Preventing a Windows rootkit starts with keeping Windows and your applications up to date, avoiding suspicious links and downloads, enabling the startup protections supported by your PC, and maintaining backups you can restore. No single setting or antivirus scan guarantees protection. If you suspect an infection, treat the computer’s own reports cautiously: rootkits can interfere with normal operating-system processes and hide malicious activity.
How do I prevent rootkits on Windows?
Microsoft puts the priority plainly: “Like any other type of malware, the best way to avoid rootkits is to prevent it from being installed in the first place.”
- Install updates promptly. Keep Windows and installed applications current so known security weaknesses are less likely to remain available to attackers.
- Be cautious with links, websites, email attachments, and downloads. Avoid opening unexpected attachments or installing software from sources you do not trust.
- Keep recoverable backups. Microsoft recommends the 3-2-1 approach: keep three copies of important data, use two types of storage, and keep at least one copy offsite. A backup is a recovery measure, not a rootkit detector.
- Use the protections built into your device. Check Secure Boot status in Windows Security and consult your PC maker’s instructions before changing firmware settings.
Microsoft’s guidance does not quantify the likelihood that an individual consumer will encounter a rootkit, so a precise risk estimate is not established here.
Why rootkits make detection difficult
A rootkit is malware designed to hide activity by interfering with normal operating-system processes. As a result, a compromised Windows installation may not accurately report what is running. A scan or status display inside Windows can still be useful, but it cannot make the compromised system’s own reports fully trustworthy.

Rootkits can target different layers. Firmware rootkits target device firmware; bootkits tamper with the bootloader; kernel rootkits target the operating-system kernel; and driver rootkits masquerade as drivers. These categories help explain why protections that verify startup components matter, but no one feature covers every possible route to compromise.
How Secure Boot and Trusted Boot help
On supported and appropriately configured PCs, Secure Boot checks trusted signatures along the UEFI-to-Windows boot path. Trusted Boot continues integrity checks as Windows starts, including checks involving the kernel and startup components. Microsoft also describes Early Launch Anti-Malware (ELAM), which checks boot drivers early, and Measured Boot, which records measurements of the boot process for later assessment.

These protections address different steps in startup; they are not interchangeable with routine software updates, cautious browsing, or backups. Availability and behavior depend on UEFI firmware, hardware, and configuration, so not every PC exposes or uses the features identically.
How do I check if Secure Boot is enabled?
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Device security.
- Look for the Secure Boot status shown for your device.
If you need to change a firmware setting, follow the instructions from your PC’s manufacturer. Some hardware or operating-system configurations may require Secure Boot to be disabled; do not change it without checking device-specific guidance.

How do I run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan?
Microsoft Defender Offline runs after the PC restarts and scans outside the normal Windows kernel. That makes it harder for persistent malware to hide from or interfere with the scan, but it does not guarantee that every infection will be found or removed.
- Save open files and other work; the scan restarts the PC.
- In Windows Security, open the Microsoft Defender Offline scan option and start the scan. Follow the prompts to restart.
- If BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key available or suspend protection as directed before restarting.
- After Windows starts again, review the scan result and any action taken.
Microsoft’s documentation lists platform limits: the cited Defender Offline guidance does not apply to ARM versions of Windows 10 or Windows 11, or to Windows Server SKUs. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows version and device before relying on the feature.

What should I do if I still suspect a rootkit?
Do not assume that a clean scan proves the installation is trustworthy. If the device is managed by an employer or school, or the incident may involve sensitive data, contact the organization’s IT or security team rather than trying multiple unverified cleanup utilities.
If a rootkit cannot be removed, Microsoft advises reinstalling Windows and security software, then restoring data from backup. Use a backup you trust and avoid restoring suspicious programs or files that could reintroduce the problem.
