A disabled button helps, but it cannot guarantee exactly-once processing after a timeout, reload, or second-tab submission.
Stop repeated submissions in the browser
Model the screenshot action as idle → pending → succeeded or failed. When a user submits, acquire an in-flight guard before the first await, show that work is underway, and disable or replace the control that starts the same operation. The synchronous guard matters: two submit events can arrive before a framework has rendered an updated disabled state.
Use the form’s submit event as the common interception point. It handles a submit button click, implicit keyboard submission, and requestSubmit(). A button-only click handler misses other form submission paths. If another control or route can initiate the same screenshot operation, have it consult the same guard.
Vanilla JavaScript example
This example assumes a form with an element whose ID is screenshot-form, a submit button, and a status element. Replace the endpoint and response handling with your application’s API contract.

<form id="screenshot-form">
<label>Page URL
<input name="url" type="url" required>
</label>
<button type="submit">Take screenshot</button>
<p id="status" role="status" aria-live="polite"></p>
</form>
<script>
const form = document.querySelector('#screenshot-form');
const button = form.querySelector('button[type="submit"]');
const status = document.querySelector('#status');
let inFlight = false;
form.addEventListener('submit', async (event) => {
event.preventDefault();
if (inFlight) return;
// Set the lock synchronously, before awaiting or changing the UI.
inFlight = true;
button.disabled = true;
status.textContent = 'Generating screenshot…';
try {
const response = await fetch('/api/screenshots', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ url: form.elements.url.value })
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Screenshot request failed (${response.status})`);
}
const result = await response.json();
status.textContent = `Screenshot ready: ${result.id}`;
} catch (error) {
status.textContent = `${error.message}. Check the request before trying again.`;
} finally {
inFlight = false;
button.disabled = false;
}
});
</script>
The finally block unlocks the control whether the operation succeeds or fails. That is appropriate only if the interface’s retry behavior matches the server’s semantics. If the network fails after the server accepted the request, blindly enabling “Try again” can create another job. For costly jobs, show an uncertain state and offer a way to check for the existing operation before resubmitting.
Disabling a button prevents clicks on that button while it is disabled; it is not a global lock, and it does not stop a second tab, script, or client from sending a request. Also note that calling form.submit() directly does not dispatch the submit event. Prefer form.requestSubmit() when programmatically submitting a form that relies on its submit handler, or protect direct submit() use separately.

React form pattern
In React, handle the operation in the user interaction handler, prevent the browser’s default form submission when appropriate, and render pending feedback. A ref can serve as a synchronous guard before React has committed a new render; state supplies the visible pending state.
import { useRef, useState } from 'react';
export function ScreenshotForm() {
const inFlight = useRef(false);
const [pending, setPending] = useState(false);
const [message, setMessage] = useState('');
async function handleSubmit(event) {
event.preventDefault();
if (inFlight.current) return;
inFlight.current = true;
setPending(true);
setMessage('Generating screenshot…');
try {
const formData = new FormData(event.currentTarget);
const response = await fetch('/api/screenshots', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ url: formData.get('url') })
});
if (!response.ok) throw new Error(`Request failed (${response.status})`);
const result = await response.json();
setMessage(`Screenshot ready: ${result.id}`);
} catch (error) {
setMessage(`${error.message}. Check whether a job was created before retrying.`);
} finally {
inFlight.current = false;
setPending(false);
}
}
return (
<form onSubmit={handleSubmit}>
<label>Page URL <input name="url" type="url" required /></label>
<button type="submit" disabled={pending}>
{pending ? 'Generating…' : 'Take screenshot'}
</button>
<p role="status" aria-live="polite">{message}</p>
</form>
);
}
React also has async form-action and pending-state patterns; whichever approach you use, keep a state-changing request tied to the interaction that caused it. Initiating a POST from an Effect is a poor fit because an Effect can run again on remount.

Choose what happens after success, failure, or uncertainty
“Failure” is not always the same as “the server did nothing.” A validation response may establish that no job was created, while a lost connection or client timeout can leave the outcome unknown. The interface should distinguish a confirmed rejection from an ambiguous network result.
- Pending: explain that the request is underway and prevent the same page instance from starting it again.
- Confirmed success: show the screenshot or job identifier, and avoid presenting the original submit action as though nothing happened.
- Confirmed failure: explain the cause when known and allow a retry if the operation is safe to repeat.
- Unknown outcome: avoid a blind retry for an operation that may create another costly job; check job status or provide a stable retry identity.
Debouncing can reduce a rapid burst of events, but it is not a substitute for an in-flight lock: a later click after the debounce window can still arrive while the first request is running. Nor does either UI technique provide cross-tab or server-side correctness.

Use server-side deduplication when duplicate work matters
Browser controls suppress repeated intent in one page instance. To prevent duplicate effects across retries, reloads, multiple tabs, or concurrent clients, the server needs a rule for identifying the same logical operation. For a screenshot job, that might be a stable operation identity supplied by the client or a domain-specific uniqueness rule.
Design that rule so concurrent arrivals are handled atomically: if the same operation arrives twice, return or reference the existing job rather than creating another one. Define the identity’s scope and lifetime, including how long a retry should map to the original result and whether changed screenshot parameters count as a new operation. These are application design choices; there is no universal deduplication behavior for every POST endpoint.

HTTP idempotency is about intended effect, not whether a request was transmitted only once. RFC 9110 section 9.2.2 describes an idempotent method as one where multiple identical requests have the same intended effect as a single request, and identifies safe methods, PUT, and DELETE as idempotent: RFC 9110, section 9.2.2. Do not assume a screenshot-creating POST is deduplicated just because a client retries it. A client should not automatically retry a non-idempotent request unless it can establish that repeating it is safe or that the first attempt was never applied.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand cancellation in routers and fetches
Frameworks can manage pending requests, but cancellation is not proof that backend work stopped. React Router’s concurrency model allows a later navigation or form submission to interrupt an earlier one; calls to a fetcher can cancel its pending request. The server may already have received the request and started creating the screenshot job. If duplicate work matters, pair client request management with server-side deduplication and a way to inspect operation status.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than build and maintain a browser capture stack, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. Here is the cURL form using the documented endpoint; put your key in place of YOUR_API_KEY and change the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Troubleshoot duplicate screenshot requests
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Two requests appear after a double-click | The lock is set after an await, or only the button’s click event is guarded. | Set a shared in-flight flag synchronously at the start of the submit handler; handle the form’s submit event. |
| Keyboard submission bypasses the protection | The guard is attached only to a mouse click handler. | Move the guard to the form submit handler so implicit submission and requestSubmit() use it too. |
| The UI says canceled, but two jobs exist | Client/router cancellation stopped waiting or aborted transport after the server began processing. | Use a server operation identity and check the existing job before starting another. |
| Retry after a timeout creates a second job | The first request may have succeeded even though its response was lost. | Represent the outcome as unknown and query operation status or repeat with the same deduplication identity. |
| Programmatic submission skips the handler | Code calls form.submit(), which does not fire the submit event. |
Use requestSubmit() or separately guard the direct submission path. |
| Disabled button does not prevent a second operation | Another control, tab, page, or client can initiate the request. | Share the UI lock across controls and enforce operation deduplication on the server when needed. |
