To program a universal remote to a Roku TV, enter the code listed for your exact remote or cable/satellite provider, then test power and volume. The code and setup sequence vary by remote model, and not every universal remote can navigate Roku menus.
What to check before programming
Find your universal remote’s brand and model, or the name of the cable or satellite provider that supplied it. Use Roku’s code list and setup guidance to find the applicable code. The list includes provider codes and identifies universal remote brands whose manufacturers provide setup help.
Check the remote’s own instructions for its programming sequence. Roku’s general steps use a Setup button, but some remotes use a different sequence.

- Turn on the Roku TV.
- Enter setup mode. Press and hold Setup until the red indicator stays on. If there is no Setup button, follow the remote’s instructions; some remotes use TV + Power instead.
- Enter the listed code. Use the four- or five-digit code for your remote or provider. The indicator should blink or turn off when the code is entered.
- Test the controls. Try Power and Volume Up/Down. If they work, the remote is programmed for those functions.
- Try another listed code if needed. Repeat the setup process with another code for the same remote or provider.
What to do if the code or buttons do not work
No listed code works
- Try another code listed for your remote or provider.
- Confirm the remote is in TV mode, not Cable or AUX mode.
- Replace weak batteries and repeat the setup.
- Roku suggests trying Insignia TV codes, which often work on Roku TVs. For a Sharp-made Roku TV, try Sharp codes.
- If the problem continues, contact the cable or satellite provider or the remote’s manufacturer.
Power and volume work, but Roku menus do not
A working power or volume button does not mean the remote can control Roku menus. Roku distinguishes basic TV control—power, volume and input—from expanded control, which can add Home, directional arrows, Back and playback buttons. Check the exact remote model’s documentation to see which functions it supports; some remotes provide only basic controls.

Universal remotes and Roku voice remotes use different setup methods
A third-party universal remote uses its own programming method and code list. A compatible Roku voice remote that supports TV power and volume uses Roku’s separate on-screen setup flow, and may detect the TV settings during setup. Some TV models may not support every control. Follow Roku’s voice remote setup instructions for that procedure rather than entering a universal-remote code.
