To change the sound your Nest Doorbell plays for visitors, open the doorbell in Google Home, go to its settings, and choose an available doorbell theme or sound. Google’s instructions explain how to change a theme or sound, but do not document a dedicated preview button. If your app does not show a preview control, apply the sound and test the doorbell.

Change the visitor-facing sound in Google Home

  1. Open the Google Home app and select your Nest Doorbell.

  2. Open the doorbell’s settings and look for the doorbell theme or sound controls. Choose an available option and follow the prompts shown in the app.

  3. If a preview control appears on your device, use it to audition the sound. Google’s published doorbell settings instructions say you can change the theme or set a different chime sound, but do not describe a preview button. When no preview is offered, test the doorbell after applying the sound.

Visitor-facing tone or theme

This is the sound the doorbell plays when someone presses it. Some seasonal themes are offered around holidays. They can also play through enabled visitor announcements on speakers or displays, and Google says they revert to the default after the holiday.

Indoor chime

The indoor chime is the sound heard inside your home, and it has separate controls from the visitor-facing theme. In Google Home, you can turn the indoor chime on or off. A digital-chime duration setting is available only for a wired Nest Doorbell connected to the home’s doorbell system; battery-powered doorbells cannot use a digital chime. See Google’s audio settings instructions for the available chime controls.

Quiet Time

Quiet Time temporarily turns off the indoor chime and visitor announcements. The app can still notify household members that someone is at the door. To keep the indoor chime off beyond the Quiet Time interval, switch it off in the doorbell’s settings instead.

If the indoor chime does not ring

Check the indoor chime setting first, then make sure Quiet Time is not active. If those settings are correct, check the power connection on a wired installation or the battery charge on a battery-powered model, and check Wi-Fi as appropriate. Google’s chime troubleshooting guide covers the checks for different installations.
