Protect a live stream at both ends of delivery: authorize viewers with CloudFront signed cookies or signed URLs, and prevent them from bypassing CloudFront to fetch the origin directly. For HLS playback made up of a manifest and many segments, signed cookies are usually the better fit when the player supports cookies; use signed URLs for individual objects or clients that cannot use cookies. Require HTTPS, apply geographic restrictions only where they fit your policy, and add DRM separately if you need encryption and key authorization. These controls address different risks and are not interchangeable.

Understand what each protection layer does

A typical live-video path has an encoder, an origin that stores or packages the stream, and CloudFront distributing it to viewers. The encoder and origin depend on the existing pipeline: AWS describes MediaLive as a real-time encoder, MediaPackage as a packaging option that can support DRM, and MediaStore as an origin option when encoded formats are already suitable. CloudFront distributes the video; its caching helps delivery and can reduce repeated origin requests, but caching is not an entitlement check.

  • Signed cookies or signed URLs: authorize viewer requests made through CloudFront.
  • Origin protection: prevents direct requests that bypass CloudFront’s viewer-access rules.
  • HTTPS: protects connections in transit.
  • Geographic restrictions: restrict delivery by location at the level supported by the selected approach.
  • DRM: protects encrypted media through a separate key-authorization system.

Amazon’s CloudFront Developer Guide describes signed URLs and signed cookies as providing the same basic function: controlling who can access content. The choice is about how the viewer’s client requests that content, not which mechanism is inherently a stronger form of DRM.

Choose signed cookies or signed URLs for the player

Option Best suited to HLS considerations
Signed cookies Authorizing multiple restricted files, such as all the files for an HLS video, without changing existing URLs. One authorization can cover the manifest and its segments. Confirm that each target player supports cookies.
Signed URLs Authorizing an individual file or serving clients that do not support cookies. Signing parameters may need to be included in the URLs for objects referenced by the manifest.

AWS’s CloudFront Developer Guide recommends signed cookies for access to multiple restricted files, including HLS video files, and signed URLs for individual files or clients that do not support cookies. AWS’s CloudFront media whitepaper cautions that cookie support varies by player platform, so test the actual browsers, apps, and devices your viewers use.

Watch for the signed-URL query-parameter trap

CloudFront treats a URL with query parameters named Expires, Policy, Signature, Key-Pair-Id, or Hash-Algorithm as a signed URL. In that case, CloudFront does not fall back to signed cookies. If both methods are enabled for the same files and a viewer sends a signed URL, CloudFront evaluates the signed URL alone. Avoid using these parameter names for unrelated unsigned query data on protected URLs.

Set credential scope and lifetime deliberately

CloudFront signed credentials use a policy that can specify an expiration. A custom policy can also set a not-before time and an optional source-IP range. Use these limits to match the viewing experience: an expiry that is too short can interrupt legitimate playback, while a credential that remains valid longer than necessary increases the time in which a leaked credential may be used. IP restrictions can also affect viewers whose network address changes or who share a network egress point.

CloudFront validates a signature using a public/private key pair. AWS specifies RSA 2048 or ECDSA 256 signing keys. Protect the private signing key and issue credentials through an application or other trusted authorization path; do not expose signing secrets to viewers.

A signed credential authorizes delivery of the requested object while the credential is valid. It does not prevent an authorized viewer from capturing the playback, encrypt the media, or provide DRM key management.

Block direct access to the origin

Viewer authorization at CloudFront is ineffective if the same media is still directly readable from its origin. Protect the origin independently so requests cannot skip the distribution.

For an Amazon S3 origin

AWS recommends configuring CloudFront origin access control (OAC) to grant the distribution access to the S3 origin, then removing other unintended direct or public read access. Check the bucket policy and any other access paths so that the intended CloudFront distribution is the route to protected objects.

For a custom HTTP origin

Use an origin restriction appropriate to the architecture. AWS documents custom headers as one way to require that requests come through CloudFront; network restrictions or edge-authorization designs may suit other deployments. A header-based restriction is only useful if the origin actually checks it and the secret value is not exposed to viewers. Confirm that the origin cannot be reached through an unprotected hostname or alternate route.

For AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2

MediaPackage v2 supports CDN authorization intended to prevent direct origin requests. AWS documents CloudFront SigV4 access and a custom-header approach using X-MediaPackageV2-CDNIdentifier. In the custom-header design, the secret is stored in Secrets Manager and checked by MediaPackage. Configure the CDN, origin, secret, and permissions together, and follow AWS’s current guidance for secret rotation.

Require HTTPS through the delivery path

Use HTTPS for viewer connections and the configured origin path. This protects data in transit; it does not decide whether a viewer is entitled to the content, so retain signed authorization and origin restrictions as separate controls. AWS’s CloudFront security overview also identifies AWS WAF among its content-security options, but the appropriate WAF rules depend on the application and threat model.

Apply geographic restrictions at the right scope

CloudFront’s built-in geographic restriction uses an allow list or block list at country level and applies to all files distributed by that web distribution. It is suitable when the restriction can be expressed for the entire distribution at country granularity.

If only selected paths need a location rule, or the required granularity is finer than country, AWS describes combining CloudFront with a geolocation service and application logic that issues a signed URL only to an allowed viewer. AWS also recommends a protected S3 origin with OAC for that design. Geographic controls do not replace application authorization, origin protection, or any separate review of content rights and privacy obligations.

Add DRM when encryption and key authorization are required

Token-based access control and DRM answer different questions. Signed URLs or cookies let CloudFront decide whether a request may fetch an object. DRM encrypts media segments and integrates with key delivery and user authorization to determine whether a client may obtain and use decryption keys. AWS’s CloudFront media whitepaper describes both approaches and notes that player support for cookie-based access can vary.

Implementation checklist

  1. Map the existing pipeline. Identify the encoder, packaging stage, origin, HLS objects, viewers, and any DRM requirements before changing access controls.
  2. Choose the viewer credential. Use signed cookies for a multi-object HLS set when the real playback clients support cookies; otherwise assess signed URLs and how the manifest’s referenced URLs will be signed.
  3. Set policy limits. Choose expiry and, if appropriate, a not-before time and source-IP range that fit viewer behavior. Use an AWS-supported signing key type: RSA 2048 or ECDSA 256.
  4. Protect the origin. For S3, use OAC and remove unintended direct access. For custom origins, configure and test a suitable origin restriction. For MediaPackage v2, configure CDN authorization and its associated secret or SigV4 permissions.
  5. Enforce HTTPS. Check both the viewer-facing connection and the configured origin path.
  6. Add geographic rules only if needed. Use built-in country-level distribution restrictions when their scope fits; use an application/geolocation design for path-specific or finer-grained decisions.
  7. Test the real clients and bypass paths. Verify that authorized playback retrieves manifests and segments, unauthorized requests are denied, and direct-origin requests cannot retrieve protected media. Test expiry behavior and any supported client/network variations.

Troubleshoot common access failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Manifest loads but segments fail Authorization does not cover all requested objects, or the player does not send cookies on segment requests. Inspect the manifest’s segment URLs, cookie handling on the actual player, and whether the credential policy covers the full HLS object set.
Signed cookies appear ignored A URL contains one of CloudFront’s signed-URL query parameter names. Check for Expires, Policy, Signature, Key-Pair-Id, or Hash-Algorithm; remove unrelated uses of those names or resolve the request as a signed URL.
Playback stops before the program ends The credential expires before the viewer finishes, or a custom not-before/IP condition no longer matches. Review the policy timestamps and source-IP restriction against the expected viewing duration and viewer network behavior.
CloudFront denies an otherwise valid request The signature, key configuration, policy scope, or request parameters do not match. Check the selected credential method, signing key type and pair, policy limits, and whether the client is sending the expected credential.
Media is still reachable outside CloudFront The origin permits direct reads or has another exposed route. Test the origin URL and alternate hostnames; review S3 access with OAC or the custom-origin/MediaPackage authorization checks.
Viewer access is blocked in a permitted location A distribution-wide country rule or application geolocation decision is broader than intended. Check the allow/block list and its distribution-wide scope, or the application logic that issues signed credentials.

For AWS console labels and service behavior, consult the current Amazon CloudFront Developer Guide, CloudFront security overview, CloudFront media whitepaper, and MediaPackage v2 CDN authorization guide. Exact console paths and options can change; confirm them in the current documentation before applying a production change.
