To prevent a read-after-write request from returning an outdated row, send that freshness-critical read to the primary, or wait until the selected replica has applied the write before reading from it. Asynchronous replication can leave a replica behind after the primary has committed a change; simply tuning the replica does not guarantee that every read will be current.
Why a replica can return an outdated row
In a primary/replica setup, writes commonly go to the primary while replicas receive and apply those changes later. MySQL replication is asynchronous by default, and PostgreSQL documents that asynchronous propagation can leave load-balanced servers returning slightly stale results. A successful commit on the primary therefore does not, by itself, prove that a replica can already return the new value. PostgreSQL 18 high-availability documentation and the MySQL 8.0 replication manual describe these behaviors.
The practical question is not whether a replica is generally “caught up,” but whether the particular replica has applied the particular change a request depends on. That distinction matters in flows such as updating an account profile and immediately displaying it, changing access rights before authorizing an action, confirming an order, or checking inventory after a purchase.
Choose the freshness guarantee before routing reads
Separate reads by what they need. A user-facing read immediately following a write may need read-after-write freshness; browsing or analytics may tolerate a short delay. Keeping all traffic on the primary is simple but gives up some benefit of distributing reads. Keeping all reads on replicas scales differently but can expose stale values. A mixed policy is often the useful design: route only freshness-critical reads according to their guarantee, and allow stale-tolerant work to use replicas.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Primary read: Use the primary for an immediate freshness-critical read. This is the simplest rule when the application needs the committed value without waiting for a replica.
- Replica read after a proven wait: If the application can identify the write’s replication position or otherwise establish that a replica applied that write, wait for that condition before routing the dependent read there. This is an application design pattern, not one universal vendor-prescribed algorithm; the mechanism depends on the database and topology.
- Replica read without a freshness requirement: Keep suitable browsing, reporting, and analytics reads on replicas when a possible delay is acceptable. MySQL documents read distribution and analytics isolation among replication use cases, subject to configuration.
Make the policy explicit in the application rather than relying on a generic load balancer to choose any replica for every request. A load balancer can distribute traffic, but distribution alone does not establish that the chosen server has applied a preceding write.
Compare the main ways to avoid stale reads
| Approach | Freshness behavior | Latency and scope | Failure and operational considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read from primary | Reads the primary’s committed state. | No replica-apply wait; routes the relevant read to the primary. | Depends on primary availability and capacity. The application must keep freshness-critical reads from being redirected to a lagging replica. |
| Wait for replica apply, then read | Can provide read-after-write behavior when the wait proves the selected replica applied the relevant write. | Adds wait time to affected reads; can be scoped to relevant requests. | Requires a reliable progress signal and timeout/fallback behavior. Exact application mechanism is topology- and database-specific. |
| Synchronous replication or stronger consistency setting | Can strengthen commit or read ordering, depending on the database mechanism and configured guarantee. | May add latency to writes or reads; some MySQL Group Replication consistency choices can be scoped to a session or set globally. | Guarantees and behavior differ by feature. Stronger guarantees can reduce performance, and deployment or failover behavior must be checked for the specific mode. |
| Semisynchronous MySQL replication | Confirms at least one replica acknowledged receipt and logging of events; this is not proof the transaction has been applied and is readable on that replica. | Adds acknowledgement behavior to replication; not a substitute for an apply wait when the read must see the write. | Do not treat receipt-and-logging acknowledgement as a read-freshness guarantee. See the MySQL replication manual. |
Use database-specific consistency mechanisms carefully
PostgreSQL: distinguish commit acknowledgment from replica apply
PostgreSQL’s asynchronous replication permits time between a primary commit and propagation to other servers. The PostgreSQL 18 documentation says synchronous solutions can wait for servers to commit, at a performance cost; it gives a fully synchronous solution over a slow network that might cut performance by more than half as an illustrative example, not a general benchmark. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on the required guarantee and network conditions. PostgreSQL: High Availability, Load Balancing, and Replication.

In PostgreSQL standby progress reporting, the last WAL locations written, flushed, and applied are distinct. The applied position is the relevant one for checking whether changes have been replayed, though the reported apply position can lag slightly behind the true position. Do not treat a received or written WAL position as equivalent to an applied change. PostgreSQL streaming replication monitoring.
recovery_min_apply_delay is an intentional delayed-recovery setting, not a fix for stale reads; its default is zero, and delay can cause WAL to accumulate. PostgreSQL also documents that synchronous replication with synchronous_commit=remote_apply waits for application on the standby for each commit. These settings address different objectives, so verify the configured behavior against the deployed PostgreSQL version and topology before relying on them. PostgreSQL replication configuration.

MySQL Group Replication: use consistency modes for their stated scope
MySQL Group Replication provides consistency settings with different waiting behavior. BEFORE makes a transaction wait for preceding transactions to complete before it executes, including a read-only transaction. AFTER makes a read/write transaction wait until its changes have been applied on other members. BEFORE_AND_AFTER combines those guarantees. The setting can be scoped to a session or globally; applying stronger consistency only to sessions that need it can avoid imposing its cost on every request. MySQL warns that stronger levels can negatively affect performance, especially when enabled globally. MySQL Group Replication consistency guarantees.
These Group Replication guarantees should not be generalized to ordinary asynchronous MySQL replicas. For failover, Group Replication’s BEFORE_ON_PRIMARY_FAILOVER can hold incoming transactions while the new primary applies its backlog, preventing stale reads from being exposed during that interval. That is a specific Group Replication behavior, not a default property of standard asynchronous replication. MySQL Group Replication consistency guarantees.

Measure whether delay is in transfer or apply
Replication lag can build at more than one stage: changes may be slow to reach a replica, or they may arrive but take time to apply. Track the signals your database exposes and interpret them according to the topology. In PostgreSQL, compare WAL receive/write/flush progress with apply progress rather than relying on a single “lag” number; progress reporting itself can be slightly behind. PostgreSQL streaming replication monitoring.
For Cloud SQL for MySQL specifically, Google recommends distinguishing network_lag from total replica_lag; the difference can indicate slow apply. Its troubleshooting guidance also calls out replica CPU and memory capacity, long-running or large transactions, large updates or deletes, long-running replica queries that block apply, history-list growth, primary keys, and parallel replication. Those service-specific indicators and recommendations should be checked against the Cloud SQL versions and features in use. Google Cloud SQL for MySQL replication lag guidance.

Work through the likely bottleneck
- Network or transfer delay: Check network conditions and compare the receive side with the apply side, where those metrics are available.
- Replica saturation: Check CPU and memory pressure; a replica without enough capacity may not apply changes as quickly as they arrive.
- Transaction shape: Investigate long transactions and large updates or deletes, which can leave a substantial amount of work to replicate or apply.
- Replica query contention: On Cloud SQL for MySQL, long-running replica queries can block apply. Review reporting or other queries that compete with replication work.
- Schema and apply configuration: For Cloud SQL for MySQL, verify primary-key coverage and review whether the available parallel replication configuration fits the workload.
Reducing lag can make replica reads fresher on average, but it is not the same as guaranteeing that a specific write has been applied before a specific read. Retain routing or consistency controls wherever the application requires that guarantee.
Plan for latency, outages, and failover
Stronger consistency is a trade-off, not a free switch. PostgreSQL describes synchronous commit behavior as exchanging performance for guarantees, and MySQL warns that stronger Group Replication consistency may hurt performance. Measure the impact under the deployment’s actual network, workload, and request patterns rather than treating one documented example as a forecast for another system.
Define what a request should do if its chosen replica is unavailable or does not reach the needed apply position within its wait budget. A primary fallback favors freshness if the primary is available; waiting longer favors the replica route at the cost of response time; returning a potentially stale value is appropriate only if the product flow allows it. Failover rules also matter: a newly promoted server may have work to apply, and the specific Group Replication failover protection described above does not automatically apply to other replication configurations.
