but it does not guarantee that the website itself will be restyled.
Use Immersive Reader for page text
Microsoft accessibility guidance describes Edge’s Immersive Reader as a way to change a page theme to dark. It is a better fit for reading article text than for using a highly interactive application. If you need a map, form, player, or other interactive element, check whether it remains available in that view; otherwise return to the regular page.
Adjust website appearance in Firefox
Firefox has website appearance and contrast settings that let you influence how sites are displayed. They are useful as preferences or contrast controls, but should not be treated as a guarantee that every website will be fully recolored.
Windows High Contrast and related settings can also affect or override custom website colors. If a site looks different from the theme you chose, check whether a system contrast setting is involved. For a page that ignores your preference, try its own theme control or a reading view or extension instead.

Force dark mode on a website that ignores your preference
A third-party dark-mode extension can attempt to apply dark styling to sites that do not respond to browser or operating-system preferences. Dark Reader is one example: its Chrome Web Store listing describes it as an accessibility extension and reported 7,000,000 users in the 2026 listing. That figure is the listing’s reported user count, not a measure of whether it works well on a particular site.
- Find the extension in your browser’s extension store and review its listing and permissions.
- Install it using the store’s controls, then open the page you want to read.
- Use the extension’s controls to enable or adjust its treatment if needed.
- If the page’s colors or controls become hard to use, turn the extension off for that site or return to the site’s own theme or a reading view.
Extensions can be useful when broad coverage matters more than preserving every original color. They may also alter images, widgets, forms, or login screens. Consider using forced styling on ordinary reading pages, but disable it on a site where its treatment makes a task harder or less reliable.
Pick the right option for reading and accessibility

If you need larger text, spacing adjustments, stronger contrast, or read-aloud, look for the mode that actually provides those controls. Chrome Reading mode exposes several typography options and text-to-speech controls; a dark color switch by itself may not meet those needs. Users who depend on screen-reader navigation should check whether a simplified view preserves the structure and controls they need.
Why a dark browser can leave a white website
Chrome and Edge describe their dark settings as changing browser appearance, not as a guarantee that every third-party page will change. The website can remain bright if it does not provide a dark theme or does not respond to the browser’s appearance preference. A site can also apply its own colors independently.

Check the page rather than judging by the browser frame. If the page is still white, try the site’s theme control. For an article, use a supported reading view. If you need the full page and it still ignores those choices, try a dark-mode extension and watch for visual or functional conflicts.

The browser menus are dark, but the webpage is white
This is expected when a browser setting changes only browser surfaces and the site does not respond to the browser’s color preference. Look for a site-level theme switch; otherwise, use a reading view for supported text or test a dark-mode extension.
Reading mode is unavailable or the page is incomplete
Reading views are not supported on every website and can omit or fail on interactive or specialized content, including galleries, maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens. Return to the original page for those tasks. If the page is mainly text, try another supported article instead of assuming the browser is broken.
Colors, images, or controls look wrong after enabling an extension
Disable the forced extension for that domain, switch back to the website’s theme, or use a reading view. Inspect forms, maps, video players, charts, and payment or login pages particularly carefully: simplified views may exclude content, while forced recoloring can disturb page elements.

Firefox does not show the colors you selected
Check whether Windows High Contrast or a related system setting is changing how website appearance preferences are applied. Firefox’s website appearance and contrast controls influence site display, but they cannot guarantee that every page will use a particular palette.
For developers: preview a site’s dark color preference
If you are building or checking a website, Microsoft Edge DevTools can emulate CSS prefers-color-scheme: dark or prefers-color-scheme: light. This lets you inspect how a page responds without changing the whole computer’s theme. It tests the site’s response to that CSS preference; it does not establish that every visitor’s browser will display every page in the same way.
