Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk before recording people, avoid camera use where privacy is expected, and treat any recording light as notice—not consent. Camera-equipped glasses can make capturing images quick and discreet, so privacy protection depends on how you use them as well as on the device’s indicators and controls. Ray-Ban Meta’s documented features offer a useful example, but controls and safeguards vary by model.
Before you take a photo or video
Ask in a way that allows a real no
Ask the people who may be identifiable before capturing them. Make it easy to decline: do not pressure someone, and do not record first and ask afterward. If asking is impractical, skip the shot or reframe it so people are not identifiable.
Respect places where people expect privacy
Do not use the camera in sensitive settings or places where people reasonably expect privacy. Meta’s responsible-use guidance recommends asking permission before capture and avoiding sensitive locations or places where people would not want to be recorded: Meta Responsible Innovation in AI Glasses & Quest. This is company guidance, not a complete statement of the law in every location.
What a recording light can—and cannot—tell people
On Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the manufacturer describes two LEDs: an inward-facing notification light and a front-facing capture light. The capture LED signals photo or video capture; Ray-Ban’s US FAQ says the lights blink for photos and the capture LED remains lit during video recording. The FAQ also describes capture by button or voice command. These are manufacturer descriptions, not an independent audit of every mode. See the Ray-Ban Meta FAQ.

A light is useful notice, but it cannot prove that everyone nearby saw it, understood it, or agreed to be recorded. A 2024 study of Ray-Ban Stories wearers found that participants wanted more reliable indicators and felt a burden to protect bystanders’ privacy. Those findings concern that study’s participants and an earlier glasses model, not all wearers or devices: “In Focus, Out of Privacy: The Wearer’s Perspective on the Privacy Dilemma of Camera Glasses”.
Meta says its glasses prevent photo or video capture when the capture light is covered. In a July 2026 explanation, Meta specified that second-generation glasses automatically disable the camera when they detect the capture LED is blocked; capture remains unavailable until the light is unblocked. Meta also says the shutter sound is audible to the wearer but is not a practical signal for people at a distance: Meta’s July 2026 explanation of the recording indicator. These claims apply to the described Meta products and safeguards; do not assume another brand or model behaves the same way. Even when a light is visible, it is not a substitute for asking.

Learn your exact glasses’ controls
Before wearing camera glasses around other people, check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model and generation. For Ray-Ban Meta, the FAQ describes a physical power switch, a capture button, hands-free voice capture, the capture LED, and notification settings in the Meta AI app. The FAQ’s US-market descriptions should not be taken as specifications for other models or markets.
- Find how to switch the glasses off and how to stop a recording.
- Learn which button or voice command starts a photo or video, and how the device signals capture.
- Check the companion app’s privacy and data settings, and understand which features use the camera or send data for processing.
Available product guidance establishes that Meta offers camera-based AI features and privacy/data guidance, but does not establish every current setting’s retention or processing behavior. Consult the current documentation for your model and feature rather than assuming that a capture stays only on the glasses or that it is handled in a particular way.

If someone objects to being recorded
- Stop recording as soon as you can.
- Do not share the capture while the person’s objection is unresolved.
- Delete it where appropriate, and explain plainly if you cannot or will not delete it.
This is a respectful way to respond, not a universal legal duty established here. Whether you may record, keep, or share a particular capture depends on local law and the circumstances.
Check local law for conversations and private spaces
Recording and privacy rules differ by jurisdiction and context. Check current local law before recording conversations or using a camera in a private space; this article is not a jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal guide.
One recent California development illustrates why proposed rules should not be confused with current law: the Associated Press reported on October 1, 2026, that Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have penalized certain recordings without permission in specified private settings and required recording indicators on smart glasses and other wearable devices beginning in 2028. The proposal was not enacted, so its proposed requirements are not current California law. The AP report also noted existing law concerning recording in places generally considered private, but it is not a comprehensive legal survey: Associated Press report on the California bill veto.
