A one-line mv can claim a queue item, but it cannot guarantee exactly-once processing. To prevent duplicate work after a restart, use a same-filesystem rename as a claim step, make the work safe to retry, and define how the worker recovers items left in a processing state. The title’s “4x” is not a verified duplicate-run statistic.
Why mv alone cannot prevent duplicate work
launchd starts and manages processes; it is not a transactional queue engine. Its triggers and lifecycle settings determine when a job runs, not whether an arbitrary task has already completed. A job can be invoked again after a restart or recovery, so the worker must tolerate repeated starts. Apple’s documentation describes these launch and process-management behaviors, not exactly-once completion guarantees (Creating Launch Daemons and Agents; launchd.plist(5)).
On the same filesystem, a rename provides a useful atomic pathname transition: Apple documents that the new name remains present even if the system crashes during the operation. But that guarantee applies to the name change, not the work performed after it. If a worker charges a card, sends a message, or updates a remote service and crashes before recording completion, a retry can repeat that effect. Use an idempotency key or downstream deduplication where possible; otherwise keep durable state and reconcile the ambiguous case. (Apple rename(2) documentation.)
There is an important distinction between a rename and every operation called mv. The macOS mv(1) manual says it falls back to copying and removing when a rename cannot operate across filesystems. That path is not one atomic transition. Keep the incoming, processing, and completed directories on the same filesystem if the protocol relies on rename behavior, and test on the actual filesystem and macOS release. (macOS mv(1) manual.)

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use a queue protocol with explicit states
Give each item a stable unique ID and represent its lifecycle with distinct locations or durable records. A practical directory-backed design uses ready/, processing/, and completed/, with a separate failure or quarantine location if appropriate.
- Publish only complete items. Have the producer write to a temporary filename on the same filesystem as the queue, flush and close it, then rename it to a unique ready filename. A separate ready marker is another option. This prevents the worker from treating a partially written file as complete.
- Claim one item before processing it. Move it from
ready/to a unique destination inprocessing/, retaining its item ID. Proceed only if the claim succeeds. A failed move means the item or queue state changed; do not assume ownership. - Make the effect retry-safe. Pass the stable item ID as an idempotency key to the downstream system when it supports one. If no such facility exists, record durable completion and reconcile cases where the external effect may have happened but the local completion record did not.
- Record the outcome. After success, move the item to
completed/or record completion durably. On failure, preserve attempt and error details and distinguish retryable work from work that should be quarantined or reviewed. - Recover stale processing entries deliberately. At startup, apply a documented rule to items left in
processing/: retry them, quarantine them, or reconcile them against the effect system. Do not blindly move every stale item back to one shared filename.
Use unique names and explicit collision handling. Ordinary mv may overwrite an existing destination, so a fixed destination can silently destroy or replace state. Rename-based transitions should stay on the same filesystem; do not assume the documented local-filesystem behavior applies to network filesystems or every storage layer.

Choose launchd triggers for the worker’s behavior
QueueDirectories, StartInterval, and KeepAlive address different conditions. None removes the need for idempotent processing.
| Setting | What prompts a launch or restart | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
QueueDirectories |
Queue-directory state or filesystem activity. | Useful for directory-backed queues, but the worker should drain available work and tolerate repeated invocation. Filesystem event monitoring can miss changes or launch before a file is consistent; publish completed items atomically as described above. |
StartInterval |
A periodic timer. | Can provide a reconciliation fallback. The manual notes that intervals may be coalesced around sleep and a firing can be missed while a job is already running, so treat it as a prompt to check for work rather than a precise schedule. |
KeepAlive |
Process-lifecycle conditions specified in the job configuration. | Has restart semantics. Do not enable it casually for a worker designed to drain the queue and exit successfully; select it only if keeping or restarting the process matches the intended lifecycle. |
Choose triggers based on the latency and recovery behavior you need, then make repeated launches harmless. Avoid having a shell script daemonize itself or fork into the background: Apple’s archived launchd guidance says launchd should manage the daemon process directly (Creating Launch Daemons and Agents).

What the “one line” can and cannot do
A same-filesystem move from a ready path to a unique processing path can serve as a claim transition. It helps competing workers avoid taking the same pathname, provided they treat a failed claim as a loss of ownership and handle collisions safely. It does not, by itself, prevent repeat external effects, establish that a producer finished writing, or decide what to do with an item stranded by a crash. Those guarantees belong to the queue protocol and the effect boundary, not to launchd or one shell command.
