Urgent: Follow evacuation orders, never enter floodwater to move equipment, and do not touch wet electrical equipment or handle it while standing in water. Keep away from downed power lines, damaged buildings and unstable slopes. A portable generator is safe to operate only outdoors, on dry and stable ground, with the clearances required by official guidance and its manual. If those conditions are not available, do not run it.

Put people ahead of equipment

Floodwater can become electrified by downed or underground power lines. Never touch electrical equipment if it is wet, and do not touch it while standing in water. Follow emergency alerts and evacuation orders; do not wade or drive through floodwater to rescue a generator or other equipment. FEMA’s flood safety guidance explains these hazards.

Floods can trigger landslides, and slides can damage homes, roads, utilities and communications. The U.S. Geological Survey warns that “Landslides are unpredictable.” Keep away from unstable ground and damaged structures, and follow local officials’ directions rather than trying to protect equipment on a potentially moving slope. See the USGS landslide guidance.

Prepare before flooding or slope movement threatens

  • Sign up for local flood and landslide alerts, and know how officials will announce evacuations.
  • Review the generator’s owner’s manual before an emergency, including its wet-weather restrictions and required operating clearances.
  • If you want to power household circuits, arrange for a qualified electrician to install appropriate transfer equipment in accordance with local requirements.
  • Move critical equipment to a higher, safer location only when it is safe to do so. Do not wait for an approaching flood or slide if moving it would put anyone at risk.

Operate a portable generator only in a safe location

Keep it outdoors and away from openings

Never operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed space. Open doors or windows do not provide enough ventilation. CPSC’s February 5, 2024 flood safety warning says to place it outdoors at least 20 feet from the home, direct exhaust away from the home and other buildings people may enter, and close openings in the exhaust path. Follow the current instructions for your model as well.

It is reusable after complete air drying. Note that repeated use will slightly reduce water absorption capacity due to material properties. Regular inspection and timely replacement ensure optimal protection.

Carbon monoxide is a further reason to treat generator placement seriously: CPSC reported in 2024 that nearly 100 U.S. consumers die in an average year from carbon-monoxide poisoning associated with portable generators. In that release, the agency estimated an 87% reduction in CO deaths for models certified to PGMA G300-2018 and a 100% estimated reduction for UL 2201-certified models. Those estimates are not a guarantee for an individual generator or operating situation; safe outdoor placement remains essential.

Do not run it on wet or unstable ground

The generator needs a dry, stable surface, with exhaust clearances maintained. Do not operate it in floodwater, where water can pool beneath it, or on ground that may be shifting or eroding. If a safe location is unavailable, shut the plan down: protecting equipment is not worth entering a hazard area or keeping a generator running in unsafe conditions.

If the manual permits operation in wet weather, CPSC describes an open, canopy-like shelter placed on a dry surface where water cannot reach, puddle or drain under the unit. A canopy is a narrow moisture measure, not an enclosure or flood barrier. It does not make unsafe exhaust placement, floodwater or unstable terrain acceptable. Keep hands dry before touching the generator. CPSC’s portable-generator safety alert also advises using outdoor-rated extension cords sized for the connected load, inspecting them for damage and keeping connections out of water.

Never connect a generator by backfeeding

Do not plug a generator into a wall receptacle, and never use a male-to-male extension cord to energize home wiring. Exposed energized prongs can cause electrocution or fire. For household circuits, use properly installed transfer equipment fitted by a qualified electrician. CPSC’s March 31, 2026 warning about male-to-male cords explains the backfeeding hazard.

What to do during a flood or landslide warning

  1. Follow local instructions. Evacuate when directed, and do not wade or drive through floodwater to reach or move equipment.
  2. Do not handle wet or energized equipment. Keep away from downed lines and flooded electrical areas.
  3. Run a generator only if every safety condition is met. It must be outdoors, at least 20 feet from the home under CPSC’s cited guidance, on dry, stable ground, and operated in accordance with its manual. If not, do not run it.
  4. Leave threatened areas. No cover, raised base or other consumer product makes a generator safe on moving ground or in floodwater.

After water or slope damage, wait for professional assessment

Return only after officials say it is safe. Flood recovery can leave downed power lines and other electrical hazards. Do not touch wet equipment or stand in water while handling it. Before using appliances in a flooded home, CPSC advises having a qualified professional or gas or electric utility evaluate the home. Gas control valves, electrical wiring, circuit breakers and fuses that were underwater should be replaced before appliances are used; drying them, visually checking them or trying them out is not a substitute for that assessment. See the CPSC flood safety warning.

A landslide may damage a building, road or utility connection. Follow local authority and utility directions, and wait for qualified assessment of slide-damaged electrical installations. There is no universal homeowner repair procedure for this kind of damage.
