Before submitting sensitive material, remove anything the task does not need, use redacted or synthetic examples, and check the current policies and settings of both the comparison service and the provider receiving the request. For confidential organizational data, use only an approved account and configuration reviewed for that purpose.
Why a comparison tool creates more than one data-handling point
A comparison interface can act as an intermediary: it receives your prompt and transmits it to a model provider. Depending on the tool and settings, the request may go to a provider you selected, to several providers, or to a provider chosen by automatic routing. A model name in the interface may not fully identify the actual destination if routing or fallback behavior can change it.
OpenRouter, for example, says its inputs are transmitted to the provider selected by the user or selected through automatic routing, and that provider practices differ. It says OpenRouter does not use inputs or outputs for its own model training, but notes that some providers may retain or use them for training or improvement. Its policy also treats persistent file uploads separately from ordinary inference inputs: uploaded files may remain stored until deleted or the account is closed. These are OpenRouter’s stated practices, not a description of every comparison service. Read OpenRouter’s privacy policy.
What to check before you submit a prompt
- Classify the information. Treat credentials, authentication tokens, health or financial details, customer and employee records, unreleased plans, source code, and legally protected material as sensitive unless your organization has explicitly classified it otherwise.
- Minimize and transform the prompt. Remove names, identifiers, secrets, and surrounding records that are not needed. Replace real details with placeholders such as
[CUSTOMER]or a synthetic example that preserves the structure of the problem. Check whether the remaining combination of details could still identify someone or expose a secret indirectly. The FTC advises businesses to collect only what they need, and the ICO describes data minimization as using no more personal data than necessary for the purpose. FTC data security guidance · ICO AI data protection guidance. - Trace where the request goes. Find out which comparison service receives the prompt, whether it is sent to one model or multiple providers, whether routing is automatic, and whether a fallback can change the destination.
- Read both policy layers. Check the intermediary’s privacy policy and terms, then the current data practices of each provider that may receive the prompt. Look for training or improvement use, logging, retention, staff or support access, subprocessors, region, deletion, and separate rules for files, images, audio, or other modalities.
- Verify the settings on the account you will actually use. Confirm that the control is available on your plan, enabled for the relevant workspace, and applies to the specific endpoint and features involved. Save evidence of the configuration where appropriate.
- Escalate organizational data. For regulated, client-confidential, employee, or trade-secret information, follow your organization’s procurement, privacy, security, and legal review. Do not assume a consumer account has the terms or controls of an enterprise arrangement.
- Choose a fallback before you need one. If you cannot establish acceptable terms and controls, use a synthetic prompt, an approved provider directly, or a locally hosted model if it fits your organization’s risk and capabilities.
These steps help reduce exposure; they do not certify that a particular service is safe or that a specific use is lawful.

Compare concrete privacy practices, not a single privacy score
The available guidance does not establish a universal privacy score that makes comparison services directly comparable. Assess the dimensions that determine what happens to your particular prompt:
| Dimension | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Routing | Does one prompt go to one provider, multiple providers, or an automatic router? Can a fallback change the destination? |
| Training and improvement | Can the intermediary or a downstream provider use prompts, outputs, feedback, or files to train, fine-tune, evaluate, or improve models? Which setting or contract controls that use? |
| Retention and deletion | What is stored, for how long, in which logs or application features, and how can you request deletion? Do uploaded files have a separate lifecycle? |
| Access and sharing | Which staff, subprocessors, service providers, or model providers may access prompts or outputs? What do the applicable terms say? |
| Security and governance | Are access controls, incident procedures, audit information, and an accountable privacy or security contact described? |
| Scope | Do the terms and controls apply to the exact consumer interface or API, business plan, model, region, endpoint, and feature you intend to use? |
Two examples show why scope matters. OpenRouter’s own no-training statement does not make every downstream provider’s practices identical. OpenAI’s API documentation says Modified Abuse Monitoring and Zero Data Retention require approval and notes that some endpoints and features can still store application state. That example applies to OpenAI’s platform APIs; it is not a general setting available across AI comparison tools. OpenRouter privacy policy · OpenAI API data controls.

Why “not used for training” is not a complete privacy answer
Training is only one possible use or exposure point. A service may still log or retain requests, allow personnel or subprocessors to access them, route them to another provider, store uploaded files separately, or have limits on deletion. Ask about each of those practices and whether the answer applies to your account tier and enabled features.
Privacy risks can also involve information learned during model training, not just the handling of a prompt after submission. The ICO discusses model inversion and membership inference, where outputs can in some circumstances help infer information about people represented in training data. The risk depends on the model and data context; this is not evidence that a specific comparison service exposes submitted prompts. The ICO’s guidance page says it is under review following changes made by the UK Data (Use and Access) Act, so check current UK guidance before relying on it for legal conclusions. Replacing a name does not necessarily make personal data anonymous. The ICO distinguishes pseudonymization from anonymization: pseudonymized personal data remains within the scope of data protection law. Remove or alter indirect identifiers as well as obvious names where the context could still point to a person.
