To find out why a Playwright Python text field clears when it loses focus, fill it with a semantic locator, verify its value immediately, move focus to another control, and verify it again. Playwright’s locator.fill() focuses the field, sets its value, and triggers an input event; it cannot guarantee that the page’s own blur, change, validation, or state-update logic will keep that value. If the field is correct before blur but empty afterward, investigate the application behavior triggered by losing focus rather than adding an arbitrary wait.
Run a before-and-after-blur check
Use a label or role that identifies the intended field and another focusable control to trigger blur. The example assumes an accessible field labelled “Name” and a focusable button labelled “Save”; change those locators to match the page under test.

They can be placed in the corresponding synchronous or asynchronous test. The target of focus() must be focusable; if the page has no suitable Save button, focus another appropriate control or use a locator for an existing focusable element.
Choose a locator that points to the right field
An ambiguous selector can make a test fill one input and inspect another. Prefer a user-facing locator that describes the control, such as get_by_label() or get_by_role() with its accessible name. For example:

field = page.get_by_role("textbox", name="Email address")Use the locator that accurately reflects the page’s accessible interface. If the page has repeated labels or controls with the same name, narrow the locator to the relevant form or section before filling it. Playwright resolves locators against the current DOM as actions run, so keeping the locator tied to the intended user-facing control is also helpful when the page rerenders.

For targets accepted by fill(), including an <input>, <textarea>, or [contenteditable] element, read the field’s current value with an assertion rather than assuming the action succeeded:

Trace where the value changes
- Locate the field precisely. Use its accessible label or role and name. Confirm that the locator points to the field that appears to clear, not a similarly named input elsewhere.
- Fill and check immediately. Call
fill(), then assert the expected value. A failure at this point is different from a value that disappears later on blur. - Move focus and check again. Focus another control and assert the field value once more. This establishes whether the observed reset follows the focus change.
- Inspect application behavior if only the post-blur check fails. Look at the field’s blur and change handlers, validation logic, and any controlled-input state that is passed back into the field. Check whether a rerender replaces the field or restores an older value.
- Use keyboard-by-keyboard entry only when the page needs it. If the application has special per-character keyboard handling, compare the result with
press_sequentially(). Do not treat it as a general fix for a page that resets its own state.
The final investigation steps are diagnostic possibilities, not a universal explanation. A blur-only reset points toward behavior that runs after focus changes, but the exact cause depends on the page implementation. Without the relevant component code and a reproduction, the symptom alone cannot identify a particular handler or framework issue.
When to use press_sequentially()
Playwright’s guidance is to use fill() for ordinary text input. press_sequentially(text) enters characters one at a time and emits keyboard events. Consider it when the page specifically depends on keyboard events for each character—for example, when reproducing a keyboard interaction is part of what the test is checking.

Make the test wait for a condition, not a guessed delay
A fixed sleep can make a test slower without correcting the reset. If the value changes because the application writes an empty value or restores stale state, waiting longer does not repair that logic. Prefer a value assertion after the action that matters. Playwright locator actions and assertions are designed to wait and retry as needed, which is more useful than guessing how many milliseconds a page needs.
Keep the assertion immediately after the focus change when the question is whether blur caused the loss. If the application intentionally updates the field asynchronously, assert the actual expected end state with Playwright’s retrying assertion, rather than adding a sleep and then reading once. Choose the expected value based on the page’s intended behavior: if blur is supposed to preserve the text, assert that text; if validation is supposed to reject or transform it, assert the documented result instead.
Troubleshoot by the failing assertion
The value is wrong immediately after fill()
- Likely area to check: the locator may identify the wrong control, or the page may not have accepted the value.
- What to do: use a label or role-and-name locator for the intended field, then check its value immediately after filling.
- Do not assume: that a later focus change caused a failure that is already present before blur.
The value is correct before focus changes but empty afterward
- Likely area to check: application behavior triggered by blur or change, validation that writes an empty value, controlled state being passed back into the input, or a rerender that restores an older value.
- What to do: inspect the application logic that runs when focus leaves the field and trace the state used to render it.
- Do not assume: that
fill()guarantees persistence after the page handles blur.
The result differs when using press_sequentially()
- Likely area to check: the page may rely on keyboard events for individual characters.
- What to do: use sequential entry only if those keyboard events are part of the interaction being tested, and still assert the value after focus leaves.
- Do not assume: that typing character by character fixes application state that clears on blur.
The test passes only after adding a sleep
- Likely area to check: the test may be synchronizing on elapsed time rather than the result it needs to verify.
- What to do: assert the expected value after the action, using a retrying value assertion for the relevant state.
- Do not assume: that a longer delay can correct an empty value written by the application.
Use a screenshot as a visual aid, not as the value check
A screenshot can help show the visible state of a form at a particular point, but it does not replace asserting the field’s value. For this bug, the key checks are the value immediately after fill() and again after focus moves. If you also need a visual record of the page, keep that separate from the DOM-level assertion.

What to fix in the test and what to fix in the page
If the test does not address the intended field, improve its locator. If it needs to reproduce a page’s special keyboard interaction, use sequential typing where appropriate. If it fills the right field and the value is present until blur but then disappears, the test has exposed a page behavior; the appropriate fix depends on the application’s intended state and its blur, validation, and rerender logic. Keep the post-blur assertion so the test continues to verify the outcome that matters.
