These methods expose different amounts of metadata—usually a title, description, domain, image, or rendered view—so choose one based on where the link is and how much detail you need.
A preview is not proof that a destination is safe or current. Check the spelling of the domain, look for HTTPS, and pay attention to browser or Safe Browsing warnings before you visit.
Choose the right kind of preview
The best method depends on where you found the link and whether you need text metadata or a visual rendering.

Preview a link from search results
- Copy the domain, page title, or complete URL. For a suspicious link, copy it instead of clicking it.
- Paste it into a search engine. Search the exact URL or a distinctive part of the title.
- Inspect the result before selecting it. Compare the visible domain with the spelling you expect, read the text snippet, and check whether the thumbnail matches the claimed site.
- Use the result only as a relevance check. Search engines use content previews, including text snippets and other media, to help people decide whether a result is relevant. The result may not represent the page currently served.
A result for a newly changed page can lag behind the destination, while a blocked or poorly indexed page may show little or no useful information. A missing result is not a safety verdict.

Preview a URL in Slack or another chat app
- Paste the URL into a draft or message. Do not open the link itself.
- Wait for the unfurl card. Slack and similar tools may show the page title, description, domain, or image after their servers retrieve metadata.
- Read the card without selecting it. If the card is wrong or unwanted, use the app’s controls to remove or disable the preview when available.
- Remember the trust boundary. A work-object preview can include external material that the collaboration platform has not validated or endorsed.
Unfurls are convenient when the URL is already in a conversation, but they are not an isolated security view. The app still has to request information from the destination to build the card.
Use a URL-preview API in software
An API is the practical choice when your product must display a link card before a user follows a link. Microsoft’s URL Preview reference describes an endpoint that returns preview results and requires content-owner requests to disable previews to be honored.
Typical application flow
- Accept and validate the submitted URL. Require an absolute HTTP or HTTPS URL and reject schemes your application does not support.
- Send the URL to the preview provider. Keep the request server-side so credentials and provider details are not exposed in browser code.
- Read the returned metadata. Use the title, description, and image only for the card fields your interface needs.
- Render a clearly labeled preview. Keep the destination domain visible so users can compare it with the link they intended to share.
- Respect publisher controls. If an owner asks that previews be disabled, remove or suppress the preview rather than trying another fetch route.
- Cache conservatively. Metadata can change, so set an expiration appropriate to your application and provide a way to refresh it.
Protect your preview endpoint
- Rate-limit requests so a public preview form cannot be abused to generate unlimited fetches.
- Record the requested hostname and result status for troubleshooting, while avoiding unnecessary storage of page contents.
- Set a short fetch timeout and return a neutral “preview unavailable” state when the provider cannot retrieve the page.
- Do not treat a successful metadata response as a security clearance. Continue to display browser warnings and your own domain checks.
Try a hover-preview extension
- Find the extension in your browser’s current extension store. Community listings change, so verify the publisher, update date, and supported browser.
- Review permissions before installing. A tool that reads links or page content may request broad access; install only when that access is necessary for your use.
- Hover over a link after installation. The extension may show a floating window or preview pane without opening a new tab.
- Remove it if maintenance stops. An unmaintained extension can break as browser policies and website markup change.
Hover previews are optional conveniences, not a universal browser feature. They are useful for quickly screening many links, but they add another party that may read or fetch the URLs on a page.

Safety checks before you open anything
- Verify the domain spelling. Look for substitutions, extra words, or a different top-level domain.
- Check HTTPS. HTTPS encrypts the connection, but encryption alone does not prove that the site operator is trustworthy.
- Heed browser warnings. Google Safe Browsing explains that Chrome and other browsers warn users before dangerous sites or harmful downloads.
- Treat previews as partial metadata. A snippet, unfurl, or thumbnail can be stale, truncated, or misleading.
- Consider who fetched the URL. Search engines, chat platforms, extensions, and preview APIs may all receive the address and retrieve content from it.
For a suspicious destination, do not bypass a warning just because a preview looked normal. A preview is a convenience layer, not a sandbox or a replacement for a browser security verdict.

The search result has no snippet
The page may not be indexed, may block previews, or may expose little extractable text. Try searching the domain and title separately, then rely on domain spelling and HTTPS checks rather than assuming the result is unsafe or safe.
The chat card is wrong or missing
Metadata may be cached, unavailable, or disabled by the publisher. Remove and repost the URL only if your workspace permits it; otherwise treat the missing card as “no preview,” not as evidence about the destination.

The hover tool opens a blank pane
The extension may be outdated, the page may require scripts or authentication, or the destination may block automated requests. Check permissions and maintenance status, then uninstall the extension if it no longer receives updates.
The screenshot is blank or times out

The page looks different from what a visitor sees
Set the intended viewport or device preset, retina scale, timezone, geolocation, cookies, user agent, and Authorization header. Dynamic pages may also need a selector wait, a delay, or network-idle waiting.
Which approach should you use?
- Just checking relevance: search the URL and read the title, snippet, domain, and thumbnail.
- Sharing a link in a team: paste it into the chat app and inspect the unfurl without selecting it.
- Building link cards: use a URL-preview API, honor publisher opt-outs, and apply rate limits and timeouts.
- Scanning links while browsing: use a carefully reviewed hover extension.
