It does not measure software-development ability in general. To judge a claim, check the tasks, tests, agent setup, score components and uncertainty—and whether the benchmark resembles the work you care about.
What does a coding benchmark score actually mean?
Take SWE-bench as an example: an agent receives a GitHub issue and its repository, proposes a patch, and is evaluated using repository tests. A score therefore describes success under that issue set and test protocol—not the full range of professional development, such as long-term maintenance, product judgment, teamwork or production operations. OpenAI’s 2024 introduction to SWE-bench Verified describes the benchmark and its task format.
The result belongs to the whole tested setup, not necessarily the model alone. The agent scaffold, tools, prompts, execution environment, time or compute budget and run configuration can all affect performance. If a report does not disclose enough of these details, treat comparisons with other results as difficult to interpret.
Can I trust SWE-bench scores?
Use them as evidence about performance on the stated benchmark, but examine task and test quality before treating a score as a reliable measure of capability. A test can fail to cover the requested behavior, reject a valid solution, or depend on an unclear issue description.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OpenAI reported in February 2026 that 59.4% of the audited subset of SWE-bench Verified problems had flawed tests that rejected functionally correct submissions. The audit covered 27.6% of the dataset, so 59.4% is not a measured rate for every Verified task. OpenAI also said frontier models it tested could reproduce gold patches or verbatim task details for some Verified examples, and argued that results increasingly reflected exposure as well as ability. Those findings are OpenAI’s analysis of this benchmark and the models it tested; they do not establish that every benchmark or every model is affected in the same way. See OpenAI’s February 2026 account.
A successor benchmark also needs scrutiny. In July 2026, OpenAI estimated that roughly 30% of SWE-bench Pro tasks were broken. Its audit described misleading or underspecified prompts and overly strict or low-coverage tests. Human reviewers labeled 9.4% of tasks as having low-coverage tests, compared with 4.1% identified by the agent pipeline. These are OpenAI’s estimates and audit findings, not a universal assessment of all Pro tasks; details appear in its July 2026 report.

How to assess a benchmark claim
- Identify the exact task set and version. Find the benchmark name, dataset split and date. A frozen split can support comparisons on the same tasks; an actively refreshed set may better reflect newer work but make results from different dates less directly comparable. SWE-bench-Live says its Lite and Verified splits remain frozen while its test split receives newer issues. Its project and leaderboard page also describes its broader dataset approach.
- Ask what counts as a solve. Check whether success means passing tests, another form of grading, or a particular combination—and whether the result is from one attempt or repeated attempts. A pass rate is meaningful only in the context of that rule.
- Inspect task and test validity. Look for evidence about prompt clarity, test coverage, whether valid alternative solutions can pass, and whether the agent can access information that reveals expected answers. An audit estimate should be attributed to its publisher and scope, rather than presented as a settled rate for an entire benchmark.
- Check the tested system. Compare the model, agent scaffold, tools, prompts, environment and resource limits. A model-only interpretation is not justified if the result actually comes from a configured agent system.
- Read the component scores and weights. For a composite, determine which evaluations contribute and how they are combined. One aggregate can hide uneven results across task types.
- Look for uncertainty and per-task results. A small gap in aggregate percentages may not reliably distinguish systems. Prefer reports that give per-instance outcomes, attempt counts and a statistical analysis where relevant.
- Match the benchmark to your decision. Consider whether its repositories, languages, task types, security constraints and operating budgets resemble your situation. For a deployment choice, a small internal evaluation using representative tasks and your actual agent setup can be more relevant than importing an external rank.
What is SWE-bench Verified—and what can its score tell you?
SWE-bench Verified is a vetted subset associated with SWE-bench; it is still an evaluation of issue-resolution tasks rather than a general certification of coding ability. The word “Verified” should not be read as a guarantee that every task or test is flawless. OpenAI’s 2026 audit findings concern an audited subset and raise specific concerns about flawed tests and training exposure; they do not erase the benchmark’s value as a record of results under its stated protocol.
Benchmarks differ in what they ask agents to do. The SWE-bench project’s releases and project listings include related evaluations, while SWE-bench-Live describes multilingual and multi-operating-system work; its Lite, Full and Verified splits are Python-only. Check the exact release and split rather than assuming a benchmark family covers every language or workflow.

Why close leaderboard scores may not establish a winner
A leaderboard ranks reported results, but adjacent entries may not be statistically distinguishable. A September 2026 preprint by Liu and colleagues found no significant difference for 29 adjacent pairs among the top Verified submissions under its specified exact paired test at a 0.05 threshold. The authors explicitly caution that failing to reject a difference does not prove the systems are equivalent. Treat the finding as a reason to be cautious about fine-grained ordering, not as proof that leaderboards are useless. See the preprint.
For any close comparison, ask whether the same tasks were used, how many outcomes were observed, and whether the report provides a suitable uncertainty analysis. A headline ranking without those details may suggest a precision the evidence does not support.

How to compare coding-agent benchmarks
Use the benchmark’s task mix and reporting method to decide whether it answers your question. Artificial Analysis’s Coding Agent Index v1.5, identified as the September 2026 version, equally weights DeepSWE v1.1, Terminal-Bench 4.0 and SWE-Atlas-QnA. It reports evaluation-level scores alongside reliability, token usage, cost and execution time. Those components cover different kinds of work, so the equal-weight aggregate may conceal a system’s strengths or weaknesses on the task type that matters to you. The index methodology explains its construction.

| Comparison axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Task fit | Issue repair, terminal operation, repository question-answering or creating software artifacts | Success in one task type does not establish success in another. |
| Dataset scope | Languages, operating systems, repositories and task count | A benchmark may not represent your codebase or platform. |
| Freshness and stability | Frozen split or updated task set, and the date of the run | Freshness can improve relevance; a changing set complicates direct comparisons over time. |
| Task and test quality | Prompt clarity, test coverage, outcome validity and audit method | Flawed tasks or tests can distort pass rates. |
| System definition | Model, scaffold, tools, environment and resource budget | The score may reflect the complete configured system. |
| Scoring and uncertainty | Pass definition, attempt count, per-task outcomes, composite weights and statistical analysis | These determine what the headline number summarizes and how confidently it can be compared. |
| Operational cost | Reliability, token use, cost and execution time, if reported | A high score may not fit a real deployment’s operating constraints. |
