To preview a social card, publish the page’s Open Graph metadata at its final public URL, enter that URL in the target network’s inspection tool, and compare the returned title, description, and image with your intended design. If the result is stale, use the network’s refresh process and test a new post. This workflow catches incorrect tags, inaccessible images, and cache problems before a campaign or launch.
What a social card actually previews
A social card is assembled by a platform crawler when someone shares a URL. The crawler requests the page, reads metadata, fetches the referenced image, and applies that network’s own layout, cropping, cache, and fallback rules. The same URL can therefore look different on different services.
Open Graph (OG) tags are the common control surface:
og:titlesupplies the headline.og:descriptionsupplies supporting text.og:imageidentifies the image URL.og:urlidentifies the canonical shared URL where the platform supports it.
These tags describe the intended card; they do not force every platform to display identical text, dimensions, or crops. Always inspect the actual network where the link will be posted.

Set complete, crawler-readable metadata
A minimal HTML head
Place the tags in the document’s <head>, not in body content generated only after a browser-side script runs. Use absolute HTTPS URLs for both the page and image.

<meta property="og:type" content="article">Keep one intentional set of OG values per page. If a framework emits defaults as well as your page-specific tags, verify which value appears first and remove duplicates. The title and description should match the page’s subject, while the image should be designed for a small preview as well as a large share dialog.
Make the image retrievable
- Serve the image from a public URL that does not require a login, signed session, or browser-only token.
- Return a successful response to ordinary crawler requests; do not block the image directory with access rules intended for private assets.
- Use a stable URL while testing. Changing filenames or query strings can make a platform treat each version as a different resource.
- Check that the response has a real image content type and that redirects lead to the final image rather than an HTML error page.
LinkedIn’s sharing guidance specifies a maximum image file size of 5 MB, minimum dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a recommended 1.91:1 aspect ratio for its sharing module. Those are LinkedIn requirements, not universal rules: other networks may crop, resize, or reject images differently.
A repeatable preview-and-test workflow
1. Inspect the source before opening a debugger
- Open the exact public URL in a browser without an administrator session.
- View the page source (or the server-rendered HTML) and search for
og:title,og:description,og:image, andog:url. - Copy the image URL into a private browser window. Confirm it loads without cookies, authentication, or a preceding consent screen.
- Check the image’s pixel dimensions and file size. For LinkedIn, confirm at least 1200 × 627 pixels, no more than 5 MB, and preferably a 1.91:1 ratio.
Checking source first separates a metadata mistake from a platform-cache problem. If the tags are wrong in the source, an inspector cannot fix them.

2. Use the target platform’s own inspector
For LinkedIn, open LinkedIn’s Post Inspector, enter the exact URL, and submit it. The result shows the title, description, and image LinkedIn can retrieve. Compare each field with the intended card, including punctuation, capitalization, and the image crop.
Platform-specific inspection is the authoritative test for that platform’s interpretation. A third-party multi-platform preview can be useful for a quick visual comparison, but it may not reproduce each network’s crawler, cache, fallback selection, or current layout. Use the target network’s tool before publishing.
3. Refresh a stale result
If the inspector shows an older title or image, first verify that your public source now contains the new tags. Then run the platform’s refresh procedure and inspect again. LinkedIn describes Post Inspector as a tool to refresh a URL preview for new posts. Its refresh does not rewrite a preview already stored in an existing post; test a new post to see the refreshed card.
LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance advises allowing up to 48 hours after the URL was last shared or its tags were updated before retrying. That is LinkedIn-specific guidance, not a general promise for every service.

4. Test the real sharing path
- Copy the canonical URL, not a staging hostname or an internal preview link.
- Start a new post in the target network and paste the URL.
- Wait for the preview to finish loading before publishing.
- Check the card on a desktop and a narrow mobile viewport if the network provides both compositions.
- Record the URL, timestamp, metadata values, and result so a later cache refresh can be distinguished from an accidental edit.
Diagnose wrong, missing, or stale cards
The title or description is wrong
- Cause: a typo, duplicate OG tags, or a template default is being emitted.
- Fix: inspect server-rendered source, remove duplicates, deploy the corrected page, then run the platform inspector again.
- Also check: whether the platform is falling back to the HTML
<title>or visible page text because it could not read your OG tags.
The image is missing
- Cause: the image URL is private, blocked, malformed, too large, or returns an error.
- Fix: open the exact image URL in a logged-out window, confirm a successful image response, remove crawler blocks for that asset, and verify dimensions and file size.
- LinkedIn case: its guidance says an inaccessible or protected image location can prevent retrieval, even when the dimensions comply.
The old image remains after an update
- Cause: the network is serving a cached fetch.
- Fix: confirm the new source, use the network’s refresh tool, wait according to its guidance, and test a new post. On LinkedIn, an inspector refresh affects new posts, not existing ones.
The card works in one network but not another
That is normal when platforms apply different image limits, cache policies, fallbacks, or crawler access rules. Keep the OG values standards-based, then inspect each important destination independently. Do not treat a successful LinkedIn preview as proof that every other network will render the same card.
The inspector cannot fetch the page
Confirm that DNS and TLS work publicly, the URL does not redirect to a login page, and a firewall or bot-management rule is not challenging crawlers. Check the final URL after redirects and make sure your server returns the page’s HTML to an unauthenticated request.
Design and validation checklist
- Use a descriptive, page-specific
og:title,og:description,og:image, andog:url. - Use one canonical URL and absolute HTTPS asset URLs.
- Keep important text away from edges where a network may crop it.
- Validate the source after every template or CMS change.
- Open the image without a session and verify dimensions, bytes, and content type.
- Inspect every network that matters to your audience.
- After changes, refresh the platform cache and test a new post rather than relying on an old published post.
- For LinkedIn, use at least 1200 × 627 pixels, stay under 5 MB, and target 1.91:1.

Browser inspection versus API capture
Manual inspection is best when you need the platform’s exact card interpretation and cache controls. API capture is useful for repeatable visual regression checks, multiple viewports, scheduled audits, and pages that require consistent cleanup before a screenshot. Neither replaces the target network’s metadata inspector: an image of your page cannot prove what a social crawler will select.
Make repeated checks efficient
- Use a stable test URL and capture only after deployment completes.
- Choose a cache TTL deliberately: caching reduces repeated rendering, while a short TTL helps during active design changes.
- Use selector captures for a card component instead of full-page images when the question is purely visual.
- Use asynchronous jobs or bulk capture for many URLs, and keep the returned verdict and billing headers with your test record.
- Wait for a meaningful selector or network idle when the card is rendered after data loads; an arbitrary short delay can capture a blank state.
For a reliable release check, combine source validation, a platform inspector result, and an automated screenshot at the viewport your team cares about.
