To preview a WordPress page or post, open it in the editor, select View > Preview in new tab, then inspect the front end at desktop, tablet and mobile widths. Save any later edits and refresh the preview tab to see them. For theme or plugin changes that could affect the whole site, use a staging environment instead: an editor preview is not a clone of your website.
Preview a WordPress post or page
The editor preview lets you see how an individual piece of content will look outside the editing canvas, with the active theme’s formatting applied. It is useful both for an unpublished draft and for reviewing proposed edits to a published page.
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Posts or Pages, then edit the item you want to check.
- In the editor toolbar, open View.
- Select Preview in new tab. WordPress opens the front-end rendering in a separate browser tab.
- Check the available desktop, tablet and mobile canvas presets. Where the editor allows it, resize the canvas manually to inspect widths between those presets.
- If you change the content after opening the preview, save the changes and refresh the preview tab.
In WordPress.com’s documented workflow, use Save draft for draft content or Save for published content before refreshing. The precise save controls may vary by editor or installation; follow the status and save controls shown in your dashboard.
What to check in the preview
Do more than confirm that the text appears. A page can look correct in the editor and still have problems in its front-end layout, especially at narrower widths or where the theme styles content differently.

- Content and hierarchy: Check the title, headings, links, lists, images, captions and any embedded content. Look for missing blocks, unintended spacing or text that is difficult to scan.
- Desktop layout: Check that the main content and sidebar, if present, have sensible proportions and that images do not overflow their containers.
- Tablet and mobile widths: Look for clipped text, cramped buttons, awkward line breaks, horizontal scrolling and images that become too large or too small. Use an intermediate canvas width where available; preset labels are useful checks, not a guarantee for every device.
- Theme styling: Confirm that colors, typography, spacing and link treatments are legible in the front-end view. The active theme controls how post and page content is displayed.
- Navigation and actions: Follow important links and test buttons or forms that are part of the page. A visual preview alone does not prove that an external destination or interactive service works correctly.
These checks are a practical review checklist, not a claim that the preview reproduces every visitor’s browser, device or logged-in state exactly.
Preview a block theme or broader site design
For site-wide layouts and templates, use the Site Editor rather than treating one post preview as a preview of the whole design. The Site Editor requires an active block theme.
- In the dashboard, open Appearance > Editor.
- Use the editor’s preview controls to inspect the template or site design you are changing. View site opens the front end in a new tab.
- Before saving, review the list of changes WordPress presents.
- Pay particular attention to shared template parts such as the header and footer. A change to one of these may affect every page that uses that part.
A post or page preview focuses on that content item. A template change can have a much wider scope, so check more than the page you happened to be editing before you commit the change.

Check what visitors can see
A draft is unpublished; the classic editor documentation describes a Preview button for viewing a post before publication. For a published page, previewing proposed edits lets you review the result before saving those edits. These are different situations: an editor preview is for reviewing content, not a public announcement that the draft is live.
For a practical check of the published site as a visitor, open it in a separate browser window where you are logged out. WordPress.com’s support workflow specifically recommends this for checking what visitors see. Do not assume that a draft preview and a logged-out visitor view show the same thing.
When to use staging instead of preview
Use staging when the change or investigation is broader than a single content item—for example, when testing theme or plugin changes or troubleshooting a conflict. A staging site is a separate copy for experiments; an editor preview is not a clone of the whole website.

WordPress.com describes its staging site as a clone decoupled from production and documents staging for its Business and Commerce plans. Those eligibility details apply to WordPress.com, not automatically to other WordPress hosts. Check your host’s current documentation and plan details before relying on a staging feature.
Some WordPress.com staging workflows let you sync selected changes from staging to production. Review exactly what will be copied or overwritten before syncing. A sync is a deployment decision, not simply another way to refresh a preview.
A narrower option for feedback on local work
WordPress Studio’s developer guide describes temporary hosted preview sites for sharing local work with a client or team. They are intended for early feedback for up to seven days; permanent access requires a hosting plan. The guide also states a limit of up to ten preview sites per account. These are WordPress Studio service limits, not general WordPress limits, and they are not substitutes for a host’s staging environment when you need to test a production-like site.

Choose the right kind of preview

Troubleshooting preview problems
The preview does not show my latest edits
Save the latest changes, then refresh the preview tab. For WordPress.com’s documented workflow, save a draft with Save draft or a published item with Save before refreshing. If you have multiple preview tabs open, make sure you refresh the one for the item you just edited.
I cannot find the preview control
Open the item in its editor and look for View in the editor toolbar. The classic editor documentation describes a Preview button, so the control may differ by editor. If you are editing the site design rather than a post or page, open Appearance > Editor; the Site Editor requires an active block theme.
The preview looks different from the editing canvas
That difference is expected: the separate front-end view applies the active theme’s presentation to the content. Check the front end at the relevant widths and review theme or template changes separately. If the mismatch involves a shared header, footer or template, inspect the Site Editor changes rather than assuming the individual post preview captures their full scope.

A post preview does not isolate broader changes. Check whether your host provides a staging environment, and verify its plan eligibility and copying or sync procedure. If using WordPress.com staging, review the changes that will be copied or overwritten before syncing to production.
I need to know what a logged-out visitor sees
Open the published site in a separate browser window while logged out. Do not use a draft preview as a substitute for checking the public view of a published page.
