Preventing corrosion and fouling in seawater electrolysis requires coordinated controls—not a single coating or cleaning step. At the anode, chloride can compete with oxygen evolution and attack electrode surfaces; at the cathode, the local pH rise during hydrogen evolution can encourage magnesium- and calcium-containing deposits. Durable operation therefore depends on electrode interfaces, electrolyte chemistry, membranes and cell design working together. The available reviews describe mitigation strategies, but do not establish a universal operating recipe.
Why anode corrosion and cathode fouling need different controls
Seawater creates distinct problems at the two electrodes. Anodic chloride chemistry is both a selectivity issue—undesired chlorine-related reactions may compete with oxygen evolution—and a materials-durability issue. Cathodic fouling, by contrast, is associated with local alkalinity: hydrogen evolution raises pH near the electrode, which can promote precipitation of magnesium- and calcium-containing compounds. Deposits may adhere to the cathode, cover active area and hinder continued operation.
These mechanisms are discussed in the 2024 durability review Long-term Durability of Seawater Electrolysis for Hydrogen: From Catalysts to Systems and the 2025 review Direct seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production. Because the failure modes differ, a control that helps at one electrode should not be assumed to solve the other.
How to limit chloride reactions and anode corrosion
Design the anode to address both reaction selectivity and resistance to attack. A bulk substrate described as corrosion-resistant may still have a surface that favors unwanted chloride oxidation; conversely, selective surface chemistry alone does not establish long-term material durability. The 2024 ACS perspective identifies chlorine-based gaseous and aqueous oxidation products, including Cl2 and OCl−, as concerns in seawater electrolysis. See Routes to Avoiding Chlorine Evolution in Seawater Electrolysis: Recent Perspective and Future Directions.

Review literature discusses corrosion-resistant materials, engineered catalyst surfaces and interfaces, selective or protective layers, electrolyte chemistry changes, and cell configurations intended to limit chloride oxidation or transport. Metal oxides and engineered catalyst layers appear among the candidate classes, but the reviews do not identify one universally best material for every salinity, pH, current density or device architecture.
- Evaluate selectivity: determine whether the approach suppresses chloride oxidation while supporting oxygen evolution under the intended operating conditions.
- Evaluate durability separately: assess whether the surface and underlying material resist attack during sustained operation, rather than inferring lifetime from a material label.
- Check the device context: consider how the coating or interface interacts with the electrolyte, membrane and cell configuration.
How to reduce cathode mineral deposition
Hydrogen evolution raises pH locally at the cathode. In seawater, this can promote magnesium- and calcium-containing precipitates that adhere to the surface, cover catalytic sites and impede operation. Strategies described in durability reviews include altering surface adsorption or interfacial behavior and suppressing precipitation or deposit adherence. Membrane and cell design can also affect the conditions that lead to deposition.

- Forms a water resistant barrier on marine engines and other non‑painted and painted metal surfaces
- Easy to use 12 oz. spray can with attachable straw for crevice and small space applications
- Clear film coating quickly dries to the touch and does not gunk up over long-term use
- Engineered for saltwater and freshwater environments
- Can also be used elsewhere on the boat, on motor vehicles, ATV/UTV, motorcycles, bicycles, tools, or other metals you want to provide with long-lasting corrosion protection
Do not assume that an acid wash, chelant, scraper or fixed cleaning interval is appropriate for every system. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal cleaning procedure or schedule; any cleaning method must be validated against the specific electrode, membrane, materials and operating conditions.

Compare system-level mitigation options
Electrolyte, electrodes, membranes and cell architecture interact. Approaches discussed in reviews include highly alkaline operation, additives, ion-selective barriers, membrane configurations, and flow or geometry changes. Their effects and costs depend on the system; none should be treated as an isolated fix.

| Design approach | Potential role | Trade-offs and evidence to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Electrode material, surface or interface engineering | Address anode chloride selectivity and corrosion resistance; alter cathode interactions with deposits. | Candidate material classes are discussed, but no single choice is established as best across operating conditions. Verify sustained performance in the intended feed and device. 2024 durability review; 2025 direct-electrolysis review. |
| Electrolyte pH adjustment or highly alkaline operation | Change the chemical environment relevant to electrode reactions and precipitation. | Can add chemical inputs, process complexity, handling needs, cost and scale-up questions; a pH strategy is not a stand-alone guarantee against either failure mode. ACS perspective; ACS review on cost and scale-up trade-offs. |
| Additives or electrolyte treatment | Modify electrolyte chemistry to influence unwanted reactions or deposition. | Added chemicals and process steps require evaluation for compatibility, operating cost and scale-up. The reviews do not provide a universal additive or dose. ACS perspective; ACS review. |
| Ion-selective barriers, membranes or cell-configuration changes | Manage ion transport and alter the environment at the electrodes. | Assess ion crossover, compatibility, component lifetime, added architectural complexity and performance with realistic seawater. 2024 durability review; 2025 direct-electrolysis review. |
Compare candidate designs using the same operating context: chloride suppression and oxygen-evolution selectivity; anode resistance to corrosion; cathode resistance to Mg/Ca deposition and deposit manageability; membrane compatibility and ion crossover; stability in realistic seawater during sustained operation; and added complexity, chemical use, cost and scalability. Product-level comparisons across all these measures are not established by the review sources.
How to evaluate a prevention strategy in a lab or pilot
- Define the intended feed and operating conditions. Record the seawater conditions and operating parameters relevant to the design, rather than treating results from an unspecified or simplified electrolyte as equivalent to seawater operation.
- Identify the failure mode each intervention targets. State whether it is intended to limit chlorine-related anode reactions, improve anode durability, reduce cathode deposition, or affect more than one mechanism.
- Test the complete configuration. Evaluate the electrolyte, electrode interface, membrane and cell arrangement together, including any added chemicals or treatment steps.
- Track outcomes relevant to both electrodes. Examine product selectivity, material condition, deposits and sustained-operation behavior. A short test or a catalyst result alone does not establish long-term seawater durability.
- Weigh operational burden alongside performance. Include chemical handling, process complexity, component lifetime, cost and scale-up implications in the comparison.
The reviews support these as relevant design and evaluation considerations, not as a standardized qualification protocol. They do not provide an equipment-independent corrosion rate, fouling rate, service life, inhibitor dose, coating specification or cleaning interval.

What pH monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
If pH is an explicit control variable in a laboratory experiment or pilot, measure it at locations and times appropriate to the setup. A laboratory pH meter is a measurement aid, not a prevention treatment: it does not block chloride, stop mineral precipitation or certify safe operation. Instrument range, calibration and chemical compatibility depend on the experiment.

The cited sources are reviews or review records, not an operating standard. They support the broad chloride-related anode concerns, cathodic mineral-deposition mechanism and classes of system-level mitigation described above. They do not establish one best route between direct seawater electrolysis and water treatment before electrolysis, or a universal recipe for long-term operation.

Interpret durability claims in light of the test conditions. Results from simplified electrolytes should not be presented as proof of long-term seawater operation unless the cited study actually used realistic seawater and reports the duration, current density, corrosion or deposit observations, and product selectivity needed to judge that claim.
