Use a layered moderation plan: block spam terms and links, hold potentially inappropriate messages for review, enable slow mode, and restrict chat to subscribers or members if a surge continues. Keep trusted moderators assigned to watch the queue and act on repeat offenders. YouTube applies chat moderation to Super Chats too, but its automated detection is imperfect, so filters need human oversight and a clear escalation plan.
Set up moderation before the stream
Configure the controls in YouTube Studio before chat gets busy. The exact navigation can vary by account role and interface; use the current Studio live-chat settings and YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance to locate them.
Block recurring spam words and links
Add phrases, promotional wording, and link patterns you have actually seen in spam to the blocked-words and link controls. Revisit the list when tactics change. Avoid broad terms that could catch ordinary conversation, and check that legitimate recurring chat language is not being unnecessarily filtered. YouTube describes blocking links as part of its moderation guidance; matching settings can prevent those messages from appearing as ordinary chat.
Hold potentially inappropriate messages
Enable review for messages YouTube identifies as potentially inappropriate, choosing Basic or Strict according to how much content you want held for review. Held messages remain hidden unless a moderator chooses to show them; leaving a suspect message untouched keeps it hidden. Detection can misclassify messages or miss spam, so treat the queue as an aid rather than a guarantee. YouTube cautions: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat on your live stream.”

Set slow mode and participation limits
Choose a slow-mode interval that fits the expected pace of chat. It limits how often a user can post, but YouTube’s guidance says the channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt. Slow mode can be combined with subscribers-only chat. Subscribers-only chat can also set a subscription-age threshold; subscriber status is visible to others in chat. Members-only chat is another option, but members-only and subscribers-only modes cannot be active at the same time. These restrictions reduce access for new viewers, so decide in advance when and for how long you would use them.
Assign moderators and define their roles
Schedule reliable people to watch chat and the held-message queue during the hours the channel is live. Standard moderators can remove messages, time out or hide users, and review held items. Managing moderators have additional controls, including participant mode, slow mode, blocked words, and turning live chat on or off. YouTube says managing moderators cannot access Live Control Room or Studio, so assign account-level setup work to the channel owner or someone with the necessary access.

Agree on who watches the queue, who can change settings, and when repeated or coordinated abuse should trigger stronger restrictions or chat shutdown. A short channel guideline such as “No spam or self-promotion” can set expectations, but custom guidelines do not automatically hide or remove messages.

- Remove clear spam and address repeat posters. Have a moderator delete obvious spam, time out users who continue, and hide accounts that persistently disrupt the chat.
- Reduce the posting rate. Turn on slow mode or tighten its interval. If that is not enough, switch to subscribers-only or members-only chat, weighing the added friction for legitimate viewers.
- Work through held messages. Show only messages that appear legitimate; leave suspect ones hidden. Automated review is not conclusive.
- Turn chat off if the team cannot regain control. A managing moderator can turn off live chat. The channel owner can also use Studio or Live Control Room. Resume chat when moderators can supervise it again.
- Capture what happened. Record the spam wording and links, then update blocked terms after the incident. Keep the terms specific enough to avoid suppressing normal discussion.

Moderate Super Chats with care
Super Chats and Super Stickers are moderated like other live-chat messages; payment does not exempt a message from the rules. Deleting a Super Chat after the stream does not refund the buyer. YouTube says that if a Super Chat is removed for violating its policies, YouTube’s portion of the revenue is donated to charity. YouTube’s current help guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says creators receive 70% of confirmed Supers revenue, calculated after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees. That is a platform-reported share, not an independent estimate.

Review the stream afterward
Look back at chat and moderation actions for recurring phrases, links, or timing patterns. Use those observations to refine blocked terms and staffing. YouTube says live-chat replay is available on stream archives by default, though the channel owner can disable it. Do not assume a removed paid message was refunded.
