What YouTube can—and cannot—do to find copies
YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool is designed mainly to find full or nearly full reuploads that were uploaded after your video. It may not find short clips, and uploading first matters because the tool looks for later uploads. YouTube says it relies on copyright owners to report unauthorized uses of their content; the tool is not a guarantee that every copy will be found.
A match does not by itself establish infringement. The uploader may have permission, or the use may be covered by an exception such as fair use or fair dealing. Build a record of what you own

- Save original exports and, where practical, source or project files.
- Keep licenses and written permissions for music, footage, images, and other third-party material in your video.
- Retain relevant notices, messages, and records of contact with uploaders.
- Keep evidence of suspected unauthorized copies, such as the video URL and relevant correspondence.

Find and review likely reuploads
- Publish your original video first where practicable. The Copyright Match Tool is oriented toward copies uploaded after the original.
- Open YouTube Studio and check the Copyright or Matches area if it is available to your channel. YouTube’s tool access and display can vary; consult its current instructions for using Copyright Match Tool.
- Inspect the whole match. Compare the material, upload context, and any apparent authorization. A partial clip or similar subject matter is not automatically a stolen copy.

Submit a removal request carefully
A copyright removal request is a legal request, not simply a way to flag something you dislike. Submit one only when you have a good-faith basis that you own or are authorized to enforce the relevant rights. Consider permission, licensing, fair use, fair dealing, and other applicable exceptions before proceeding. If YouTube finds a request valid, it can remove the video and issue a copyright strike. A scheduled request may provide seven days for the uploader to act first; see YouTube’s explanation of removal requests.
Keep copies of the material supporting your claim and document related communications. If the ownership or exception question is legally complicated, consult a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction rather than relying on a match indicator.

Common problems and what to do
- No match appears: The tool may not identify short clips, and it is oriented toward later uploads. Keep evidence and report a specific video through YouTube’s removal process if you have grounds to do so.
- A match looks similar but is not a full copy: Review the entire video and context. Permission or a legal exception may apply; similarity alone is not enough to establish infringement.
- You do not see the Match Tool: Tool availability can vary. Use the general copyright removal request route for a specific allegedly infringing video, or review YouTube’s information about which copyright management tools may fit your needs.
- You are unsure about third-party material in your own video: Check your licenses and permissions before asserting rights over the whole video. Keep those records with your source files.
- You have frequent matches across a large catalog: Review whether your exclusive rights and operational capacity fit Content ID or enterprise management. Neither route is guaranteed to be available to every creator.
