To prevent clipping, find and reduce gain at the first point in your audio chain that overloads, then use OBS’s Limiter filter last in the relevant filter chain as a safety ceiling. Test loud tracks and transitions, watch OBS’s peak meter, and record and listen to a representative run before leaving the stream unattended. A limiter can control later peaks; it cannot repair audio that was already distorted upstream.

What clipping is—and what the OBS meter tells you

In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the full-scale ceiling. OBS says the final signal being recorded or streamed needs to stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. OBS can process signals above 0 dBFS internally using floating-point audio, but that does not make an over-level final output safe for listeners. OBS’s Audio Mixer Technical Details explains the distinction.

In the OBS mixer, the moving bar shows peak level; its peak indicator retains the loudest reading for 20 seconds, which helps reveal brief spikes. The black VU-style indicator reflects short-window loudness-related behavior, not the peak ceiling. OBS’s current mixer guide is dated April 3, 2026: Audio Mixer Guide.

OBS’s 2022 technical page calls -20 dBFS its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS its Permitted Maximum Level. These are OBS meter conventions, not a mandatory music target or a YouTube live loudness requirement. The same page notes that some PPM readings, including OBS’s, may understate peaks by 3 dB; retain that qualification rather than treating every meter reading as uniformly inaccurate.

Find the first overloaded stage

Trace the audio from its origin toward the stream. A limiter at the end of the route will not clean distortion introduced earlier by a clipped file, player, mixer, interface preamp, or other processing.

  1. Check the recording and player. Play the source file and listen for distortion before it reaches OBS. Check the player’s output level and any per-track processing.
  2. Check hardware and device outputs. If the route uses a mixer, interface, or other hardware, monitor its output. If distortion is already audible there, lower the gain at that stage first.
  3. Check operating-system and application levels. Follow the signal through the device and application volume controls. Listen at each available monitoring point rather than assuming a clean file means a clean output.
  4. Check the OBS source and filters. Watch the source meter during loud material. OBS notes that the input indicator sits after source filters but before the volume fader. If you are diagnosing the raw input level, temporarily disable source filters so they do not obscure what is arriving.
  5. Check the final OBS mix. Listen through OBS monitoring and watch the final mix while the loudest content plays. Keep the final output below 0 dBFS.

At each stage, reduce the gain where overload first appears, then continue checking downstream. Turning down a later control may prevent the final output from clipping, but it does not remove distortion already present in the signal.

Set up the OBS Limiter as a final safety ceiling

OBS recommends placing the Limiter last in the source’s filter chain. Its documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and a 60 ms release. Treat these as the software’s starting defaults—not universal settings for every station, genre, or mix. OBS’s instructions are in its Limiter Filter guide.

  1. In OBS, open the filters for the audio source you want to control.
  2. Add the Limiter filter and place it after the other filters in that source’s chain.
  3. Begin with the documented defaults only as a reference point. Play the actual loudest material and assess the sound and limiter action in context.
  4. Check that no later gain filter or stage pushes the signal back above the intended ceiling. A limiter placed before later gain processing cannot protect against that later increase.

Use gain correction and limiting for different jobs: lower gain at the overloaded stage to prevent existing distortion, then use the limiter to catch peaks that remain. A limiter is not integrated loudness normalization, and pushing every source toward one meter color or one fixed threshold can produce an unsuitable result. AES guidance discusses limiting frequent peaks before final encoding as general internet-audio distribution advice, not a YouTube-specific live rule; listening remains important.

Test the complete 24/7 playback route before leaving it unattended

Run the test through the same player, scene, filters, hardware, and routing the broadcast will use. A quiet stretch alone is not enough to reveal short overloads.

  1. Play representative content, including the loudest tracks, dense bass or transient-heavy passages, station IDs, alerts, crossfades, and source changes that actually occur in the stream.
  2. Monitor the earliest available point in the chain and then monitor through OBS. If distortion appears early, reduce gain there before adjusting downstream levels.
  3. Watch the OBS peak meter and its 20-second peak hold after each loud event. Do not judge the setup from the black VU-style indicator alone.
  4. Make a recording in OBS using the normal scene and playback route. Listen through the start, loudest passages, transitions, and source changes before relying on the setup.
  5. Repeat the test after changing source files, player volume, mixer or interface routing, scenes, filters, or encoding settings, because any of these can change the level reaching the stream.

Troubleshoot common clipping symptoms

Symptom Likely point to inspect What to do
Distortion is audible before OBS. The file, player output, device, mixer, or interface. Find the earliest stage where the distortion appears and reduce gain there; verify the sound becomes clean before proceeding.
The source sounds clean outside OBS, but the OBS source meter spikes on loud content. OBS source filters and source level. Temporarily disable filters when checking the raw input level, then adjust the source or filter chain and test again.
The source seems safe, but the final stream mix distorts. The final OBS mix or processing after the limiter. Check the final output during the loud passage, rebalance levels, and ensure the limiter is last in its filter chain with no later gain increase.
The meter looks fine during a quiet section, but a brief event clips. Short peaks, transitions, alerts, or source changes. Exercise those events during setup and inspect the 20-second peak hold immediately afterward.
The limiter is active, but the sound remains distorted. An upstream stage may already be clipping. Work backward through the route and correct the first overloaded point; the limiter cannot restore clean audio that was distorted earlier.
