You can reduce casual copying of portfolio photos without adding a visible watermark: publish a smaller presentation copy, keep the original file private, restrict gallery access where appropriate, and retain creator and copyright metadata. These steps make some uses less convenient or limit the quality of the copy available online, but they cannot stop a viewer from capturing or reusing an image they can see.
Choose what visitors are allowed to see
The strongest watermark-free starting point is to separate the image you show from the high-resolution original you deliver or archive. Make a portfolio-ready presentation copy and serve that copy publicly; do not expose the original file if visitors do not need it. WIPO lists small or low-resolution images and displaying only a portion of an image among possible online strategies for artwork. Its DPI example is not a universal web-resolution setting, so choose dimensions based on your portfolio’s viewing needs rather than treating it as a fixed rule. WIPO HIPAMS Toolkit
- Smaller preview: Keeps an image usable for portfolio viewing while making the served copy less useful for some larger reproductions. The trade-off is reduced detail, and screenshots or other reuse remain possible.
- Crop or portion: Exposes less of the complete work. Use this only when the crop still represents the work accurately and does not hide context a prospective client needs.
- Limit display size or block originals: If your gallery host offers these controls, configure the largest displayed image and ensure public pages do not serve originals through a separate option. The control affects what the service delivers; it cannot prevent capturing the displayed copy.
Use gallery controls for friction, not security
Gallery platforms may let you disable downloads, show a right-click warning, limit image display size, or require a password. These controls can reduce routine saving or narrow who can view a gallery, but they are not a technical guarantee against copying. An authorized viewer can still capture what is on screen, and platform controls vary by service, plan, and configuration.
As one platform-specific example, SmugMug documents controls for protecting images and says its right-click protection is not foolproof; it also notes that originals are not watermarked. Check the settings and behavior of your own platform rather than assuming the same controls or defaults apply everywhere. SmugMug Support: Protect my images

- Disable downloads or add right-click messaging to add friction for ordinary gallery visitors, not to prevent determined copying.
- Password-protect a client or private gallery when its audience should be limited. Passwords restrict access, but do not prevent an invited viewer from making a copy.
- Keep originals unavailable to public visitors and test the published gallery while signed out, so you can confirm what a normal visitor can display or download.
Retain rights metadata in the image file
Where your workflow allows, retain IPTC fields that identify the creator, credit line, and copyright notice. Google recommends keeping critical image-rights and identification metadata; the fields can help preserve attribution information when an image is encountered elsewhere. Metadata is not a lock: it may be stripped during editing, upload, or redistribution, and it does not stop someone copying the image. Google Search Central: Image metadata
Metadata complements, rather than replaces, a clear rights statement on your site or a licence that explains permitted use. The UK Intellectual Property Office notes that a missing copyright symbol does not mean an image is unprotected and that metadata may help identify the copyright owner. Know what copyright does—and does not—do
A watermark is not what creates copyright. In the United States, the Copyright Office says copyright protection for an original photograph exists once it is fixed, subject to the applicable originality standard. Registration is a separate step that provides additional legal benefits. For a U.S. work, registration is required before the owner can file an infringement lawsuit in federal court. Before relying on ownership or deciding how to respond to a use, check whether employment, commissioning, licence, privacy, or contract terms affect the image. The relevant rights holder and available remedies depend on the facts and jurisdiction.

What to do if you find an unauthorized copy
- Preserve evidence. Save the page address, screenshots, dates, and any relevant correspondence before content changes. Keep your original image and records that help establish authorship or the terms under which it was supplied.
- Identify the rights holder and jurisdiction. Confirm who owns or controls the relevant rights and where the use and service are located; those details affect which rules and procedures may apply.
- Choose a proportionate response. Depending on the circumstances, you might contact the user, offer a licence, seek mediation, use the platform’s reporting process, or obtain legal advice.
- Use U.S. notice-and-takedown procedures where applicable. The U.S. Copyright Office describes Section 512 conditions and safe-harbor provisions for online service providers. It is not a guarantee that every complaint will lead to removal, and the described framework does not impose a general affirmative monitoring obligation on providers. Combine measures to fit the portfolio
There is no watermark-free setting that makes a web-displayed photo impossible to capture. A practical approach is to publish only the presentation copy needed for viewing, restrict originals and gallery access where the audience warrants it, retain rights metadata, and keep ownership and licensing information clear. These are layers that can reduce exposure or make casual reuse less convenient—not proof that infringement cannot happen.
