1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo compare snacks, check the serving size first, then compare Added Sugars and Dietary Fiber in both grams and % Daily Value (%DV). Total Sugars includes naturally occurring sugars as well as added sugars, so it is not a substitute for the Added Sugars line.
Start with the serving size
Nutrition Facts amounts usually describe one serving, and a package may contain several. The serving size is based on the amount people typically consume; it is not a recommendation for how much to eat. FDA explains this on its serving-size guide.
Check the serving size in grams and servings per package before comparing two snacks. If you eat two servings, double the listed nutrient amounts; if you eat the whole package, use a whole-package column when one is provided. When serving sizes differ, compare similar amounts of each snack rather than assuming one labeled serving is equivalent to another. A kitchen scale can help measure a portion matching the label’s gram amount, but it is optional.
Tell Total Sugars apart from Added Sugars
Total Sugars includes sugar naturally present in foods, such as fruit or milk, plus any sugars added during processing. The line reading “Includes X g Added Sugars” means those added-sugar grams are already counted within Total Sugars; do not add them a second time. FDA’s explanation of the panel is in its Nutrition Facts label guide.

Added sugars are not limited to table sugar. FDA includes sugars added during processing, packaged sweeteners, syrups, honey, and sugars from concentrated fruit or vegetable juices. For pure honey, maple syrup, and similar single-ingredient sugars, a special display rule applies: the label must show Added Sugars %DV, while the grams may appear in a footnote instead of the usual line. An absent gram figure in that format does not mean the product has no added sugars. See the FDA’s added-sugars guidance.
Use %DV to compare sugar and fiber
The %DV shows how much a nutrient in one serving contributes to a total daily diet. FDA’s general guide is that 5% DV or less is low and 20% DV or more is high. Apply that as a quick scale for each nutrient: for this comparison, less Added Sugars %DV and more Dietary Fiber %DV may be preferable. These thresholds describe a nutrient in one serving; they are not an overall rating of whether a snack is healthy or unhealthy.

FDA’s current reference values, accessed in 2026, are 50 g per day for Added Sugars and 28 g per day for Dietary Fiber. These Daily Values are general references based on nutrition advice for a 2,000-calorie diet, not personal targets; individual energy needs may be higher or lower. FDA’s Daily Value reference explains the values and how to interpret them.
Total Sugars has no %DV on the standard Nutrition Facts label because FDA has not established a Daily Reference Value for it. Added Sugars and Dietary Fiber do have amounts and %DV, so use those lines when comparing these nutrients.

A quick snack-label comparison
- Match the basis: note the serving size in grams and servings per package. Adjust the amounts for the portion you actually eat, or use a whole-package column if available.
- Compare Added Sugars: look at both grams and %DV, not Total Sugars alone.
- Compare Dietary Fiber: check its grams and %DV; a higher %DV means that serving contributes more of the Daily Value.
- Use the 5%/20% guide: 5% DV or less is generally low, and 20% DV or more is generally high. Treat this as a per-nutrient comparison, not a complete snack score.
- Check the rest of the label: consider the ingredient list and other Nutrition Facts details relevant to your needs. Front-of-package claims alone do not tell you how the snack compares on added sugars or fiber.
What “too much” added sugar means on the label
FDA says the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends limiting calories from added sugars to less than 10% of total calories per day. For a 2,000-calorie reference diet, FDA describes that as 200 calories, or 50 g. This is a general federal recommendation, not an individualized prescription. A snack’s %DV helps show its contribution, but it does not determine what is appropriate for a particular person or account for the rest of the day’s diet.
