In Java Edition, hold Shift and left-click an item stack to quickly move it between your inventory and an open chest or other container. With no container open, the same shortcut moves a stack between your main inventory and hotbar. Other shortcuts handle single items, partial stacks, and scattered matching items.
Quick-move a stack between your inventory and a chest

Open your personal inventory with E, or right-click a chest or other container to open its screen. Minecraft’s Controls guide confirms that E opens the inventory and describes the basic mouse controls.

In the container screen, hold Shift and left-click the stack you want to move. It transfers to the other inventory—the container or your player inventory—where an eligible slot has room. This quick-move behavior is documented for Java Edition in the Minecraft Wiki’s inventory reference.

If you are not looking at a container, Shift-click moves a stack between the main inventory and hotbar. The destination depends on the screen and available space.

Choose a shortcut for the amount you want to move

| Place or swap one item with a hotbar slot | Hover over the item and press 1–9 for the desired slot | Moves the item to an empty matching slot, or swaps it with the occupied slot. |
| Swap an item with the off-hand | Hover over the item and press F | Performs the analogous swap with the off-hand slot. |
| Pick up half a stack | Right-click the stack | Picks up half; for an odd-sized stack, the smaller half remains in the original slot. |

These inventory actions and their outcomes are described in the inventory reference. The official Minecraft controls page also documents E for opening inventory and number keys for hotbar selection.
Spread items across several slots
Dragging lets you distribute a held stack rather than moving it all to one slot:

- Left-button drag: Pick up the stack, then drag across eligible slots to divide the items as evenly as possible.
- Right-button drag: Drag across eligible slots to place one item in each.
- Slot limits: Dragging works on empty slots or slots holding the same item. If the selected slots cannot hold the full amount, the remainder stays on the cursor.

To gather matching items from across an open inventory, double-click one of the stacks. To bulk-transfer matching items from a container to your player inventory, first hold an item on the cursor, then hold Shift and double-click a matching stack. That cursor-item precondition matters: Shift-double-click is not simply a general command to combine everything in a chest. The inventory reference documents both actions.

Java and Bedrock controls are not interchangeable by assumption
The quick-move details above are Java Edition guidance. “PC” can refer to Java or Bedrock, and the official controls page covers basic mouse-and-keyboard controls rather than establishing that every inventory shortcut behaves identically in both editions. If you play Bedrock, check the controls shown for your edition or test the action in a safe inventory screen before relying on it. Custom controls or unusual setups may also affect what works.
The inventory reference says these mouse-button and Shift inventory actions are independent of the keybinds menu. A Mojang bug-tracker report records historical issues involving remapped controls and inventory actions; it does not establish the current behavior for every game version.
