To stop a WooCommerce product from being ordered after its stock reaches zero, enable stock management globally and on the product, enter the correct quantity, and set Allow backorders to Do not allow. For variable products, check stock settings on the parent product or each variation, depending on how inventory is counted. The Hold Stock setting is a separate reservation for eligible unpaid orders; hiding an unavailable product is only a catalog-display choice.
1. Enable stock management in WooCommerce
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to WooCommerce → Settings → Products → Inventory.
- Enable the global stock-management option and save the settings.
With stock management enabled, WooCommerce can track quantities and reduce stock as orders are made. The global setting does not, by itself, confirm that each product has stock tracking enabled or has an accurate quantity. See WooCommerce’s Products Settings documentation.
2. Configure each product that must stop at zero
- In WordPress, open Products and edit the product.
- In the product’s inventory settings, enable stock management for that product.
- Enter the quantity actually available to sell.
- Set Allow backorders to Do not allow if customers must not order once the quantity reaches zero.
- Save or update the product.
Backorders are orders accepted after stock is depleted. If they are allowed, a zero quantity does not necessarily block a purchase. WooCommerce recommends checking stock management both globally and on the individual product when troubleshooting overselling. See Troubleshooting Orders.
3. Check how a variable product tracks stock
A variable product, such as a shirt with size and color options, can use one shared stock quantity at the parent-product level or separate quantities for its variations. Choose the method that matches the inventory you physically count and fulfill.

WooCommerce notes that the parent product can remain visible when at least one variation is in stock. That visibility does not mean every variation is available: confirm the settings and quantity for the specific option customers select. See Variable Products.
4. Understand what Hold Stock does
Hold Stock (minutes) is for stock reserved for eligible unpaid orders, not a correction for inaccurate product quantities. WooCommerce’s inventory settings describe holding stock for orders in Pending payment; when the configured limit is reached, eligible pending orders are canceled and the reserved stock is released. Checkout reservations can also be released as order status changes or when checkout cannot continue. The exact behavior depends on order status and the installed WooCommerce version. Choose a duration that fits how customers pay and how long scarce stock can reasonably remain reserved. WooCommerce’s troubleshooting guidance recommends 60 minutes, but that is not a universal guarantee or the right setting for every payment flow.

In WooCommerce → Settings → Products → Inventory, you can choose whether out-of-stock products are hidden from the catalog and how stock quantities appear to customers. These options affect what shoppers see; they do not replace stock tracking or the product’s backorder rule. A product may remain listed while being unavailable, or be hidden from catalog browsing, depending on your display settings.

6. If WooCommerce still accepts an order
Check the relevant product and order before changing unrelated settings:
- Confirm global stock management is enabled.
- Confirm stock management is enabled on the product, or on the relevant variation when stock is tracked separately.
- Check that the entered quantity matches available inventory.
- Confirm Allow backorders is set to Do not allow where zero stock must block orders.
- For a variable product, check the exact variation selected and whether the parent or the variation owns the stock quantity.
- If the concern is stock reserved by an unpaid order, check the order’s status and the Hold Stock duration.
If these settings are correct and the problem continues, the cause may depend on the individual store—for example, a plugin conflict, an external stock feed, or custom code. The WooCommerce documentation does not identify any of those as the cause in a particular store; diagnosing them requires checking that site’s setup.
