Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Then secure your account with a unique password and multifactor authentication (MFA) if available. A DNA test can reveal information about relatives as well as you, and deleting an account may not automatically destroy a stored sample or every copy of your data.
Before you send a sample, find out what happens to it
Read the provider’s current terms of use, privacy policy, consent choices, and research-participation explanation. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to ask who will have access to their data and whether they can delete it. Its guidance puts the sensitivity plainly: “Know that your DNA data is sensitive because it’s about who you are.” (FTC consumer guidance, June 16, 2023.)
Look for specific answers to these questions rather than relying on broad assurances such as “we protect your privacy”:
- What information is collected: the physical sample, raw genetic data, interpreted reports, account details, or other health information?
- Which employees, laboratories, service providers, researchers, and commercial partners may access or receive it?
- Is research participation optional, separately consented to, and changeable later? Does declining affect the service?
- How long is the physical sample kept, and how is it destroyed?
- How long are raw data, reports, and account records retained, and does a deletion request reach laboratories and contractors?
- What privacy controls can you change, and how does the provider respond to legal requests?
Do not assume that “research” means a nonprofit recipient or that a sharing choice is permanent or reversible. Read the provider’s explanation of recipients and later changes. Policies, settings, and legal requirements can change, so check the current materials for the service you are considering.

Understand what a DNA result can expose
Genetic information can matter to biological relatives, not just the person who submits the sample. Results may uncover unexpected relationships or information relevant to family members. The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) explains that, except for identical twins, each person’s DNA sequence is unique; a DNA sample therefore cannot be truly anonymized. Removing a name does not guarantee that genetic information cannot be linked back to someone.
Before testing, weigh the ancestry or health information you expect to receive against these privacy implications. The choice may also affect relatives who did not submit a sample and may not want family connections or genetic details revealed.

Protect your account—and keep account security in perspective
A strong sign-in method can reduce the risk of someone accessing your account, but it cannot control what the company retains, shares, or deletes. Use a long, unique password that you do not reuse, and do not assume the default privacy settings are the strongest available. The FTC recommends enabling MFA for DNA-kit accounts if the service offers it.
Select the strongest MFA method the provider supports. If the service supports security keys, a compatible hardware key is an option: NIST describes hardware FIDO authenticators as phishing-resistant. Compatibility depends on the provider and your device. A key protects sign-in; it does not change the company’s data practices.

Be cautious with downloads and third-party services
Think carefully before downloading raw genetic data or uploading it to another genealogy or interpretation service. Once you transfer data to another company, the original testing provider is no longer responsible for a privacy breach at the recipient. Review the new service’s own access, sharing, retention, and deletion rules before uploading anything.

Request deletion of both digital data and the physical sample
Account deletion, genetic-data deletion, and sample destruction are separate questions. Ask the provider what a request covers: raw DNA data, interpreted reports, account information, copies held by laboratories or contractors, and the saliva or other biological sample. Also ask what may remain in backups or records kept for legal reasons, and request written confirmation of what was deleted and what was destroyed.
The distinction matters in practice. In a 2023 FTC matter involving 1Health.io (formerly Vitagene), the FTC said unsecured cloud storage exposed nearly 2,400 consumer health reports and raw genetic data from at least 227 people. The FTC’s final order required the company to instruct contract laboratories to destroy samples retained for more than 180 days and imposed affirmative-consent requirements for sharing health data. Those figures and remedies describe that specific case; the 180-day requirement is not a general deadline for other testing services. (FTC announcement of the final order.)

Know the limits of U.S. privacy protections
Do not assume that a direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetics company is covered by HIPAA simply because it offers a health-related test. HIPAA’s Privacy Rule applies to individually identifiable health information held by HIPAA-covered entities; a consumer testing service is not automatically one. The FTC can also act against deceptive privacy or security claims and failures to protect information.
The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) restricts employers and health insurers from requesting or requiring genetic information and prohibits certain discriminatory uses. It does not provide the same protection for life, disability, or long-term-care insurance. State genomic privacy laws vary, and a person’s location and the specific testing arrangement can affect which rules apply.
Law-enforcement access is not a single rule that applies to every consumer DNA database. NHGRI describes investigative genetic genealogy as a method that combines genetic analysis with publicly available genealogy information. Check the specific provider’s policy and current settings rather than assuming either universal access or universal exclusion.
