To prevent the same cartoon episode from playing twice in a 24/7 YouTube stream, use a scheduler that keeps a persistent record of episodes played in the current cycle. Build each next queue from episodes not yet played, restore the record after a restart, and decide explicitly what happens when the full library has aired. YouTube’s playlist loop repeats playlist contents; it is not a no-repeat episode tracker.

Why looping a YouTube playlist is not enough

YouTube documents a loop control for videos and playlists. Looping repeats the playlist; it does not document reading cartoon files from local folders or remembering which episodes have already aired. A no-repeat rule therefore belongs in the system that selects and queues episodes, not in the YouTube loop control. YouTube’s loop instructions explain the playback control.

Build a durable episode inventory

Give each episode a stable identity

Start with an inventory of the folder tree. For each file, retain its path, normalized title, episode identity, and—if useful—a content hash. A normalized filename can be a practical first identifier, but filenames alone can be inconsistent or duplicated. A hash can help identify identical files with different names, but it will not identify alternate encodes of the same episode because the file contents differ.

Decide and document how to treat specials, multipart episodes, renamed files, duplicate copies, and alternate encodes. When two files represent the same episode, assign them the same episode identity if the goal is to avoid airing that episode twice in one cycle. Resolve uncertain cases manually rather than letting a filename or hash make the editorial decision for you.

Keep the played history across restarts

Maintain a durable “played in current cycle” record outside the playback loop. Decide whether an episode counts as played when it starts or only when it finishes. Recording at start avoids a restart replaying an episode that was already underway, but may count an episode that barely aired; recording at finish avoids that issue, but a restart during playback may replay it. Choose the rule that best matches your broadcast promise and implement it consistently.

Persist both the played record and the current queue position. If the process restarts and loses that state, previously aired episodes may become eligible again. That persistence is a scheduler design requirement, not a YouTube playlist feature.

Set up the no-repeat queue

  1. Inventory the folders. Record every file path and assign a stable episode identity. Flag ambiguous or suspected duplicate entries for review.
  2. Choose the cycle rule. Define when a cycle begins and whether the played record is cleared only after all eligible episodes have aired.
  3. Build the eligible set. Before each selection, exclude episode identities already recorded as played in the current cycle.
  4. Choose and record the next episode. Select only from the eligible set. Update the persistent history at the start or finish of playback, according to your chosen rule.
  5. Handle an empty eligible set explicitly. Stop and alert an operator, or deliberately reset the cycle. Do not silently reshuffle the entire library if you are promising no repeats before a reset.
  6. Test recovery with a small library. Confirm that the queue advances, that a restart restores the history and position, and that the chosen end-of-cycle behavior works before relying on the setup for continuous broadcast.

These steps describe workflow logic, not a specific verified player or scheduler. Choose an implementation only after confirming that it can preserve the required history and queue state across restarts.

Choose a scheduling approach that matches your promise

Approach Can an episode repeat before a cycle reset? State after restart Best fit Main caution
Shuffle the full library Yes; random selection can pick an episode again. Depends on the implementation; not established by shuffle itself. Variety matters more than a strict no-repeat promise. Shuffle is not a no-repeat rule.
Play in a fixed sequence Not until the sequence wraps, if the position is retained. Depends on whether playback position is persisted. A predictable order is acceptable. A restart that loses position can replay episodes.
No-repeat queue with persistent history No, until the scheduler explicitly resets the cycle, if identity and history are handled correctly. Designed to survive a restart when history and position are durably stored. You need a clear no-repeat period and controlled cycle reset. Alternate copies and inconsistent metadata need deliberate identity rules; an empty queue needs an explicit response.

Keep the stream, content, and playlist compliant

Meet YouTube’s livestream requirements

YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. Live content must also comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance. The encoder connection and the episode scheduler are separate: monitor both, because a correct queue does not establish that the stream itself is live.

Do not treat no-repeat scheduling as a monetization guarantee

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and say repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. Monetized content should provide distinct creative, educational, or other value, and eligibility depends on the content and channel review. Rotating episodes without duplicates in a cycle does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Confirm rights before broadcasting cartoons

You need the necessary rights for the episodes and associated music. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the livestream terms and conditions.

Troubleshoot repeat episodes

  • An episode repeats after a restart: The played history or queue position may not be durable. Restore both from persistent storage when the scheduler starts, and verify the saved state with a restart test.
  • Two files for one episode both air: They may have different filenames or hashes. Assign them the same episode identity if they should count as one episode.
  • A different encode repeats an episode: A hash treats changed file contents as different. Map alternate encodes to one shared episode identity.
  • The queue runs out unexpectedly: Review the inventory for identity mistakes or an early cycle reset. Decide whether to stop and alert an operator or reset deliberately when no eligible episodes remain.
  • The stream drops while the queue keeps advancing: The stream connection and scheduler are separate systems. Monitor the encoder and the YouTube stream independently, then check the scheduler’s saved position before resuming so recovery does not create an unintended replay.
  • A live stream is interrupted despite a working queue: Check YouTube’s live copyright guidance and confirm that you have the necessary rights and any applicable Content ID allowlisting.
