For most phones without a built-in lanyard hole, use a tether tab made for phone cases: place it inside a compatible case, route its loop through the charging-port opening, seat the phone in the case, then clip on the strap. If your phone or case has a dedicated lanyard hole, attach the strap there instead and follow its instructions.
Choose an attachment method

Install a tether tab inside a case
- Remove the phone from its case.
- Place the tether tab inside the case, with its small loop routed through the charging-port opening.
- Lay the tab flat, then put the phone back into the case. Check that the case closes fully and the tab does not bunch up.
- Clip the wrist strap or lanyard onto the exposed loop and make sure the clip is closed.
Satechi and The Orbit Brand publish versions of this setup in their product instructions: Satechi’s USB-C cable lanyard instructions and The Orbit Brand’s phone-lanyard instructions. Use the directions supplied with your specific tab; products may differ.
Attach the strap to a built-in hole
If the phone or case has a purpose-made lanyard hole, thread the small loop through it and pass the strap through that loop, following the device or case guide. SmallRig describes attaching its strap directly to a case lanyard hole when one is present: SmallRig phone wrist strap.
Hole size can be model-specific. For example, HTC’s instructions for the Desire 530 specify a lanyard loop no thicker than 1 mm. That measurement applies to that model, not to phones generally: HTC Desire 530 instructions.

Check case and port compatibility
A tether tab is not automatically compatible with every case. TOIA says its tab is designed for full-coverage cases with a closed bottom and a small charging-port opening; it excludes open-bottom cases and cases with wide port openings: TOIA phone lanyard.
- Confirm the case closes fully around the phone after the tab is installed.
- Check that the tab lies flat and its loop exits cleanly through the opening.
- Do not force the phone into a case if the tab makes it bulge or prevents a secure fit.
- If the bottom is open or the port cutout is too wide, consider a case with a built-in lanyard hole or a different tether accessory.
Ringke describes its Holder Link as a thin smartphone tether for straps, and iFace describes a removable tab fitted inside a case. Check the exact product’s fit instructions: Ringke Holder Link and iFace phone strap holder.

Check charging access before relying on it
A tether loop exits at the charging-port opening, so the fit of a charging cable depends on the case, tab, and connector. Satechi’s product is a lanyard that includes a USB-C cable intended for charging; compatibility still depends on the device and connector. Follow the product directions and check that your cable seats properly rather than assuming every tab leaves every charging setup unobstructed.

- Wrist strap: Keeps the phone close to your hand.
- Neck lanyard: Lets you carry the phone around your neck.
- Crossbody strap: Carries the phone across the body and leaves your hands freer.
Before choosing, check the connector type, adjustability, and whether you can detach the phone from the strap. Product descriptions identify these carry styles, but the cited sources do not provide independent comparisons of comfort, strength, or drop prevention.

Understand the limits of a phone lanyard
SmallRig warns users of its phone wrist strap: “Avoid use during high-intensity sports to prevent accidental drops.” Treat that as a product-specific precaution, not a universal safety standard.
The manufacturer and merchant instructions cited here do not establish a universal load rating for tether tabs or lanyards, or show that they are suitable for climbing, sports, or other high-force activity. A lanyard should not be treated as a guarantee against drops or phone damage.
