The normal way to preview a website in Visual Studio is to run the project, not to open a static design pane. Select the https launch profile (or another configured profile), press F5 to debug or Ctrl+F5 to run without debugging, and Visual Studio opens the rendered application in a browser. The browser displays the site served by your running app, so server-side code, routes, data, JavaScript and CSS are tested together.

Preview an ASP.NET Core website in Visual Studio
- Open the project. Open the
.slnsolution or the web project’s.csprojfile in Visual Studio. - Choose a launch profile. In the toolbar’s run-target dropdown, select https when it is available. The profile supplies the local URL, environment and browser-launch behavior.
- Start the app. Press F5 (Start Debugging) or Ctrl+F5 (Start Without Debugging). Visual Studio builds the project, starts the web server and opens the local address in a browser. Microsoft describes the rendered result this way: “The Index.cshtml file corresponds with your Home page in the web app, which runs in a web browser.”
- Use the site. Follow links, submit forms and inspect the rendered pages at the local URL. Edit a page or stylesheet, save it, then refresh. Depending on the edit and project configuration, Hot Reload may apply the change; otherwise refresh or restart the app.
- Stop the preview. Press Shift+F5 to stop debugging. A Ctrl+F5 session can be stopped with the Stop button or by closing the running session.

On first HTTPS use, Visual Studio may ask you to trust the ASP.NET Core development certificate; accept it only when you recognize the prompt and follow Microsoft’s current certificate guidance if trust errors remain.
Choose a browser or open several browsers
Select the browser Visual Studio launches
Use the browser/debug-target dropdown beside the Start button. The choices depend on installed browsers and the project’s launch-profile configuration. Microsoft Edge documentation shows Visual Studio launching an ASP.NET Core app in an Edge preview channel; that is simply a browser target—the application still has to be running locally.

Use Browse With for cross-browser checks
When available, right-click the web project and choose Browse With…. Select one or more installed browsers, choose a default if needed, and open the project. This is useful for comparing layout, cookies and JavaScript behavior without changing the application.

Refresh connected browsers with Browser Link and Hot Reload
Browser Link creates a development communication channel between Visual Studio and connected browsers. Where the project supports it, you can refresh multiple browsers together, test different screen sizes, map selected UI elements to source markup and assist with browser testing. CSS Hot Reload can refresh connected browsers after CSS changes.

These tools are different from launching the app: the launch profile starts the server and opens a page; Browser Link coordinates refresh and diagnostics after a browser is connected. Hot Reload is edit-dependent. Microsoft’s Browser Link guidance recommends Hot Reload rather than runtime compilation for observing Razor (.cshtml) changes, and neither feature guarantees that every code or configuration edit appears without a restart.

ASP.NET Core
For ASP.NET Core, the supported baseline preview is the running app in a browser (F5 or Ctrl+F5), optionally assisted by Hot Reload and Browser Link. There is not a universal design canvas that renders every ASP.NET Core project while you edit.
ASP.NET Web Forms
Web Live Preview is a separate Visual Studio experience described for Web Forms in Visual Studio 2022. Microsoft’s Visual Studio Toolbox episode explains that Web Forms changes can be reflected live in the running app. It should not be treated as the general ASP.NET Core preview path. Visual Studio versus Visual Studio Code
A common search result says “I installed Live Preview but there is no live preview option.” The Microsoft Q&A response explains that the commonly named Live Preview extension is for Visual Studio Code, while Visual Studio IDE has the separate Web Live Preview feature for Web Forms. Confirm which editor and project type you are using before installing an extension; use the documentation for your exact Visual Studio release rather than assuming the controls are interchangeable. Troubleshoot a missing or broken preview
The browser does not open
- Confirm a web project is selected as the startup project.
- Check the toolbar launch target and the profile’s URL.
- Open the project’s debug/launch settings and verify Launch browser is enabled. Microsoft’s debugger documentation describes these settings.
- Copy the displayed local URL and paste it into a browser manually. If it works, the app is running and only automatic launching is misconfigured.
The HTTPS certificate prompt or error appears
ASP.NET Core development HTTPS can require a certificate-trust prompt. Accept the expected Visual Studio prompt, then consult the current Microsoft certificate instructions for persistent trust or browser errors. Do not replace a certificate problem by silently switching to production credentials.

Edits are not visible
- Save the file and hard-refresh the browser.
- Check whether Hot Reload reports that the edit is supported.
- Restart with F5 or Ctrl+F5 if the edit changes server startup, routing, configuration, generated code or another unsupported area.
- For Razor files, use the Hot Reload workflow recommended in the Browser Link documentation rather than assuming runtime compilation is active.
There is no “Live Preview” command
Identify the editor (Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code), project type (ASP.NET Core or Web Forms) and Visual Studio version. A VS Code extension will not add the Visual Studio IDE’s Web Forms Web Live Preview command, and Web Live Preview is not the ordinary ASP.NET Core launch workflow.

A page is blank or a route returns an error
- Read the Visual Studio Output and Debug consoles for build, startup and exception messages.
- Verify the requested path matches the app’s routing and that required services, database settings and environment variables are available in the selected profile.
- Check whether the page depends on an external service that is unavailable from your development machine.

Can I preview a website without debugging it?
Yes. Press Ctrl+F5 or choose Start Without Debugging. Visual Studio runs the site and opens its local URL without attaching the debugger.
Does Visual Studio preview a static HTML file?
The F5 workflow is intended for a configured web project. For a static file, open the file in a browser or use a local static server; the ASP.NET Core launch profile is not required.
Why does my local URL work only while Visual Studio is open?
The development server is normally owned by the running Visual Studio session. Stop the session and the local endpoint stops serving requests.
