To prevent OBS audio clipping during a YouTube Live music loop, lower the music at its earliest controllable point, keep peaks below 0 dBFS, and put an OBS Limiter last in the music source’s filter chain. Then record and listen to a representative test before going live. A higher YouTube audio bitrate will not fix a signal that is already clipping.
Find where the audio is clipping
Follow the music signal from playback to OBS rather than turning down a later control and assuming the distortion is gone. If you play the videos in a browser or media player, first lower that application’s volume and check the operating-system mixer. If OBS captures system-wide desktop audio, check the desktop output and the corresponding OBS source. If the loop comes from an OBS Media Source or another source with its own volume control, adjust that source.
Listen to the music before it reaches OBS, then monitor it in OBS and make a short local recording. Lowering an OBS fader cannot undo distortion already created by an overloaded application, system output, capture path, or audio file; it may only make the distorted signal quieter. OBS recommends checking levels at the device or application and again as OBS receives them (OBS Audio Mixer Guide).

Check the loudest part of the loop
Play the loudest passage—not just a quiet intro—and watch the music source’s peak meter. OBS’s mixer guide says background music should stay in the green area. The peak-hold indicator retains the loudest meter reading for 20 seconds, which helps catch brief peaks you might otherwise miss (OBS Audio Mixer Guide, accessed 2026).

Digital audio must remain below 0 dBFS in the final stream or recording to avoid clipping. OBS’s technical guide gives -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level, with the latter allowing margin for meter and alignment uncertainty (OBS Audio Mixer Technical Details, 2022). Treat those as OBS meter and headroom guidance—not as a required integrated loudness target for every song. Aim for comfortable headroom; if the meter reaches red or the ceiling, lower the source.
OBS notes that its input-level indicators sit after source filters but before the volume fader. Therefore, a meter reading reflects where it is placed in the signal chain; also listen to the recording to check the actual result.

Lower the earliest control that is too high
- Reduce the browser, player, or application volume if that is where the music plays.
- Check the operating-system mixer and output level if OBS is capturing desktop audio.
- Lower the Media Source or other music source volume if that source provides its own control.
- Use the OBS mixer fader to make a further adjustment if needed, then listen and inspect the peak meter again.
Do not raise OBS gain to compensate for a signal that is already distorted upstream. First identify which meter corresponds to the music and keep the playback route simple enough to trace.
Add a limiter for peak protection
In OBS, open the music source’s Filters and add Limiter. Put it after the source’s other audio filters so it is last in the chain. OBS documents a default limiter threshold of -6.00 dB (OBS Limiter Filter, 2022). That is a documented default, not a mandatory setting for every setup.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
A limiter acts as a ceiling for peaks that reach it. It cannot repair distortion already baked into a video or introduced earlier in the playback chain. If it is working constantly, lower the input level rather than asking the limiter to do all the work. Listen for pumping or other unwanted changes after applying it.
Use a compressor only when it solves a problem
A compressor reduces louder portions of a signal and can help even out dynamic changes. OBS describes it as typically placed near the beginning of a filter chain. Its sidechain or ducking function can use a microphone source to lower desktop audio while someone speaks (OBS Compressor Filter).

For unattended music looping, compression is not required just to prevent clipping. If you do use it, keep the limiter last: output gain later in the chain can raise peaks again, while a final limiter provides the peak ceiling.
Record a representative test before going live
- Use the same playback source, OBS routing, filters, and settings planned for the broadcast.
- Record the loop while it plays through a loud passage, a transition between videos, and the restart point.
- Listen to the recording, not just the meter. Check for distortion, abrupt level changes, and pumping.
- Adjust the earliest level that is too high and repeat the test if needed.
- During the live broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as OBS’s audio meter.
OBS recommends testing and listening to a recording before the first stream. YouTube likewise advises tests with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, and recommends monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube live encoder settings, guidance accessed 2026).

Why changing YouTube’s audio bitrate will not stop clipping
Bitrate controls how the encoder represents audio; it does not lower the music’s input peaks. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, recommends 128 Kbps for stereo in advanced settings, and recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo. Those encoding settings do not fix a signal that is overloading before or inside the audio chain.
Common clipping problems and fixes
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The music sounds distorted even after lowering the OBS fader. | Distortion may have occurred earlier in the player, operating-system output, capture path, or source file. | Listen before OBS and lower the earliest controllable level. Replace or repair a source file that is already distorted. |
| The meter looks safe, but the recording sounds wrong. | A meter alone may not reveal an upstream fault or an issue heard only in the recorded result. | Listen to a local test recording and check the playback path as well as the OBS meter. |
| The limiter does not prevent audible distortion. | The signal may already be clipped before it reaches the limiter. | Lower the upstream application or source level; do not treat the limiter as a repair tool. |
| The music level surges or sounds squeezed. | A compressor or limiter may be working too hard, or later gain may be undoing the level reduction. | Reduce the input level, review filter order, and keep the limiter last. |
| The meter seems to miss a brief peak. | You may be watching a quiet passage or not noticing the held peak indicator. | Test the loudest section and use OBS’s 20-second peak hold as a check. |
Keep music rights separate from audio levels
Clean audio does not establish permission to broadcast a music video. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream to avoid problems such as copyright strikes (YouTube for Artists resources). Do not assume that a video being publicly playable or suitable for looping grants live-stream rights.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded music videos running on YouTube without leaving OBS and a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option; it does not change the audio setup or rights requirements described above. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud.
- Nothing has to stay on at home for the stream to continue.
- Uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
