The simplest reliable protection is a case made for your exact phone model with a raised rim around the camera. Keep the phone away from keys, gravel, and other gritty or sharp objects. A separate lens protector is optional: check its fit and possible effects on the camera and device features before adding another layer.
Why phone camera lenses can get scratched
The exposed part is usually the camera’s outer cover glass, not the internal lens. On some phones, that cover glass sits higher than the rear panel, making it more vulnerable to contact and damage. Huawei Support describes this exposure and advises using a case that wraps around the camera-cover edge: Huawei Support’s guidance for scratched or damaged camera covers.
Scratches matter because the cover glass sits in the camera’s optical path. Corning explains that damage to camera cover glass can distort incoming light and cause flares or other image aberrations. Its Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ materials are designed for camera-cover applications with optical and scratch-resistance goals, but that does not establish that every phone uses those materials or that any accessory will be optically invisible.

Start with a case that protects the camera edge
Choose a case made for the exact make and model of your phone. Look for a camera surround that stands slightly proud of the camera cover, so a flat surface is more likely to touch the case than the glass. Huawei specifically recommends a case that wraps around the camera-cover edge.

- Check the exact model name and generation before ordering; similar-looking phones may have different camera layouts.
- Check that the case rim surrounds the camera area without covering a lens, flash, microphone, or sensor.
- Keep the phone separate from keys, gravel, and other sharp or gritty objects. A raised rim does not prevent damage if abrasive debris gets between the case and camera cover.
Should you add a separate camera lens protector?
A model-specific protector can provide a replaceable outer layer, but it also adds a surface in front of the camera. Compatibility and optical performance should not be assumed. Sony advises using protection intended for the device model and warns that third-party accessories can cover lenses or interfere with device operation. Corning’s explanation of how damage to camera cover glass affects light also makes optical performance relevant when choosing an added layer.

- Whether the protector fits the camera layout and case you use.
- Whether it leaves every lens, flash, microphone, and sensor unobstructed.
- Whether it adds a surface that could affect photos or flash use.
- Whether you can remove it cleanly if it causes a problem.
For example, ESR lists a lens protector for iPhone 17 and advertises case compatibility for that product. Those are claims by the accessory maker about that named product, not independent findings or a guarantee for other protectors: ESR’s iPhone 17 protector listing.

If a new phone has shipping or protective film covering its camera, remove it before taking photos. Samsung India warns that factory protective vinyl left on a new Galaxy phone can prevent proper camera photos. This warning concerns factory film; it is not proof that every aftermarket protector will cause a problem. Follow the phone maker’s setup guidance for the specific model.

What to do if the camera cover is already scratched
Clean the camera area gently with a soft, clean cloth before deciding the cover is scratched; dirt or smudges can also affect images. If a mark remains and photos show flares, haze, or other artifacts, contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider to ask about inspection and repair. Avoid scraping the cover or applying an unverified coating, which could cause further damage.
