Use a properly fitted waterproof laptop sleeve inside the backpack, place it in a padded compartment, and add an outer rain cover when weather calls for it. These layers reduce the chance of water reaching the laptop, but they do not make a fabric backpack—or the computer—waterproof. If liquid reaches the laptop, disconnect power and shut it down immediately.
Build protection in layers
Keep the laptop in a separate sleeve, even if the backpack already has a padded laptop compartment. ASUS says a sleeve can provide an additional layer, while warning that bags may keep out only a limited amount of water. A dedicated compartment and padding help cushion and secure the device; they are not waterproofing.
Choose a sleeve that fits the laptop and closes fully. Check its product description for an explicit statement about water protection rather than assuming that padding or water-resistant-looking fabric will keep out rain or spills. Put the sleeved laptop in the backpack’s dedicated compartment, with enough room that the bag does not press hard against it.

For rain, add a backpack rain cover or another outer weather barrier. Treat it as an extra layer, not a guarantee: water may still enter, and the manufacturer guidance reviewed here does not establish performance for any particular cover. Keep using the inner laptop sleeve as a separate barrier.

Pack and carry it safely
- Before packing: Fully power down the laptop. ASUS and Dell recommend powering down before packing or transporting a computer.
- Protect against pressure: Put the device in its fitted sleeve, then in the padded laptop compartment. Avoid overpacking the bag or placing heavy items where they can press against the laptop.
- Separate other liquids: Keep bottles and containers sealed and apart from the laptop. A sleeve is not a substitute for preventing a bottle leak inside the bag.
- When rain is expected: Fit the outer rain cover or use another weather barrier, while keeping the sleeved laptop inside the backpack.
- On arrival: Check the outside of the bag and the sleeve before taking out the laptop. If either is wet, keep the computer powered off until it is dry, and follow the device maker’s model-specific instructions.
Choose the right sleeve and backpack
Compare sleeves by laptop fit, closure, and the water protection the maker actually states. Compare backpacks by the fit of the dedicated compartment, the padding—including at the bottom—and any stated weather protection. A rain cover can add an outside layer, but it does not replace a sleeve.
Manufacturer guidance does not establish comparable test results for specific sleeves or rain covers, so there is no supported basis here for ranking named products or calling one proven. Huawei Support UK states, “HUAWEI laptops are not waterproof.” That statement applies to Huawei laptops; do not assume another brand or model has different protection unless its manufacturer specifies it.

What to do if liquid reaches the laptop
- Disconnect the AC adapter or other connected power source and shut the laptop down immediately.
- Do not turn it on again until all liquid has dried. Lenovo gives this guidance for a liquid spill; follow the instructions for your specific model as well.
- Do not rely on a fixed waiting period or a universal drying method. Manufacturer advice can vary by model, and the guidance here does not establish a number of hours that makes restarting safe.
