These steps address different kinds of access and data; no single setting handles them all. The controls available depend on your device model, account, region, and enabled features.
Start with the physical microphone and camera controls
Mute the microphone when you need privacy
Find the device’s physical microphone mute button or switch and use it during sensitive conversations or whenever voice control is unnecessary. A software setting, a microphone indicator, and a physical control are not interchangeable: the physical control is the option to use when you want the device not to listen. The FTC recommends checking for a physical button or switch that stops listening. Amazon says activating the microphone-off button on Echo devices cuts microphone power; Google describes microphone controls and visible indicators when audio is sent. Check the manual for your exact model because control placement and behavior differ. FTC consumer advice, Amazon’s privacy explanation, and Google Nest commitments explain their respective controls.
Shut off or cover a camera, if present
Use a built-in shutter or the device’s camera-off control. Amazon says most Echo Show devices have a built-in shutter. Google’s Nest Hub Max has a camera, while other Nest Hub models differ; check your model’s specifications rather than assuming all smart displays include one. If you use a physical camera cover, first check the camera location, sensor placement, and fit. A cover blocks only the camera lens: it does not mute microphones or stop other data collection. Amazon’s explanation and Google’s privacy hub describe these model differences.
Review what the assistant has stored
Open your manufacturer’s current account privacy or activity controls, review the saved interactions, and delete recordings or history you do not want retained. If the account offers a retention or automatic-deletion choice, select a period that suits you. Google documents controls for reviewing and deleting Assistant activity; Amazon describes ways to review and delete voice history and set storage preferences. Exact menus and choices can change, so use the current controls for your account and region rather than relying on a universal menu path. #1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Deleting saved activity and stopping future collection are separate actions. Deletion alone does not mute a microphone, disable a camera, or turn off optional sensing features.
Disable optional features you do not use
Review settings for features such as personalization, voice recognition, video calling, home monitoring, sleep sensing, and other sensor-based functions. Turn off the ones you do not need. What a feature collects and where its data is processed depend on the device, permissions, configuration, and service. Google says some services send audio or video to Google, while some information for certain features can be processed on-device. Do not assume that every feature uploads all raw sensor data—or that on-device processing applies to every feature. Google’s privacy hub describes how settings and features affect data use.

Account for other people in the room
In a shared space, household members or visitors may trigger the assistant, and its spoken responses can be heard by others. Let people in the home know when the microphone, camera, calling, or monitoring functions are enabled. For sensitive conversations, use the physical microphone mute or keep the display out of the room. Google notes that guests may interact with connected home devices, and that behavior depends on the account and settings. Google’s privacy hub provides details.
Check the policy for your brand, model, and region
Smart displays are not interchangeable from a privacy standpoint. Hardware controls, account-level activity options, and feature behavior vary by model and region. Google describes data collection as subject to settings and permissions, with some processing on-device and some services sending audio or video to Google. Amazon describes physical microphone and camera controls and account-level voice-history options. Consult the current documentation for your exact device and account rather than assuming one brand’s controls or descriptions apply to another. See Google’s privacy hub and Amazon’s privacy explanation.

There is also regulatory context: the FTC’s case page says Amazon agreed to overhaul deletion practices and implement privacy safeguards to settle charges involving Alexa data deletion and children’s privacy. That settlement is not evidence that every current device behaves the same way or that any particular current setting is ineffective. FTC case page.

Home Assistant is one option for people who want more local management of compatible smart-home devices. Its publisher says the platform runs on home hardware, stores data locally, and communicates directly with supported devices over a local network; optional Home Assistant Cloud services are available for selected uses. It requires compatible equipment and setup, and it is not a drop-in replacement for every smart display’s assistant or voice features. Details are in the Home Assistant privacy FAQ.
