To prevent metal-roofing screws from stripping or pulling out, use fasteners approved for the specific roof panel and its supporting material, drive them straight with controlled torque or depth, and stop when the sealing washer is evenly compressed. If a screw hole is already stripped, replace the screw with an approved oversized fastener; surface sealant alone does not restore the fastener’s holding power.
Why metal-roofing screws strip or pull out
Several different failures can look like a loose screw. The screw may have backed out of its support, its threads may have stripped in thin steel, the panel may have pulled over the fastener, or the washer or panel may be damaged. Identify what has failed before choosing a repair.
- Overdriving: Excessive force can strip the threads in the supporting material, crush or damage the sealing washer, and distort the panel. The Rigid Building Systems Hi-Tech Roof System Installation Guide warns that overdriving can strip threads or damage the washer.
- Underdriving: A screw that is not seated enough may leave the washer uncompressed, compromising the seal and potentially the fastener’s holding force.
- Misalignment: A screw driven at an angle may not seat the washer evenly and can damage the hole or panel.
- Wrong fastener or substrate match: Screw point, thread form and pitch, length, and the material and thickness of the support affect pull-out performance. The New Zealand Metal Roofing Manufacturers’ Code of Practice discusses these factors and notes that thread strip-out can limit performance in light-gauge steel. Its requirements are specific to New Zealand; follow the applicable local rules and roof-system instructions elsewhere.
These causes are why a screw that merely looks loose should not automatically be replaced with a longer or larger screw chosen by guesswork.
Choose the right fastener and driving setup
Start with the roof manufacturer’s installation instructions. Confirm the panel system and what the screw will enter—for example, timber purlin, steel purlin, or roof deck—then use the specified fastener type, grade, spacing, and installation method. The Metal Construction Association’s Metal Roofing Installation Manual and system-specific guidance explain why fastener selection and installation must suit the application.

- Check the screw’s point, thread design, length, diameter, and corrosion suitability against the roof-system requirements.
- Use the specified sealing washer and confirm it is compatible with the fastener and panel system.
- Use a roofing screw gun with suitable torque or depth control, or a clutch-equipped drill if the system instructions allow it. Set or test the control for the screw, hole, and substrate combination; there is no universal torque setting established for all roofs.
- Match the driver bit or socket to the screw head. A suitable bit helps the driver engage the head correctly; it does not itself control torque.
Drive each screw without damaging the seal
- Hold the driver square to the roof surface and start the screw without letting its tip wander.
- Drive with the recommended torque or depth control. Do not keep driving after the washer has seated.
- Inspect the washer and surrounding panel. The washer should be compressed evenly enough to seal, without being split, rolled out, or crushed. Check the roof manufacturer’s own seating criteria: trade guidance describes sealing material slightly visible at the washer edge as properly seated, none visible as potentially under-compressed, and material extruding beyond the edge as overdriven.
- Stop and investigate if the screw spins without tightening, the head sits at an angle, the washer is damaged, or the panel deforms. Continuing to drive a failing screw can worsen the hole or panel damage.
Repair a stripped screw hole
- Remove the loose or stripped screw. Do not leave it spinning in the hole or assume that tightening harder will restore its grip.
- Check the hole, support, washer, and panel. Determine whether the threads or substrate are damaged, whether only the washer has failed, and whether the panel has been distorted.
- Install the specified replacement. For a stripped fastener, use an approved oversized replacement screw with a suitable sealing washer, as directed by the roof-system manufacturer. The appropriate diameter and length depend on the original hole, substrate, and panel system; there is no universal size jump.
- Use the like-size remedy only when appropriate. If the washer is damaged but the hole and threads remain sound, the Metal Construction Association manual describes replacing it with a like-size screw.
- Escalate damage that a screw cannot correct. If the hole is enlarged, the substrate is damaged, several fasteners are failing, or the panel is distorted, consult the roof manufacturer or a qualified roofing professional. A distorted panel may retain a gap or moisture-trapping pocket even if the screw is loosened or replaced.
Do not rely on a bead of surface sealant alone to repair a stripped hole. The Metal Construction Association manual explains that a stripped fastener lacks the material and holding pressure needed to secure and seal the area; sealant does not restore that mechanical function.

Compare candidate fasteners against the complete roof-system requirements, not just the screw’s apparent size. Confirm roof-system approval, substrate compatibility, point and thread design, length and diameter, washer and seal compatibility, corrosion suitability, and required pull-out performance. For tools, verify that torque or depth control is compatible with the fastener and installation method. Manufacturer instructions govern where general trade advice differs.
