Do not put a private, billable translation API key in a Flutter app or React web bundle. Treat a credential embedded in either client as extractable. Instead, keep the private key on a backend or serverless function and have the app call that service. A direct client call is appropriate only when the translation provider explicitly supports a public key and useful restrictions for your app.
Why a client-side key cannot be kept secret
A Flutter mobile app is distributed to users, and a React web app sends its code to users’ browsers. A determined user can inspect the app or bundled files and recover values included in them. A React .env file may help choose build configuration, but once a value is bundled into public client code it is not a secret. The same principle applies to values compiled into a mobile client.
Google Cloud’s guidance is explicit: “Don’t include API keys in client code or commit them to code repositories.” Google Cloud: Best practices for managing API keys.
Choose the credential pattern that matches your provider
| Pattern | Where the credential lives | When it fits | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct client call with a deliberately public, restricted key | In the app or browser bundle; assume users can extract it | Only when the provider explicitly supports public client keys and offers meaningful restrictions for the target app | Less backend work, but restrictions and usage controls—not secrecy—must limit misuse |
| Backend or serverless proxy holding a private key | On a server you control, separate from the client | For a private or billable translation-provider credential | Requires hosting and backend controls; adds a service hop to requests |
Google Cloud describes the server-side pattern this way: “The client should pass requests to the server, which can add the credential and issue the request.” Google Cloud: Best practices for managing API keys. Decide between these patterns by checking the provider’s supported authentication method, available application restrictions, abuse controls, hosting effort, and latency. Application restrictions are defense in depth; they do not hide a key included in a general-purpose client.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a proxy that cannot be abused as an open relay
The proxy should do more than attach the translation key. It should decide who may translate, which operations they may request, and how much usage they may consume before contacting the provider.
- Authenticate the app’s user or account. Do not treat possession of a client-visible API key as proof of authorization for valuable operations.
- Authorize the requested operation. Allow only the translation functions the product needs; reject unsupported provider features and unexpected parameters.
- Validate and bound input. Check request shape and language or operation fields, and impose request-size limits appropriate to the product.
- Apply quotas and rate limits. Enforce limits per user or account, as well as any broader service limits. OWASP recommends HTTP 429 responses when requests arrive too quickly.
- Call the provider from the server. Store and use the provider credential server-side, following that provider’s documented authentication and transport method.
- Keep credentials out of logs. Avoid logging authorization headers, secrets, or full request details that could expose sensitive data.
- Plan for abuse and compromise. Monitor usage, revoke keys when clients violate usage agreements, and maintain a process to replace a compromised credential.
OWASP warns: “Do not rely exclusively on API keys to protect sensitive, critical or high-value resources.” See the OWASP REST Security Cheat Sheet.

Restrict keys and send them using the provider’s documented method
If the provider supports restrictions, grant a key access only to the APIs it needs and, where possible, limit which application or server identities can use it. Google Cloud recommends both API restrictions and application restrictions. Its documented application restriction types include website referrers, server IP addresses, Android applications, and iOS applications; separate keys may be needed for different client types. The available controls depend on the provider, so use the translation vendor’s current documentation rather than assuming Google Cloud settings apply elsewhere. See Google Cloud: Manage API keys and Adding restrictions to API keys.
For Google APIs, Google advises against putting a key in a URL query parameter because URLs can be exposed through scans. It recommends the x-goog-api-key header or a client library. For another translation provider, use its documented header or credential mechanism; do not assume that Google’s header name is accepted. See Google Cloud’s API key best practices.

Google Cloud says, “Unrestricted API keys are insecure.” Google Cloud: Manage API keys. Restrictions reduce exposure but cannot make a private key embedded in client code confidential.
Google Cloud production credentials: a specific recommendation
For most Google Cloud APIs, Google recommends planning toward IAM policies and short-lived service-account credentials with least privilege rather than relying on production authorization keys. Google documents a specific Gemini API exception; do not apply this Google-specific guidance automatically to other translation vendors. See Google Cloud: Best practices for managing API keys.

Firebase API keys are a limited exception
Not every value called an API key is a secret. Firebase documents that its API key is not the security boundary for data in Realtime Database, Cloud Firestore, or Cloud Storage; Firebase Security Rules and App Check provide the relevant protections. Under Firebase’s documented configuration, keys restricted to Firebase services do not need to be treated as secrets. This exception is specific to Firebase and does not make a private translation-provider key safe to ship in Flutter or React. See Firebase: Learn about and manage API keys for Firebase.
If a private key has already shipped
Assume a private credential included in a distributed client may have been copied. Revoke or rotate it with the provider, then remove it from the client and move provider calls behind a protected backend. Review usage for unexpected activity and keep the replacement out of client code, source control, and logs. If the key was committed to a repository, deleting the visible file alone does not undo its exposure.
