For shooting in rain, use a rain cover that fits your specific camera-and-lens combination; use a bag to stow the gear between shots. Neither weather-resistant labeling nor an improvised plastic sleeve guarantees protection from water. Check your camera and lens manuals, confirm cover compatibility, and follow your camera maker’s care instructions if the equipment gets wet.

First check what your camera and lens can withstand

Weather resistance is model-specific, not a universal promise. Read the manuals for both the camera body and lens, and look for stated limits and required precautions. Do not infer that one weather-resistant component makes the whole setup safe in rain.

For example, Sony says its LCR-ELW is designed for rain, snow, and wind-driven precipitation, but does not guarantee that it will completely prevent moisture ingress during severe blizzards. By contrast, the manual for the Ricoh Optio X says that model is not weather-, water-, or liquid-resistant. Those statements apply to the named products; check the documentation for your own equipment before going out.

Choose protection for the moment you need it

Option Best use Fit and operation Protection and limits
Dedicated rain cover Actively shooting in rain Check body, lens length and diameter, hood, accessories, attachment points, and access to the viewfinder, display, and controls. Claims and coverage vary by model. Check the maker’s stated limits; do not treat a cover as protection against submersion.
Low-cost sleeve Occasional or budget-conscious shooting when the sleeve fits the setup Check that you can operate the camera and that the sleeve accommodates the lens and hood. Digital Camera World describes the OP/TECH Rainsleeve as a clear, plastic-bag-style product. Its protection should not be assumed equivalent to a fitted cover.
Camera bag Carrying and stowing gear between shots Check the bag’s own rain protection, closures, and any supplied rain cover. A bag is not a substitute for a fitted cover while shooting in sustained rain unless its maker specifically says it is suitable for that use.
Improvised plastic Emergency backup when a proper cover is unavailable Keep the lens, viewfinder, controls, and hands usable; secure it without interfering with camera operation. No particular homemade construction method is validated here. Treat it as temporary protection, not a tested or guaranteed waterproof solution.

What to check before buying a camera rain cover

  • Exact fit: Confirm compatibility with your camera body and the lens you plan to use. Account for the lens hood and attached accessories, and check the cover’s dimensions where provided.
  • Usability: Look for a clear control or display window, workable viewfinder access, and attachment points that let you adjust settings and hold the camera securely.
  • Coverage claims: Read the maker’s wording about water repellency, materials, seams, and weather limits. Water-repellent does not mean waterproof in every condition.
  • Setup and storage: Check how the cover attaches and how quickly you can deploy it. Consider whether it packs into an included pouch and whether the design suits repeated use.
  • Strap routing: Digital Camera World warns that threading a strap outside a cover compromises water resistance. Follow the cover maker’s instructions for carrying and attachment.

Examples of dedicated covers

Canon ERC-R5S

Canon says the ERC-R5S is made of acrylic and nylon with high water repellency and provides protection against water for prolonged shooting in rain. It attaches to the camera’s accessory shoe, with front fasteners securing the cover around the lens. A transparent window lets users view displays and access rear controls. Canon also notes that viewfinder shooting may be difficult and that some viewfinder functions cannot be used.

Sony LCR-ELW

Sony describes the LCR-ELW as a large white cover for compatible Alpha cameras and lenses. It has an adjustable fastening strap, a transparent window for viewing the LCD, and an integrated pouch. Sony says the material is breathable and water-repellent, and specifies water-vapor permeability of at least 20,000 g/m²/24h. Use a bag between shots, not as a shooting cover

A camera bag is useful for carrying and stowing equipment when you pause or move between locations. A bag’s protection depends on its own materials, closures, and rain cover; verify those details with its maker. The sources cited here do not establish that a generic bag protects a camera while it is being used in sustained rain, so use a fitted shooting cover for that job.

When DIY plastic may help—and when it falls short

If rain starts unexpectedly and no proper cover is available, plastic may serve as a temporary barrier while you reach shelter or pack the camera away. There is no validated homemade pattern here, so do not treat a bag or plastic wrap as a dependable substitute for a fitted cover during a long or exposed shoot.

What to do if the camera gets wet

Follow the instructions in the manual for your exact camera model. The Ricoh Optio X manual, for that model, says: “Should the camera get wet from rain, splashing water, or any other liquid, wipe it off immediately with a dry soft cloth.” It also warns that rapid temperature changes can create condensation inside and outside that camera. Check your own manual for applicable drying and temperature guidance; the Ricoh instructions are not universal.
