A tackle is a challenge for the ball against an opponent; an interception cuts off a pass. A recovery is a separate provider-defined statistic, so its meaning depends on the data source. To compare players fairly, check the event definitions, minutes played, role and team context, and whether you are looking at a total, rate or ranking.
What a tackle and an interception mean
In association football, the Laws of the Game describe the action, while a statistics provider defines how its data records that action. Those are related but different questions: a legal action can have one ordinary football meaning, while a provider’s event model determines which incidents appear in a player’s stat line.
Tackle
The IFAB glossary defines a tackle as “a challenge for the ball with the foot (on the ground or in the air).” That is a general description, not a universal rule for how every statistics provider counts tackles. IFAB’s Football Terms glossary provides the Laws-level definition.
Providers can use narrower criteria. For example, StatsBomb’s player-stat glossary maps tackles to events with the event name “duel” and type “tackle.” Opta’s surfaced definition requires a legal ground-level challenge in which the player connects with the ball and takes it away from an opponent in controlled possession. These are examples of provider-specific event rules, not interchangeable definitions. See the StatsBomb Stats Portal glossary and Sky Bet’s Opta football statistics definitions.

Interception
IFAB defines “intercept” as preventing a ball from reaching its intended destination. In statistical terms, Opta describes an interception as reading an opponent’s pass and moving into its intended passing line. A player cutting out a pass is therefore different from challenging an opponent who already has the ball; providers that distinguish the events record the first as an interception, not a tackle.
A tackle does not necessarily mean possession was won
Do not read “tackle” as a guarantee that the defending team kept the ball. Under Opta’s definitions, a tackle can be recorded as won or lost depending on which side regains possession after the challenge. The tackle describes the challenge; the outcome describes what happened afterward.

What a recovery count tells you
There is no single provider-neutral recovery definition established here. Do not assume recoveries are simply tackles plus interceptions, or that every provider counts loose-ball regains in the same way. A recovery figure is meaningful only alongside the provider’s own glossary and the competition or stats page that supplies it.
If the source does not explain its recovery rule, treat the number as that source’s label rather than a precisely defined, cross-provider measure. The StatsBomb Stats Portal and FIFA Training Centre’s data-analysis definitions are relevant starting points, but neither should be assumed to establish a universal recovery boundary.

How to compare defensive stats fairly
- Identify the provider and competition. Check the stat page’s source and the competition and time span it covers. Event rules differ, and a glossary for one provider does not define another provider’s data.
- Confirm what the event measures. Look for whether the number represents an attempt, a successful action, a possession regain or a pass cut out. A tackle, its outcome and a later regain are not automatically the same event.
- Check minutes and role. A player who plays more minutes has more time to accumulate events. Position, defensive assignment and team style also affect how often a player gets the opportunity to tackle or intercept.
- Read the display correctly. A total accumulates events; an average (mean) divides a sum by the number of values; a ranking places players or teams relative to one another on a metric. FIFA Training Centre’s data-analysis definitions page, dated 29 July 2024, explains these distinctions.
- Understand the denominator or adjustment. A per-90 figure expresses a count relative to 90 minutes; it is not the same as a raw total. A possession-adjusted stat attempts to account for how much of a match a team spends without the ball, and should not be treated as interchangeable with a per-90 rate. StatsBomb’s 2021 radar explanation gives possession-adjusted tackles and interceptions as one analytical approach, not a universal standard.
For a useful comparison, line up the same provider, competition and time span, then compare players with similar roles and consider minutes and team possession context. If the metric uses a rate or adjustment, check what it controls for before drawing conclusions.

Tackle, interception and recovery counts describe selected recorded events; they do not capture every way a defender prevents danger or contributes to the team’s shape. A high total may reflect more playing time or more opportunities to defend, not necessarily better defending. Likewise, a lower count alone does not establish that a player contributed less.

Use these figures as evidence about particular actions, interpreted under the source’s rules and in context. They are not, on their own, a complete measure of defensive quality.
