To preview a Facebook ad before it runs, open the ad in Meta Ads Manager, work at the ad level, and use the available preview control—especially Advanced Preview when it is offered. Inspect every selected placement for cropping, text or headline cutoffs, and the correct image or video. Placement choices are made at the ad-set level, so verify those settings before judging the ad rendering. Meta’s exact labels and device-preview options vary by campaign type, account and format.

Preview a Facebook ad in Meta Ads Manager

The reliable workflow is to configure the campaign first, confirm placements at the ad-set level, then inspect the creative at the ad level. Do not assume that one preview represents every possible impression: each placement can use a different aspect ratio, crop or asset treatment.

  1. Open Ads Manager and select the campaign. Go to the campaign containing the draft ad. If you have several ads, identify the exact draft you intend to publish.
  2. Move to the Ad level. Creative choices and the ad-level preview controls appear when you edit an individual ad, rather than the campaign or ad set.
  3. Open the preview control shown for that ad. Depending on the objective, format and account, the control may appear as a preview panel, a preview icon or an Advanced Preview option. Meta describes Advanced Preview as a way to see how an ad may appear and to catch text or headline cutoffs.
  4. Cycle through the available placements. Select each placement representation that Ads Manager exposes and check the rendering, not just the editing canvas. If a placement is absent, first confirm that it is enabled in the ad set.
  5. Check the destination and interaction. Verify the displayed page name, call-to-action, link, thumbnail and any carousel cards or video controls. A preview confirms the composition; it does not guarantee that every live impression will use the same device, inventory or surrounding interface.
  6. Return to the ad editor and correct problems. Save the revised copy or asset, reopen the preview and inspect the affected placements again before publishing.

Where placement settings live

Meta’s Reels guidance places placement selection in the Placements section of the ad set. You can use Advantage+ placements or select placements manually. This distinction matters because the ad-level preview can only show placements allowed by the ad set.

Approach How placement choice works What to verify in preview
Advantage+ placements Meta can distribute the ad across a range of eligible placements. Review every placement preview that Ads Manager provides and confirm the creative remains legible in each one.
Manual placements You select eligible placements with checkboxes in the ad-set Placements section. Preview the placements you selected, and remove any where the crop, text or format is unsuitable.

These choices are described in Meta’s “Instagram & Facebook Reels: Create Short Video Ads” guide: https://www.facebook.com/business/ads/facebook-instagram-reels-ads.

What to check in each ad preview

Placement and crop

Look at the whole frame, not only the center. Feed, Stories and Reels can use different proportions, so a subject near an edge, a product label or a logo may be cropped. Check the first frame of a video and the thumbnail shown before playback. If an important object disappears, create a placement-specific asset or disable that placement.

Text and headline fit

Read the primary text, headline and description exactly as they appear in the preview. Confirm that the first lines communicate the offer and that essential qualifiers are not hidden behind a truncation control. Advanced Preview is specifically useful for spotting text and headline cutoffs. Keep legally or commercially important wording in the visible portion rather than relying on a reader to expand it.

Creative format

Confirm that the intended image, video, carousel card or collection asset is being used. Check the thumbnail, aspect ratio, captions, audio indicator and call-to-action. Meta’s Reels guidance also discusses adding creative at the ad level and customizing assets for placements; an asset that looks correct in one placement may need a different version in another.

Brand and destination details

Check the Page or account identity, profile image, display URL, destination URL and call-to-action label. Follow the link in a separate tab to verify that it loads the expected landing page. A preview cannot reveal every behavior after a click, such as a regional redirect or a page that requires authentication.

Overlay and safe-area checks

For vertical placements, inspect the top and bottom regions where interface controls or captions can cover content. Keep faces, prices, disclaimers and buttons away from the edges. For videos, watch enough of the opening seconds to ensure the message is understandable with sound off and that text does not enter or leave the frame too quickly.

Device previews: what Meta documents and what it does not

Meta documents a Preview on device option for a test ad on iOS for Facebook Feed in its Horizon OS app-ad guidance. That documentation is specific to the Horizon OS app-ad context; it is not a promise that every standard Facebook campaign, account or format exposes the same option. If you do not see a device-preview control, use the placement previews available in your account instead of treating its absence as an error.

Meta’s documented guidance is here: https://developers.meta.com/horizon/resources/optimize-ad-campaign/. Even when a device preview is available, regard it as an inspection aid rather than a perfect reproduction of every live impression.

A practical pre-publish checklist

  • The preview is for the correct draft ad, Page and campaign.
  • Every intended placement is enabled at the ad-set level and has been inspected at the ad level.
  • The image or video is the final version, with no accidental old asset or wrong carousel card.
  • Primary text, headline, description, price, dates and disclaimers remain readable where they first appear.
  • The crop keeps the product, person or focal point visible in each placement.
  • Video starts with a clear message, works without sound and uses readable captions.
  • The call-to-action, display URL and destination link are correct.
  • Brand identity and profile image are correct.
  • No preview shows a broken thumbnail, blank area or loading failure.
  • You have checked the preview again after the last edit.

Or skip the browser setup

If you have a public Facebook ad preview or share URL, ScreenshotNeo can render that URL through a single request. It is useful when you need a repeatable image for a review ticket, approval record or automated check. For a private Ads Manager page, use only credentials and cookies that you are authorized to provide; a public preview URL is simpler and safer for automation.

See the complete parameter list in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The following examples use Facebook’s public homepage as a runnable target; replace that URL with your authorized public preview URL.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.facebook.com/ -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://www.facebook.com/"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://www.facebook.com/' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the result in the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

For an authenticated workflow, its options include custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization. Other useful controls for ad-review images include a chosen viewport or device preset, retina scale, full-page capture, a CSS selector for one element, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture, hide selectors, waits for a selector or network idle, blocked requests or resource types, timezone and geolocation, image resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. It also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Every feature is included on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans are Starter ($5 for 3,000), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000) and Business ($249 for 1,000,000). Yearly billing gives two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start with 1,000 screenshots a month and no card.

Troubleshooting preview problems

The preview button or Advanced Preview is missing

Confirm that you are editing the individual ad, not the campaign or ad set. Then check the campaign objective, creative format and account permissions. Meta does not document one universal set of labels for every standard Facebook campaign, so do not force a click path from another account onto yours.

A placement is not available in the preview

Open the ad set’s Placements section. With manual placements, the placement may simply be unchecked. With Advantage+ placements, Ads Manager decides which eligible placements can be used. Some formats also have placement-specific eligibility rules; choose a compatible asset or remove the unsuitable placement.

Text is cut off

Use Advanced Preview when available, then shorten the opening lines and headline, move essential details earlier and inspect each placement again. Do not rely on a single feed preview to judge a vertical placement.

The device-preview option is unavailable

The documented iOS Facebook Feed device option belongs to Meta’s Horizon OS app-ad guidance. Its absence in another campaign is not, by itself, a platform failure. Use the standard placement previews and, where appropriate, a controlled test with your own device after publishing.

The live ad looks different from the preview

A preview is an expected rendering, not a guarantee of every live impression. Different devices, placements, interface overlays, audience context and delivery conditions can change what a person sees. Save the preview for approval, but monitor the first delivered impressions and pause the ad if a material defect appears.

ScreenshotNeo returns an authentication or access error

Check that the access key is valid, the URL is correctly encoded and the target is reachable with the supplied headers or cookies. Never paste an access key into a public repository. For a page behind a login, use an authorized session or a public share URL; do not attempt to bypass a bot check or access control.

The ScreenshotNeo image is blank or times out

Inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed in the response, confirm that the target URL works in a normal browser, and increase page waits when the page is slow or JavaScript-rendered. Blank pages, failed loads and timeouts are not billed. If a consent dialog or chat widget obscures the page, leave the corresponding cleanup options enabled.

How to use the preview in an approval process

Keep the final creative, placement settings and a dated preview image together. Ask reviewers to comment on a specific placement rather than on “the ad” generally. When copy, media, destination or placement settings change, generate a new preview and replace the old approval artifact. This prevents a correct review of an earlier draft from being mistaken for approval of the version that will actually run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I preview an ad without publishing it?

Yes. A draft ad can be inspected with the preview controls in Ads Manager before publication. The available views depend on the campaign, account and format.

Does one Facebook preview cover Instagram, Reels and Feed?

No. Review each placement representation that your ad set allows. Different placements can crop or format the same creative differently.

Is Meta’s Preview on device available for every advertiser?

Meta’s documented option is for a test ad on iOS for Facebook Feed in its Horizon OS app-ad context. It should not be treated as a universal control for standard campaigns.

Can ScreenshotNeo capture a private Ads Manager draft automatically?

Only when the request has an authorized, working session through supported headers or cookies. A public preview or share URL is usually the simplest target; ScreenshotNeo does not replace Meta permissions.
