LinkM programs a BlinkM by connecting a computer’s USB port to the BlinkM’s I²C interface. Install LinkM’s host software, connect the BlinkM with suitable power and the two I²C lines, then use BlinkMSequencer or LinkM commands to send colors or upload a script. The script is stored on the BlinkM, so it can run later without the computer attached.

What LinkM does—and what it does not do

LinkM is an open-source USB HID-to-I²C adapter intended for controlling and programming BlinkM. Its official project includes host libraries, command-line tools, BlinkMSequencer, Processing applications, firmware and bootloader code, schematics, and Linux udev guidance. BlinkMSequencer is a drum-machine-style editor for making light scripts; the project describes it as available for macOS, Windows, and Linux. See the LinkM project repository for its software and hardware resources.

A BlinkM is an RGB LED module with a microcontroller and onboard memory. Programming a color or script is different from replacing the BlinkM’s firmware: ordinary use sends commands or a stored script over I²C, while firmware replacement requires a separate AVR programming process.

What you need

  • A LinkM and BlinkM, plus a USB cable for LinkM.
  • A suitable power connection for the BlinkM and the two I²C signal connections between it and LinkM. Follow the pinout and electrical guidance in the hardware documentation rather than guessing at connector orientation.
  • A computer with LinkM host software installed or built. The repository documents linkm-tool, C and Java libraries, and BlinkMSequencer.

ThingM published BlinkM operating voltage as 3.6–5 V and maximum current as 60 mA in its 2015 documentation. Keep the supply within that voltage range and provide a connection appropriate to the module; do not treat the 60 mA maximum as a guaranteed current draw in every color or operating condition. ThingM also documented an 8000 mcd intensity and a 140-degree viewing angle in 2015. These are published product figures, not measurements of a particular setup. The ThingM BlinkM documentation describes the device and its operating characteristics.

Program a BlinkM with LinkM

  1. Install the host tools. Use the LinkM repository’s instructions for your operating system and chosen tool. BlinkMSequencer is the graphical option for composing scripts; linkm-tool and the libraries provide command-line or programmatic control.
  2. Address Linux USB permissions if needed. The LinkM project includes udev guidance. If the device is not accessible to your normal user account, apply the project’s udev rules and reconnect the LinkM; do not assume that running every programming session as root is required.
  3. Wire LinkM to BlinkM. Connect BlinkM power and ground appropriately, and connect the two I²C lines according to the documented pinout. Check the module’s supply voltage before powering it.
  4. Choose what to send. In BlinkMSequencer, create a light sequence; alternatively, use linkm-tool or one of the libraries to issue color or script commands. The exact command syntax depends on the tool and version, so use the repository’s documentation for the installed release.
  5. Upload and verify behavior. Send the script to the BlinkM, then confirm that the LED responds as intended. Once stored, the BlinkM can be disconnected from the programming interface and play its saved pattern whenever it is powered, as ThingM’s documentation explains.

What a BlinkM script can do

ThingM documents 24-bit RGB or HSB color control, fades, randomized color selection, 18 built-in scripts, and user scripts of up to 49 commands. These capabilities describe the BlinkM platform; they do not mean every third-party adapter or software package necessarily exposes the same editing interface.

ThingM and SparkFun describe support for as many as 127 BlinkM devices on a shared two-wire I²C network. That is a documented bus capacity, not a guarantee that every wiring layout, power supply, controller, or software setup will operate 127 modules reliably. Multiple devices also require appropriate I²C addressing and electrical design.

LinkM, Arduino, or a generic USB-to-I²C adapter?

Option USB-to-I²C connection Wiring and software Firmware replacement Best fit
LinkM Purpose-built USB HID-to-I²C adapter for BlinkM (LinkM project). Connect BlinkM power and I²C lines; project provides BlinkMSequencer, command-line tools, and libraries. Sequencer is described for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Separate ReflashBlinkM procedure; LinkM’s normal programming workflow is not itself firmware replacement. Direct BlinkM control and script editing, including multi-device I²C use when the bus is correctly configured.
Arduino I/O board Can serve as the interface alternative identified by ThingM; it is not the same direct USB-to-I²C adapter workflow. Requires wiring and an Arduino-based setup. ThingM identifies it as a quick-start interface choice. ArduinoISP is the documented route used by ReflashBlinkM. A practical alternative if LinkM is unavailable or an Arduino is already part of the setup.
Generic USB-to-I²C adapter Potentially, if it supports the BlinkM I²C command protocol. Verify voltage levels, electrical requirements, host software, and driver support for the specific adapter; LinkM documentation does not establish compatibility for generic adapters. Not established for generic adapters by the cited documentation. Only when its protocol and electrical compatibility with BlinkM are confirmed.

ThingM names a LinkM USB Programmer or Arduino I/O board as quick-start interface choices. SparkFun identifies BlinkM as the “BlinkM – I2C Controlled RGB LED,” SKU COM-08579, and describes it as a programmable I²C RGB LED; that product identification does not establish current stock. See SparkFun’s BlinkM product page.

Reflash BlinkM firmware separately

Use ReflashBlinkM when the task is replacing firmware, not when you simply want to change colors or upload a light script. The project’s documented process uses ArduinoISP and an Arduino wired to BlinkM through six AVRISP connections.

  1. Load the ArduinoISP sketch onto an Arduino.
  2. Wire BlinkM to the Arduino using the six AVRISP connections specified by the ReflashBlinkM documentation.
  3. Connect the Arduino to the computer by USB.
  4. Launch ReflashBlinkM, select the firmware file and serial port, then choose Reflash.

Firmware compatibility varies by BlinkM chip variant. ReflashBlinkM lists missing ArduinoISP, incorrect wiring, verification failure, and no chip detected among possible errors. If a flash fails, check the selected firmware against the chip variant, confirm all six connections and the selected serial port, and ensure ArduinoISP is loaded before trying again. Do not assume a firmware image for one variant is safe for another.

Common setup problems

  • LinkM is not detected: Check its USB connection and, on Linux, whether the project’s udev rules are installed and active.
  • BlinkM does not light or respond: Verify power is within the documented 3.6–5 V range, then recheck ground and both I²C connections against the hardware pinout.
  • Commands reach the wrong module: On a shared I²C bus, check device addresses and wiring; bus capacity alone does not resolve addressing or electrical issues.
  • Script editing works but firmware update fails: These are different workflows. Firmware replacement requires the ArduinoISP/ReflashBlinkM process and compatible firmware for the chip variant.

Current retail availability for LinkM, current release binaries, and compatibility of particular third-party USB-to-I²C adapters are not established by the cited project and product documentation. Check the project’s own instructions and the hardware documentation for the versions and parts in your setup.
