To reduce burn-in risk on an OLED gaming monitor, limit how long bright, unchanging interface elements remain in one place, enable the panel’s built-in protection features, and let its automatic cleaning routine run as directed. Use the exact monitor’s manual for settings and maintenance: controls, cleaning behavior, and warranty coverage differ by model.

What causes burn-in risk on an OLED gaming monitor?

Manufacturers identify prolonged display of static content as the main controllable risk. ASUS says a static, high-contrast image shown for a prolonged time can cause image persistence or burn-in. LG warns that fixed elements such as taskbars, icons, and game menus can leave temporary marks after extended display. In practice, watch for bright HUDs, fixed desktop bars, and windows that stay in the same place during long sessions.

A faint mark is not by itself proof of permanent damage. LG describes some marks as temporary image retention, while the cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a universal test to distinguish temporary retention from permanent burn-in based on a photo or brief observation. Cleaning may address temporary marks, but there is no guarantee it will reverse permanent panel damage.

Which monitor settings should you enable?

Open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) or companion software and look for the panel-care controls available on that exact model. Names vary; possible labels include OLED Care, Screen Protection, Pixel Shift or Screen Move, Screen Saver, and logo brightness or logo dimming. ASUS describes pixel shift, screen saver, and logo-dimming protections for the product series covered by its support guidance; availability and menu paths are model-specific.

How should you adjust gaming and desktop habits?

  • Use a dynamic screen saver or a power-saving setting that blanks the display when the computer is idle.
  • Turn the monitor off when you will be away for a while instead of leaving a static desktop or paused game visible.
  • When practical, periodically move or hide persistent windows and interface elements, such as a taskbar or game HUD.
  • Avoid leaving the same bright, high-contrast content fixed on screen for extended periods.

These steps reduce time spent displaying the same image; they do not require giving up normal gaming or desktop use.

Should you run pixel cleaning manually?

Usually, let the monitor’s automatic process run and follow the instructions for your model before starting a manual clean. The routine and its trigger differ by manufacturer. ASUS says the cleaning process described in its support FAQ takes approximately six minutes, may activate when the monitor is turned off, and should not be interrupted by unplugging the monitor. That timing and behavior apply to the process covered by ASUS’s guidance, not necessarily other models.

LG says standard monitors run Image Cleaning automatically after more than four hours of use since the previous cleaning when the monitor enters power-saving mode or is turned off. LG advises using the manual Image Cleaning option for marks that remain after turning the monitor off and back on. Follow your own model’s instructions rather than repeatedly running a manual routine without checking them.

What if you still see a line or mark?

  1. Turn the monitor off and back on, then check whether the mark remains.
  2. Consult the exact model’s manual for its cleaning and troubleshooting procedure. For the LG standard-monitor guidance cited above, Image Cleaning is available through OLED Care when a mark persists after a power cycle.
  3. If the mark persists or the manual’s steps do not resolve it, contact the manufacturer’s support channel. Do not assume a cleaning cycle can repair permanent burn-in.

Does the warranty cover OLED burn-in?

Do not assume coverage from the brand name alone. Warranty terms depend on the precise model and region. ASUS, for example, states that its PG27AQDPR has a three-year warranty covering OLED burn-in; its global policy page gives different details for other models. Those examples do not establish coverage for every ASUS monitor, much less other manufacturers. Check the warranty documentation that applies to your exact model and place of purchase.

What to check when comparing OLED gaming monitors

If you are choosing a monitor, compare its actual protection controls, automatic maintenance behavior, and warranty terms rather than relying on a general claim that OLED burn-in is covered or prevented. Verify whether the manufacturer explicitly includes burn-in in the warranty, how long coverage lasts, and which regional terms apply. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a comparative burn-in-resistance ranking for current OLED gaming monitors.
