Use two layers for different jobs: a fitted waterproof mattress protector or water-resistant sheet to help keep urine out of the mattress, and an absorbent bed pad on top to catch leaks and simplify cleanup. After a leak, change wet bedding and clean and dry exposed skin promptly. These products help manage leakage; they do not treat its cause.
Set up the bed with separate protection layers
- Protect the mattress. Put a fitted waterproof mattress protector or water-resistant sheet over the mattress, following its instructions. Check that it fits the mattress size and depth and is compatible with the mattress. This is the mattress-level barrier, not the absorbent layer. Continence Health Australia’s product guidance discusses checking product features and care instructions.
- Add an absorbent pad. Place a washable bed pad on top of the mattress or linens where it can cover the area most likely to get wet. Check that it is large enough and stays in position. The NHS describes washable bed pads that sit on top of the mattress and soak up overnight leaks, but does not prescribe one placement method for everyone: NHS guidance on incontinence products.
- Keep clean replacements close by. Store spare sheets and pads within reach so wet bedding can be removed and replaced promptly. Wash and dry each item according to its own care label; there is no single laundering temperature established for every product.
No setup can be assumed to prevent every leak. Make sure the pad covers enough of the bed and remains positioned beneath the sleeper.
Choose the right type of protection

Underpads may be disposable or reusable, and may have waterproof backing. MedlinePlus describes these product types; the NIDDK also lists large disposable pads as an option for protecting beds and chairs.
The official sources cited here do not provide standardized absorbency ratings or comparable brand test results. Compare coverage, construction, fit, and care requirements rather than relying on an unverified capacity claim. Continence Health Australia suggests trying samples before buying in bulk where possible.

After a leak, change bedding and care for skin
- Remove wet clothing and linen and replace them with clean, dry items.
- Clean urine-exposed skin and dry it thoroughly. MedlinePlus warns that skin can break down after prolonged contact with urine.
- Consider a skin barrier cream or lotion after cleaning. MedlinePlus identifies zinc oxide, lanolin, and petrolatum as ingredients that can form a moisture barrier; barrier products do not replace cleaning after urine or stool exposure. - Clean a wet mattress only as its maker’s care instructions allow. MedlinePlus gives a vinegar-and-water method followed by baking soda after drying, but that advice should not be treated as suitable for every mattress: materials and warranties differ. Know what bedding products can and cannot do
Pads, briefs, and mattress covers manage the practical consequences of leakage; they do not identify or treat its cause. The NIDDK describes products such as pads, briefs, and skin creams as ways to cope with bladder-control problems, including leaks that may continue after treatment.
