The quickest way to open OneDrive settings depends on which OneDrive app you use. In the desktop sync app, select the cloud icon and open its settings; on the website and mobile apps, use their account or settings controls. The Microsoft Store OneDrive app is a viewer and does not back up or sync files.
Open OneDrive settings on Windows
For the desktop app named Microsoft OneDrive:
- Look in the Windows notification area at the right side of the taskbar for the blue or white OneDrive cloud icon.
- If it is not visible, select Show hidden icons (the up-arrow).
- Select the cloud icon, then select OneDrive Help and Settings.
- Select Settings.
If OneDrive is not running, select Start, type OneDrive, and select it from the search results. Wait for the cloud icon to appear, then repeat the steps above.
What you can change in Windows settings
The documented desktop settings tabs include:

- Add another account: Account → Add an account
- Select which folders are stored locally: Account → Choose folders
- Back up Desktop, Documents, or Pictures: Sync and backup → Manage back up
- Disconnect this computer: Account → Unlink this PC → Unlink account
- Check the app build: About
Choosing fewer folders removes excluded folders from the local OneDrive folder on that computer. The folders remain visible through OneDrive in a web browser or mobile app.

Pause or close OneDrive on Windows
To temporarily stop file transfers, select the cloud icon → OneDrive Help and Settings → Pause syncing, then choose a duration. To start syncing again, open the same menu and select Resume syncing.
To stop the desktop app, select the cloud icon → OneDrive Help and Settings → Close OneDrive. Start it again from the Windows Start menu when needed.
Open OneDrive settings on a Mac
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the macOS menu bar.
- Select the three dots (More).
- Select Preferences.
The documented macOS settings areas are Preferences, Account, and About.
- Preferences: notification and startup behavior, plus Files On-Demand settings
- Account: storage usage, Manage your Cloud storage, and Unlink this Mac
- About: version and build information
Microsoft documents Files On-Demand for macOS 10.14 and newer. The About section can identify the build as Standalone, Apple silicon, or Preview.

If the OneDrive icon is missing on macOS
Open OneDrive in Applications. If the app is not behaving normally, Microsoft provides a reset procedure:
- Open Applications.
- Right-click OneDrive and select Show Package Contents.
- Open Contents → Resources.
- Double-click ResetOneDriveApp.command for the regular app or ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command for the standalone app.
- Start OneDrive and complete setup again.
Open OneDrive settings on the website
The OneDrive website does not use the desktop cloud-icon menu. Sign in to OneDrive in a current browser, then use the account or settings controls on the site.
Web settings can include:
- Manage storage
- Plans and upgrades
- Office File formats
- Personal Vault
- Photos and Tagging
- Notifications
- Device backups
- Restore your OneDrive
- Search
Restore your OneDrive lets you return OneDrive to an earlier point using a preset date or a slider to identify unusual activity, then selecting changes to undo. Review the proposed changes before confirming.
Open OneDrive settings on Android or iPhone
The mobile path is similar on both platforms:
- Open the OneDrive app.
- Tap your profile picture or the Person icon.
- Tap Settings.

Open settings in the Microsoft Store OneDrive app
In OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation from the Microsoft Store, open the app and select More … → Settings. Options include Reset app, Dark mode, and Get more storage.
This Store app lets you view files; it does not back up or sync them. The desktop sync app is named Microsoft OneDrive. Both apps can be installed on the same computer, which can cause confusion when looking for sync controls.
Which account do the settings apply to?
Settings apply to the selected account. Only one personal OneDrive account can be active on a computer, while multiple work or school accounts are supported.

Some settings may be unavailable for a work or school account because an organization’s administrator controls them. Missing controls do not necessarily indicate a damaged installation.

Microsoft’s support page lists desktop version 26.012.0119.0002, dated February 6, 2026, for Windows and macOS. Your installed build may differ if the app has not updated, your organization manages updates, or you use a preview release.

When the usual settings path does not work

| You are worried about unlinking | Unlinking disconnects the computer from the account; it is not the same as deleting online files. Confirm important files are synced before changing account configuration. |
Internet Explorer is no longer supported for OneDrive. Use a current browser such as Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari for web settings.
FAQ
Why can’t I see the OneDrive cloud icon in Windows?
The icon may be hidden under the taskbar’s up-arrow, or OneDrive may not be running. Select Start, search for OneDrive, and launch it. Then check the notification area again.
Does choosing folders delete them from OneDrive?
No. Account → Choose folders stops selected folders from being stored in that computer’s local OneDrive folder. The folders remain available online and in the mobile app.
Will unlinking OneDrive delete my files?
Unlinking the PC or Mac disconnects that device from the account. It is not an instruction to delete files stored online. Check that pending changes have finished syncing before unlinking.
What is the difference between the OneDrive desktop app and the Store app?
The desktop app, named Microsoft OneDrive, backs up and syncs files. The OneDrive by Microsoft Corporation Store app lets you view files and does not provide desktop backup or file synchronization.
Can I use more than one OneDrive account?
You can use one personal OneDrive account on a computer and multiple work or school accounts. Settings apply to the account selected.
