You can discourage casual copying on a WordPress site by using a content-protection plugin to disable text selection, copy shortcuts, or the right-click menu. These controls are deterrents, not a way to make published text impossible to access or copy. Apply them only where needed and check that visitors can still use forms, dialogs, and other interactive content.

What content-protection controls can do

Plugins in the WordPress Plugin Directory describe CSS and JavaScript controls that make common copying actions less convenient. Depending on the plugin and its settings, these may block selecting text, intercept copy-related keyboard shortcuts, disable the context menu, or prevent images from being dragged. For example, see Sandya Copy Protection and WP Content Copy Protection & No Right Click.

These measures do not secure the underlying content. A visitor may still access it in other ways or capture it in a screenshot; the Disable Right Click & Content Copy Protection listing also notes that a website cannot block operating-system screen capture. Treat protection as friction against casual copying, not a guarantee or substitute for controlling access to sensitive material.

Choose a plugin by its scope and exceptions

Before installing a plugin, review its current WordPress Plugin Directory listing and check what it lets you protect. Useful distinctions include whether controls can be limited to particular pages or posts, which copying actions are affected, and whether selected content can be exempted.

  • Scope: Prefer settings that let you target the content where copying is a concern instead of disabling selection across the whole site.
  • Controls: Check whether the plugin blocks selection, keyboard shortcuts, the context menu, image dragging, or some combination.
  • Exceptions: Look for ways to keep selection enabled on specific pages or elements visitors need to interact with.
  • Compatibility information: Review the listing’s current compatibility details and update history. Directory descriptions are not independent compatibility tests, so verify the result on your own site.

Options described in the directory include WP Content Copy Protection & No Right Click, Sandya Copy Protection, Simple Content Copy Protection & No Right Click, and Disable Right Click & Content Copy Protection. Their listings describe features and options; they do not establish a best plugin or a ranked performance comparison.

Install and check the protection

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for the plugin you want, then review its directory listing, scope controls, exceptions, and compatibility information before installing and activating it.
  3. Open the plugin’s settings and enable only the controls you need. If possible, limit them to the relevant pages, posts, or elements.
  4. Visit protected pages as a visitor and check text selection, copy shortcuts, the context menu, and image dragging according to the settings you enabled.
  5. Test interactive areas, including form fields, inputs, buttons, dialogs, review controls, and code snippets. If a visitor needs to select or copy something there, add an exception or reduce the protection scope.

Interactive-element handling is worth checking rather than assuming: the Simple Content Copy Protection & No Right Click listing records a fix intended to avoid interfering with form fields and dialog or review controls. That listing history is not a guarantee that every plugin, theme, or site configuration will behave the same way.

When to use a different approach

If content must be private, do not rely on blocking selection or right-click. Use access controls that restrict who can view it; once content is delivered to a visitor’s browser, a copying deterrent cannot guarantee that the visitor cannot retain it. If your goal is to protect authorship, consider measures that identify or document ownership rather than promising copy prevention.

Site-specific CSS or JavaScript can also affect selection behavior, but it has the same fundamental limitation as plugin controls and can create usability problems if applied too broadly. A plugin’s scope and exception settings may be easier to manage, but either approach should be checked on the pages where it is used.
