To keep a 24/7 sequence predictable in OBS, add the episode files to a VLC Video source, turn Shuffle Playlist off, and turn Loop Playlist on if you want the full list to restart after its last episode. Looping repeats the sequence; it does not stop episodes from appearing again on later cycles. For fewer surprises, remove duplicate entries and check the transition from the final episode back to the first.
Set up an ordered, repeating playlist in OBS
For multiple local video files, use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS’s Media Source is for a single file; its Loop option repeats that file after playback ends. The VLC Video source is the playlist-capable choice and requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s documentation dates to January 11, 2022, so confirm the labels and controls in the version you have installed.
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose VLC Video Source. Add the episode files to its playlist. Exact dialog labels can vary by OBS version.
- Set the order. Arrange the files in the intended episode sequence and leave Shuffle Playlist off. Shuffle randomizes the list, so it is unsuitable when viewers should see episodes in a deliberate order.
- Choose whether the list repeats. Enable Loop Playlist for continuous cycling. OBS describes this option as whether the source should restart after it has run out of media files. With looping off, playback stops when the last file ends.
- Review the configured list. Confirm the source contains the intended files, in the intended order, with no accidental duplicate entries. Preview playback and check the last-to-first transition before going live.
OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default, but check both controls yourself rather than relying on defaults.
What looping can—and cannot—prevent
A playlist loop restarts the list at the beginning after its final item. It does not prevent repeats across cycles: if a list has five episodes and loops, those episodes will play again in the same sequence. To avoid a repeated episode within a cycle, make sure it appears only once in the configured list. If no episode should recur during a particular broadcast window, looping alone cannot meet that requirement; the list or schedule must account for the window.

Check YouTube’s kids’ audience and live-stream rules
Set the audience accurately
YouTube requires creators to identify whether videos are made for kids, including live streams, and says not to rely on automated systems to make that decision. Set the audience accurately in YouTube Studio and include it in the pre-stream checklist. YouTube’s guidance on made-for-kids content and live streams is at its audience-setting help page.

Plan around feature restrictions
Made-for-kids content has restrictions that include live chat, comments, notification features, personalized ads, and saving to playlists. YouTube also says a made-for-kids video or channel cannot be added to a playlist from a homepage, although content can still be added from search results. Do not make the stream’s operation or viewer experience depend on features that may be unavailable. See YouTube’s made-for-kids feature guidance and audience-setting help.

Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance covers encoder, webcam, mobile, and console methods; it does not require one particular method for this OBS playlist workflow. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days to enable livestreaming. Check the current Help page and your channel’s status before planning a broadcast, since platform requirements can change.
Do not treat looping as a monetization shortcut
On July 10, 2025, a TeamYouTube response said YouTube clarified its repetitious-content monetization guidance to cover mass-produced or repetitive content, renamed the policy “inauthentic content,” and applies it regardless of how content was made. A livestream that repeatedly plays episodes is not automatically eligible for monetization simply because it is live; channel and content eligibility remain subject to YouTube review. See the TeamYouTube response.

Troubleshoot repeated or out-of-order episodes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Episodes play in a different order each time | Shuffle Playlist is enabled. | Turn shuffle off in the VLC Video source and verify the displayed order. |
| The same episode appears twice before the playlist ends | The file is listed more than once, or an unintended duplicate is in the configured list. | Audit every playlist entry and remove duplicates; do not assume looping caused an in-cycle duplicate. |
| The first episode starts again after the final one | Loop Playlist is enabled. | This is expected for a continuous cycle. Disable looping if playback should stop at the end. |
| The playlist source is missing in OBS | VLC may not be installed, which OBS requires for this source. | Install VLC, then check the Sources add menu again. |
| A viewer cannot find the stream through a playlist or use an expected feature | Made-for-kids restrictions may affect playlist saving and other YouTube features. | Review YouTube’s current made-for-kids feature rules and avoid relying on restricted features. |
