Use music you created or have explicit permission to use for both the YouTube live stream and, if you keep it, its archived recording. For licensed third-party music, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before you go live. A license alone may not prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream if your channel is not allowlisted.
Understand the difference between a claim and a live interruption
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, and interrupt or terminate the stream if the content remains. Separately, if you archive the broadcast, the recording may receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes these live checks and the allowlist step.
A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike. Depending on the rights holder’s policy, a claim can monetize, track, or block a video, and the result may vary by country or region. YouTube distinguishes claims from copyright removal requests and strikes. See YouTube’s explanation of copyright claims.
Choose music cleared for the stream and its archive
Confirm the actual permitted uses
Before using a track, check that its terms explicitly cover YouTube live streaming. If you plan to leave the promo loop’s broadcast recording available, confirm that the permission also covers the archived video and any future reuse. A “royalty-free” label, a purchased audio file, a license for ordinary uploads, or permission to play music at an in-person event does not by itself establish these rights.
#1 Best Overall
Check the terms for the specific track and confirm the permitted channel, territory, duration, monetization conditions, attribution requirements, and whether the permission can change or be revoked. Keep the license or written permission, with the track identified, so you can refer to it if a claim arises. These are practical record-keeping steps; YouTube does not prescribe a particular document format.
Do not treat Creator Music as live-stream clearance
YouTube’s Creator Music usage details say that tracks licensed or offered for revenue sharing through Creator Music can be used in long-form videos, not Shorts or live streams. Track terms can vary and change at rights holders’ discretion. The page says Creator Music is available to U.S. YouTube Partner Program creators, with expansion outside the U.S. pending; availability does not change the live-stream restriction.

Review Audio Library terms track by track
YouTube recommends its Audio Library as a trusted source for avoiding unlicensed music. Read the terms for the particular track, including any attribution requirement, and follow them. That recommendation is not a guarantee that a mistaken claim can never happen. YouTube’s Audio Library guidance explains how to find and use its music.
Prepare a licensed track before going live
- Confirm the license covers this use. Check that it grants YouTube live-stream rights and, if applicable, archive/VOD rights, for your channel and territory, and note any monetization, attribution, term, or reuse conditions.
- Contact the rights holder about Content ID. Ask the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before the broadcast. YouTube specifically warns that a live stream can be interrupted even when the creator has licensed the content if the channel is not allowlisted.
- Allow time for the owner’s process. Ask when the allowlisting will take effect and what channel identifier or other details the owner needs. A test stream or upload check may help you catch setup issues, but it cannot guarantee that the live broadcast or archive will remain claim-free.
- Keep proof and track details together. Save the permission, the track name or identifier, the channel covered, and any messages confirming the allowlist request or completion.
- Start the promo loop only after checking both permissions and platform setup. If the stream receives a copyright warning or is interrupted, remove or replace the disputed audio rather than assuming a license document alone will resolve the live interruption.
Check the archive after the broadcast
If you keep the live recording, inspect its copyright status in YouTube Studio after the broadcast ends. Review the claimant and the claimed segment before deciding what to do.

- If the claim is valid: YouTube documents options that may include leaving the claim in place, muting or erasing the claimed audio, trimming the segment, or replacing the song with Audio Library music where available.
- If you believe the claim is mistaken: Dispute only if you are confident you hold all necessary rights. YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes; a dispute should rest on a good-faith rights basis.
See YouTube’s copyright-claim guidance for claim effects and available responses.
Common mistakes that do not prevent claims
- Using only a short excerpt: Shortness is not a safe harbor. YouTube’s August 15, 2019 post about manual Content ID claiming said that even short use without permission could still be claimed or blocked. Its policy change addressed manual claims for monetizing very short or unintentional music, not the vast majority of automated Content ID matches. Read the dated YouTube post.
- Assuming a license automatically clears Content ID: YouTube’s live-stream guidance says to ask the content owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Licensing and allowlisting are separate operational checks.
- Assuming an event or personal-use permission covers YouTube: Permission for a venue, event, or purchased copy does not establish the online live and archived uses you need.
- Assuming no interruption means no later issue: An archived stream can receive a claim after the broadcast. Check Studio if you retain the recording.
- Disputing without a rights basis: A disagreement with the claim alone does not establish permission. Review the license and claimed segment, then dispute only when you are confident your rights cover the use.
