You can reduce how widely your photos and videos are exposed, but no setting, accessory, or metadata tool can guarantee that an image won’t be face-swapped once someone can access it. If an intimate image—real or AI-altered—is shared without your consent in the United States, report it to the platform; covered platforms must remove qualifying content and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request.
Reduce exposure before you share
Think of prevention as limiting access, not making an image impossible to misuse. Before posting, consider whether the image needs to be public and who needs to see it. Where a service offers audience or resharing controls, review them and choose settings that fit your comfort level. These choices may reduce exposure, but they are not a guarantee: anyone who can view an image may be able to save, copy, or capture it.
- Be selective about posting clear, close-up photos and videos publicly.
- Review the audience and resharing options available for each post; controls differ by platform.
- Do not rely on removing photo metadata, using a privacy screen, or storing a physical copy as protection against face-swapping. None prevents misuse of an image that is already accessible.
Know what the U.S. removal process covers
The TAKE IT DOWN Act’s removal process concerns covered nonconsensual intimate images, including digitally altered images and AI deepfakes. It does not establish a 48-hour removal rule for every ordinary face-swap or every unwanted use of someone’s face. The FTC describes the Act and its scope at What to know about the TAKE IT DOWN Act.

The 48-hour deadline applies to covered platforms after they receive a valid removal request. The requirement also covers known identical copies of the reported content; it is not a promise that every version, repost, or copy everywhere online will be found and removed. If an intimate image is posted without consent
- Report the post to the platform. Use the post’s report option or the service’s support process for nonconsensual intimate imagery. Follow the service’s instructions and provide the details needed to identify the content and make a valid request.
- Keep a record for follow-up. Note the post’s URL, account or service, date, and any report confirmation or case number. Preserve relevant details without forwarding or reposting the intimate image.
- Follow up if the process fails. If the service has no removal process, its process is broken, or covered content remains after 48 hours from a valid request, report the issue at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC also points people to local law enforcement and the FBI.
Choose a support tool that fits the situation
These free options serve different purposes. Their coverage depends on eligibility and participating platforms; none should be treated as a guarantee of removal everywhere.

If a child is targeted
For an explicit image of someone who was under 18 when it was taken, use NCMEC’s Take It Down service to submit an anonymous removal request on participating platforms. You can also report suspected child sexual exploitation through NCMEC’s CyberTipline. Do not download, share, or forward suspected child sexual abuse material to document it.

NCMEC reported that CyberTipline submissions categorized as AI-generated involved more than 158,000 images and videos from January 2023 through December 2025. NCMEC cautions that not every report with an AI connection concerns AI-generated child sexual abuse material; the figure describes reports, not a verified count of distinct victims or images.

Removing a post from a covered platform can help address a specific incident, and image-fingerprinting services can help participating platforms identify matching content. Neither approach makes a face-swapped image impossible, guarantees removal from every service, or supplies a universal remedy for ordinary non-intimate face-swaps. The statutory process described here is U.S.-specific; legal options elsewhere depend on local law.
