Check Tablet as well, drag the canvas handles to test an in-between width, then open the front end with Preview in new tab (Block Editor) or View site (Site Editor). For the most accurate result, inspect that rendered page in a browser and, when possible, on an actual phone.
Use WordPress’s built-in mobile canvas preview
The current unified View controls are documented for WordPress 7.1 and were updated on August 19, 2026. Older screenshots may show the controls in a different location. The workflow applies to posts, pages, templates, and the site itself.
- Open the page or post in the Block Editor, or open the relevant template or site in the Site Editor.
- Select View in the top toolbar.
- Choose Mobile to switch the editing canvas to a phone-sized width. Select Tablet and Desktop too, rather than checking only one preset.
- After choosing Tablet or Mobile, drag the canvas resize handles to test widths between the presets. The editor state and canvas update together as the width changes.
- Inspect the entire layout: header, navigation, content, images, forms, sidebars, and footer. If available, turn on Show template when you need to see page content together with its template.
The View menu is an editing aid, not a substitute for checking the rendered page. WordPress documents the controls in How to use the View feature.
Check the rendered front end separately
Block Editor
Choose Preview in new tab. This opens the front-end rendering separately from the editor canvas, so you can check the page as visitors receive it.

Site Editor
Choose View site to open the site front end. Check the saved or published result, including template parts such as the site header and footer.
WordPress.com Support puts the distinction plainly: “For the most accurate preview, view your site directly in a browser or on your mobile device.” (WordPress.com Support.)

Test widths beyond the three presets
In the front-end tab, resize the browser window or use its device/responsive view to inspect additional viewport widths. WordPress’s 7.1 testing guidance recommends checking desktop, tablet, and mobile widths this way and then checking the saved or published page (Help Test WordPress 7.1).
A real phone or tablet provides an additional practical check of the live front end. It is not a guarantee that every physical device will render identically to a browser simulation, but it can reveal touch, scrolling, font-loading, and interaction problems that are easy to miss in the editor.

Previewing is different from responsive editing
View changes the width at which you look at the canvas. Responsive styles lets you edit supported block-style values for a particular viewport.
- Confirm that the site uses a block theme and WordPress 7.1 or newer.
- Select a block and open its Settings; the styles panel shows only values that support responsive editing.
- With Responsive styles enabled, switch to Tablet or Mobile and edit the supported value. A viewport badge identifies the device state being changed.
- Return to Default or Desktop to verify that the base style still looks right.
An administrator can disable responsive-style editing; existing viewport styles continue to display according to the documentation. Not every block setting, theme, or third-party editor supports separate values. See Responsive styles for the documented scope.

Troubleshoot common mobile-preview problems
There is no Responsive styles option
The documented prerequisites are a block theme and WordPress 7.1 or later. An administrator may also have turned off responsive-style editing. The View menu’s Mobile preview does not depend on having Responsive styles.
The editor canvas and live page do not match
Open Preview in new tab or View site, then inspect the current saved or published page in the browser. Check the complete template, not only the content area, and use a real device when feasible.

A developer suggests wp_is_mobile() for responsive layout
Do not use it as a viewport-width detector. The function classifies requests from the browser’s user-agent string, includes tablets in its mobile classification, and is not intended to detect screen width (WordPress Developer Resources: wp_is_mobile()). Responsive layout testing should use viewport widths and front-end rendering instead.
Someone refers to a separate “mobile version” of the site
WordPress.com Support says WordPress sites use responsive design and do not provide a separate mobile version to edit (Edit the mobile version of a WordPress site). A theme or plugin can add its own controls or behavior, so investigate those separately if the rendered page has custom mobile logic.

A practical verification sequence
- Use View > Mobile in the editor.
- Check Tablet and at least one intermediate width with the resize handles.
- Review header, navigation, content, and footer; enable Show template when you need the full template context.
- Open the front end with Preview in new tab or View site.
- Resize the browser or use device/responsive view to test more widths.
- Open the page on an available phone or tablet and test scrolling, menus, forms, links, and media.
- If a mobile-only design change is required, use Responsive styles only where the selected block exposes that capability, then recheck the default state.
