To promote a YouTube livestream on social media, schedule the stream, share its event link at least 48 hours before going live, and post a clear teaser where your intended viewers already follow you. YouTube recommends that lead time; it is guidance, not a guarantee of a particular audience size. Then remind people during the event and make the public archive and highlights easy to find afterward.
Before the livestream: build a promotion plan
1. Schedule the stream and share its link early
Schedule the livestream first so you have a stable event URL to include in your posts. YouTube recommends: Share your streaming link at least 48 hours before you go live.
Treat this as a recommended lead time, not a proven formula for increasing views. YouTube’s livestream promotion guidance explains the available options.
Share the event link on the social platforms your intended audience already uses. Before posting, check whether that placement supports a clickable link. If it does not, use the platform’s available route, such as a profile or channel link, and say clearly where viewers can find the scheduled stream.

Create a short teaser or channel trailer that tells people what the livestream is about and why they might want to attend. Include the date, time, and YouTube event link in the accompanying post. Match the message to the placement: a teaser introduces the event, while a later reminder can focus on when it starts.

These are options YouTube lists for promoting a livestream, not requirements. During the livestream: remind people and capture highlights
Keep the event visible
YouTube recommends updating your channel banner with the event name, date, and time as an additional reminder. If it suits your community, invite viewers to share the event or tell interested friends. TikTok LIVE Studio gives that sharing advice for TikTok LIVE; it is not a YouTube-specific feature. Link behavior and sharing options vary by platform and placement, so check what viewers can actually tap.
Make clips while you are live
YouTube recommends making highlight clips during the stream where your format and production setup allow. A short, useful moment can give people who missed the start a reason to discover the event. Whether and how you can create a clip depends on your stream setup and the available YouTube features.
After the livestream: make the recording discoverable
Check the archive’s visibility
YouTube automatically uploads a livestream archive by default. YouTube says making public archives available can increase the reach of future streams. Check the archive after the event and set its visibility to public if you want people to find and watch it.

Choose a format that fits the viewing experience
YouTube documents mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming and advises choosing the method suited to your content; expensive equipment is not required to get started. YouTube’s streaming tips
YouTube’s Live Control Room supports simultaneous horizontal and vertical streams. The vertical version can be discovered in the Shorts feed, while YouTube says subscribers receive one go-live notification with a shared URL. The formats have different features: for example, YouTube’s comparison lists no clickable links in chat or the channel description for the vertical live feed. Review the current horizontal and vertical live-stream feature comparison before choosing a format. Vertical discovery is an option, not a promise of more viewers.
